In this context, users expect a highly reliable communication system that can support real time applications to allow teams to collaborate in an efficient way. They also want the system to work in a spontaneous fashion and with no pre-installed infrastructures. To fit all the requirements, WIDENS takes advantage of the technology of wireless ad hoc networks to establish high data rate communication links on the fly. In this paper we describe the overall architecture of the WIDENS network and highlight the design of its major components.

The SC-MMSE equalizer includes serial intersymbol canceller and multiple input multiple output MMSE filter in its structure. The three different soft input soft output (SISO) decoding algorithms with different code types are evaluated. The soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) with convolution codes, the soft output Chase algorithm with block codes and multidimensional single parity check soft output decoder are implemented in the turbo equalizer simulator. The comparison of equalizer performance with different SISO algorithms shows that substantial complexity and power consumption reduction could be achieved with SISO Chase and multidimensional parity check decoding that could provide system performance quite close to the optimum algorithms. The multidimensional parity check decoder provides a large number degrees of freedom for the system designer that could be exploited efficiently together with reduce...

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2000

A classification of SA receivers and their algorithms is given in order to simplify orientation in a very large amount of structures and algorithms. We discuss system integration of SA receivers taking into consideration expected propagation conditions, user mobility and offered traffic. Several radio network planning and upgrading concepts associated with SA are evaluated. We describe possible radio networks architectures when smart antennas are used at the mobiles, base stations or at both ends. Radio network control functions with SA at the different layers are briefly examined. Existing experimental and commercially available SA and their performance are surveyed.

Research paper thumbnail of Cross Standard System for Future Public Safety and Emergency Communications

Public safety community shows an increased interest in standardized communication and information... more Public safety community shows an increased interest in standardized communication and information system that could support reliable technology transparent multimedia communication during multinational emergency operations. The introduction of public safety communication system that will be able to use all available means of communications, including rapidly deployable networks, to cope with large scale disasters or/and to implement preventive measures is very important today. The article provides a survey of existing public safety communications systems; discusses their evolution, current status of research activities and presents the idea of cross standard communication system (CSS). It provides an overview of the key research problems in CSS development.

User studies were carried out during the Wireless Deployable Network System European project – WIDENS. This paper discusses the information flow and spatial distribution of different European organizations involved in emergency response for various large-scale scenarios. The paper presents the operational view of emergency situation and related communication flows in several countries. Key results revealed that similarities exist in organizational roles, holding specific responsibilities in terms of location and task. Hierarchical arrangements and information flow may also be similar. However, difficulties lie in the efficient transmission of information due to slow information flow. Spatial distribution of personnel varies for scenarios. Future European studies are ...
