The new anthraquinones, 7-methylanthragallol 1,3-dimethyl ether, 7-methyl-anthragaUol 2-methyl et... more The new anthraquinones, 7-methylanthragallol 1,3-dimethyl ether, 7-methyl-anthragaUol 2-methyl ether, 6-methylanthragallol 3-methyl ether, 8-hydroxyanthragallol 2,3-dimethyl ether, 7-formylanthragallol 1,3-dimethyl ether, copareolatin 5,7-dimethyl ether, copareolatin 6,7-dimethyl ether, 6-methoxylucidin to-ethyl ether and 6-hydroxyxanthopurpurin, as well as a novel bianthraquinone, bisinaiquinone [10,2'-bi(9-hydroxy-3-methyl-l,4-anthraquinonyl)] were isolated from the roots of Galium sinaicum. Their structures were established by spectroscopic techniques including 2D-NMR. In addition, eight known anthraquinones were also isolated and fully characterized.

The structures ol these compounds were established by various spectroscopic iechniques. Compounds lll and Vl were isolated for the first time from a Rubiaceous species while for ll and Vlll, this study represents the f irst report in the genus Galium. Marine organisms are potentially prolific sources of highly bioactive secondary metabolites that ... more Marine organisms are potentially prolific sources of highly bioactive secondary metabolites that might represent useful leads in the development of new pharmaceutical agents. Algae can be classified into two main groups; first one is the microalgae, which includes blue green algae, dinoflagellates, bacillariophyta (diatoms). . . etc., and second one is macroalgae (seaweeds) which includes green, brown and red algae. The microalgae phyla have been recognized to provide chemical and pharmacological novelty and diversity. Moreover, microalgae are considered as the actual producers of some highly bioactive compounds found in marine resources. Red algae are considered as the most important source of many biologically active metabolites in comparison to other algal classes. Seaweeds are used for great number of application by man. The principal use of seaweeds as a source of human food and as a source of gums (phycocollides). Phycocolloides like agar agar, alginic acid and carrageenan are primarily constituents of brown and red algal cell walls and are widely used in industry.

Five new nardosinane sesquiterpenoids, armatins A-E, lemnal-1(10)-ene-2,12-dione (a new natural p... more Five new nardosinane sesquiterpenoids, armatins A-E, lemnal-1(10)-ene-2,12-dione (a new natural product), and two new cytotoxic 19-oxygenated ergosterols, armatinols A and B, were isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the soft coral Nephthea armata, collected in Taiwan. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis, and their cytotoxicity was determined against selected cancer cells.

Two cytotoxic ylangene-type sesquiterpenoids, lemnalol (5) and the new compound cervicol (6), as well as two ylangene-type sesquiterpenoids, isolemnalol (7) (a new compound) and 4-oxo-alpha-ylangene (8), were isolated from the methylene chloride solubles of the Formosan soft coral Lemnalia cervicorni. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis, and their cytotoxicity against selected cancer cells was measured in vitro.
