Low vs. high glycemic index carbohydrate gel ingestion during simulated 64-km cycling time trial performance. J. Strength Cond. Res. 18(3):466-472. 2004.-We examined the effect of low and high glycemic index (GI) carbohydrate (CHO) feedings during a simulated 64-km cycling time trial (TT) in nine subjects ([mean Ϯ SEM], age ϭ 30 Ϯ 1 years; weight ϭ 77.0 Ϯ 2.6 kg). Each rider completed three randomized, double blind, counterbalanced, crossover rides, where riders ingested 15 g of low GI (honey; GI ϭ 35) and high GI (dextrose; GI ϭ 100) CHO every 16 km. Our results showed no differences between groups for the time to complete the entire TT (honey ϭ 128 minutes, 42 seconds Ϯ 3.6 minutes; dextrose ϭ 128 minutes, 18 seconds Ϯ 3.8 minutes; placebo ϭ 131 minutes, 18 seconds Ϯ 3.9 minutes). However, an analysis of total time alone may not portray an accurate picture of TT performance under CHO-supplemented conditions. For example, when the CHO data were collapsed, the CHO condition (128 minutes, 30 seconds) proved faster than placebo condition (131 minutes, 18 seconds; p Ͻ 0.02). Furthermore, examining the percent differences and 95% confidence intervals (CI) shows the two CHO conditions to be generally faster, as the majority of the CI lies in the positive range: placebo vs. dextrose (2.36% [95% CI; Ϫ0.69, 4.64]) and honey (1.98% [95% CI; Ϫ0.30, 5.02]). Dextrose vs. honey was 0.39% (95% CI; Ϫ3.39, 4.15). Within treatment analysis also showed that subjects generated more watts (W) over the last 16 km vs. preceding segments for dextrose (p Ͻ 0.002) and honey (p Ͻ 0.0004) treatments. When the final 16-km W was expressed as a percentage of pretest maximal W, the dextrose treatment was greater than placebo (p Ͻ 0.05). A strong trend was noted for the honey condition (p Ͻ 0.06), despite no differences in heart rate (HR) or rate of perceived exertion (RPE). Our results show a trend for improvement in time and wattage over the last 16 km of a 64-km simulated TT regardless of glycemic index.

The impact of ingesting BC30 with other protein sources or in other demographics is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of adding BC30 to a 20-g dose of a blend of rice and pea protein on postprandial changes in blood amino acids concentrations in healthy, older women. Healthy, older females (n = 30, 58.5 ± 5.2 years, 165.4 ± 6.8 cm, 65.6 ± 8.8 kg, 23.7 ± 3.2 kg/m2) completed two separate 14-day supplementation protocols separated by a 3-week washout period. This condition is underpinned by low energy availability, which is a byproduct of high energy expenditure, inadequate energy intake, or a combination of the two. Several contributing factors exist that may predispose an athlete to low energy availability, and therefore a holistic and comprehensive assessment may be required to identify the root causes. The focus of the current narrative review is to discuss the primary contributing factors as well as known risk factors for low energy availability among female athletes to help practitioners increase awareness on the topic and identify future areas of focus.

The purpose of the current study was to examine relationships between sport nutrition knowledge and body composition and examine potential predictors of body weight goals in collegiate athletes. Participants included National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III women (n = 42, height: 169.9 ± 6.9 cm; body mass: 67.1 ± 8.6 kg; fat-free mass: 51.3 ± 6.6 kg; body fat percent: 24.2 ± 5.3%) and men (n = 25, height: 180.8 ± 7.2 cm; body mass: 89.2 ± 20.5 kg; fat-free mass: 75.9 ± 12.2 kg; body fat percent: 13.5 ± 8.9%) athletes. The consumption of diets with increasing caloric intakes after acute hypo-energetic dieting on se... more The consumption of diets with increasing caloric intakes after acute hypo-energetic dieting on serum weight management markers were examined. Sedentary, obese women (n=122) for 7d consumed either their normal diet (CON, n=14), a higher carbohydrate (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 46: 24: 30; n=52) or higher protein (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 24: 46: 30; n=56) hypocaloric (HYPO) diet (1,000 kcal•d-1). Subjects then consumed for 7d either 1,600 (n=27), 2,100 (n=26), 2,600 (n=30), or 3,100 (n=25) kcal•d-1 consisting of (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 55: 15: 30) while CON maintained their normal diet. After 7 and 14d of dieting, participants provided fasting blood samples for determination of body mass, serum insulin, leptin, adiponectin and ghrelin levels. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlations and repeated measures ANOVA using an alpha level of 0.05. Adiponectin levels did not change (p<0.05) and no changes were reported relative to macronutrient intake through the first week of dieting. Significant but equal weight loss occurred in both HYPO groups, while leptin increased and insulin decreased in all groups. Ghrelin and leptin levels increased in all groups after increasing caloric intake. A significant interaction effect was found for leptin, with the 3,100 calories and CON group reporting higher levels of leptin in comparison to all other diet groups. Ghrelin in all groups was greater after dieting in comparison to baseline. Leptin was correlated to changes in body mass (r=0.409; p<0.01) and insulin (r=0.369;p<0.01). Initial HYPO dieting decreased body mass, insulin and leptin levels while adiponectin was unchanged. Increased caloric intake increased leptin levels in conjunction with caloric intake.

However, data are lacking regarding the combinatorial effects of exercise, diet, and calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation on body composition changes in post-menopausal women. Herein, 128 post-menopausal women (51.3 ± 4.5 years, 36.4 ± 5.7 kg/m2, 46.2 ± 4.5% fat) were assigned to diet and supplement groups while participating in a supervised circuit-style resistance-training program (3 d/week) over a 14-week period. Twenty female NCAA Division II lacrosse athletes (mean ± SD: 20.4 ± 1.8 years; 68.8 ± 8.9 kg; 168.4 ± 6.6 cm; 27.9 ± 3% body fat) recorded dietary intake and wore a physical activity monitor over four consecutive days at five different time points (20 days total) during one academic year. Body composition, bone health, and resting metabolic rate were assessed in conjunction with wearing the monitor during off-season, pre-season, and season-play. Body fat percentage decreased slightly during the course of this study (p = 0.037). Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) (p < 0.001) and activity energy expenditure (AEE) (p = 0.001) energy were found to change significantly over the course of the year, with pre-season training resulting in the highest energy expenditures (TDEE: 2789 ± 391 kcal/day; AEE: 1001 ± 267 kcal/day). Twelve moderately trained male cyclists (22.3 ± 2.2 y; 181 ± 6 cm, 74.8 ± 9 kg) participated in the study. Subjects were familiarized and fasted for 8 h after standardizing nutritional intake. In a double blind and crossover manner subjects ingested either a 150 mL placebo or ribose (3 g ribose + 150 μg folate). Subjects rested for 25 min and completed 5 × 30 s anaerobic capacity tests with 3 min passive rest. Six capillary blood samples were taken prior to and after sprints for adenine nucleotide breakdown determination. The experiment was repeated 1 wk later with alternative drink. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. No significant interactions were observed for any performance or blood variables. D-ribose supplementation has no impact on anaerobic exercise capacity and metabolic markers after high-intensity cycling exercise.

Literature examining the efficacy of creatine supplementation in older adults (55-82 yr) suggests creatine to promote muscle strength and hypertrophy to a greater extent than resistance training alone. The following is a review of literature reporting on the effects of creatine supplementation on intramuscular high energy phosphates, skeletal muscle morphology and quality of life in older adults. Results suggest creatine supplementation to be a safe, inexpensive and effective nutritional intervention, particularly when consumed in conjunction with a resistance training regime, for slowing the rate of muscle wasting that is associated with aging. Objective: We examined whether the ingestion of a hydrothermally modified starch (HMS) would alte... more Objective: We examined whether the ingestion of a hydrothermally modified starch (HMS) would alter metabolic and hormonal responses to prolonged cycling compared with maltodextrin (MAL). Methods: Nine male cyclists (30 AE 2 y, 79.2 AE 2.1 kg, 4.7 AE 0.1 L of O 2 /min, 7.5 AE 1.3 y training) fasted 10 h before cycling for 150 min at 70% peak oxygen consumption and completing a cyclingto-exhaustion trial at 100% peak oxygen consumption. Participants ingested 1g/kg of HMS or MAL 30 min before and within 10 min of completing the bout. Blood samples were provided every 15 min before, during, and 90 min after exercise. Expired gases were collected every 30 min during exercise. In a crossover, randomized, and double-blind fashion, identical testing was completed 1 wk later. Results: Primary findings from this study were that 1) increases in serum glucose were greater during MAL (peak 9.5 mM) versus HMS (peak 7.4 mM, P 0.01), 2) insulin levels were significantly lower during HMS (peak 2.5 mIU/mL) versus MAL (peak 20.3 mIU/mL, P < 0.001), and 3) HMS was associated with greater fat breakdown as indicated by the increased serum non-esterified fatty acids (P < 0.01) and glycerol levels (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Ingestion of a low-glycemic HMS before prolonged cycling exercise blunted the initial spike in serum glucose and insulin and increased the breakdown in fat compared with MAL.

This study examined whether supplementing the diet with a commercial supplement containing zinc m... more This study examined whether supplementing the diet with a commercial supplement containing zinc magnesium aspartate (ZMA) during training affects zinc and magnesium status, anabolic and catabolic hormone profiles, and/or training adaptations. Forty-two resistance trained males (27±9 yrs; 178±8 cm, 85±15 kg, 18.6±6% body fat) were matched according to fat free mass and randomly assigned to ingest in a double blind manner either a dextrose placebo (P) or ZMA 30-60 minutes prior to going to sleep during 8-weeks of standardized resistance-training. Subjects completed testing sessions at 0, 4, and 8 weeks that included body composition assessment as determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, 1-RM and muscular endurance tests on the bench and leg press, a Wingate anaerobic power test, and blood analysis to assess anabolic/catabolic status as well as markers of health. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Results indicated that ZMA supplementation non-significantly increased serum zinc levels by 11-17% (p=0.12). However, no significant differences were observed between groups in anabolic or catabolic hormone status, body composition, 1-RM bench press and leg press, upper or lower body muscular endurance, or cycling anaerobic capacity. Results indicate that ZMA supplementation during training does not appear to enhance training adaptations in resistance trained populations.

This condition is underpinned by low energy availability, which is a byproduct of high energy expenditure, inadequate energy intake, or a combination of the two. Several contributing factors exist that may predispose an athlete to low energy availability, and therefore a holistic and comprehensive assessment may be required to identify the root causes. The focus of the current narrative review is to discuss the primary contributing factors as well as known risk factors for low energy availability among female athletes to help practitioners increase awareness on the topic and identify future areas of focus.

Sedentary, obese women (n=122) for 7d consumed either their normal diet (CON, n=14), a higher carbohydrate (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 46: 24: 30; n=52) or higher protein (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 24: 46: 30; n=56) hypocaloric (HYPO) diet (1,000 kcal•d-1). Subjects then consumed for 7d either 1,600 (n=27), 2,100 (n=26), 2,600 (n=30), or 3,100 (n=25) kcal•d-1 consisting of (%CHO: PRO: FAT= 55: 15: 30) while CON maintained their normal diet. After 7 and 14d of dieting, participants provided fasting blood samples for determination of body mass, serum insulin, leptin, adiponectin and ghrelin levels. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlations and repeated measures ANOVA using an alpha level of 0.05. Adiponectin levels did not change (p<0.05) and no changes were reported relative to macronutrient intake through the first week of dieting. Significant but equal weight loss occurred in both HYPO groups, while leptin increased and insulin decreased in all groups. Ghrelin and leptin levels increased in all groups after increasing caloric intake. A significant interaction effect was found for leptin, with the 3,100 calories and CON group reporting higher levels of leptin in comparison to all other diet groups. Ghrelin in all groups was greater after dieting in comparison to baseline. Leptin was correlated to changes in body mass (r=0.409; p<0.01) and insulin (r=0.369;p<0.01). Initial HYPO dieting decreased body mass, insulin and leptin levels while adiponectin was unchanged. Increased caloric intake increased leptin levels in conjunction with caloric intake.

Twenty female NCAA Division II lacrosse athletes (mean ± SD: 20.4 ± 1.8 years; 68.8 ± 8.9 kg; 168.4 ± 6.6 cm; 27.9 ± 3% body fat) recorded dietary intake and wore a physical activity monitor over four consecutive days at five different time points (20 days total) during one academic year. Body composition, bone health, and resting metabolic rate were assessed in conjunction with wearing the monitor during off-season, pre-season, and season-play. Body fat percentage decreased slightly during the course of this study (p = 0.037). Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) (p < 0.001) and activity energy expenditure (AEE) (p = 0.001) energy were found to change significantly over the course of the year, with pre-season training resulting in the highest energy expenditures (TDEE: 2789 ± 391 kcal/day; AEE: 1001 ± 267 kcal/day). Twelve moderately trained male cyclists (22.3 ± 2.2 y; 181 ± 6 cm, 74.8 ± 9 kg) participated in the study. Subjects were familiarized and fasted for 8 h after standardizing nutritional intake. In a double blind and crossover manner subjects ingested either a 150 mL placebo or ribose (3 g ribose + 150 μg folate). Subjects rested for 25 min and completed 5 × 30 s anaerobic capacity tests with 3 min passive rest. Six capillary blood samples were taken prior to and after sprints for adenine nucleotide breakdown determination. The experiment was repeated 1 wk later with alternative drink. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. No significant interactions were observed for any performance or blood variables. D-ribose supplementation has no impact on anaerobic exercise capacity and metabolic markers after high-intensity cycling exercise.

Objective: We examined whether the ingestion of a hydrothermally modified starch (HMS) would alte... more Objective: We examined whether the ingestion of a hydrothermally modified starch (HMS) would alter metabolic and hormonal responses to prolonged cycling compared with maltodextrin (MAL). Methods: Nine male cyclists (30 AE 2 y, 79.2 AE 2.1 kg, 4.7 AE 0.1 L of O 2 /min, 7.5 AE 1.3 y training) fasted 10 h before cycling for 150 min at 70% peak oxygen consumption and completing a cyclingto-exhaustion trial at 100% peak oxygen consumption. Participants ingested 1g/kg of HMS or MAL 30 min before and within 10 min of completing the bout. Blood samples were provided every 15 min before, during, and 90 min after exercise. Expired gases were collected every 30 min during exercise. In a crossover, randomized, and double-blind fashion, identical testing was completed 1 wk later. Results: Primary findings from this study were that 1) increases in serum glucose were greater during MAL (peak 9.5 mM) versus HMS (peak 7.4 mM, P 0.01), 2) insulin levels were significantly lower during HMS (peak 2.5 mIU/mL) versus MAL (peak 20.3 mIU/mL, P < 0.001), and 3) HMS was associated with greater fat breakdown as indicated by the increased serum non-esterified fatty acids (P < 0.01) and glycerol levels (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Ingestion of a low-glycemic HMS before prolonged cycling exercise blunted the initial spike in serum glucose and insulin and increased the breakdown in fat compared with MAL.

Forty-two resistance trained males (27±9 yrs; 178±8 cm, 85±15 kg, 18.6±6% body fat) were matched according to fat free mass and randomly assigned to ingest in a double blind manner either a dextrose placebo (P) or ZMA 30-60 minutes prior to going to sleep during 8-weeks of standardized resistance-training. Subjects completed testing sessions at 0, 4, and 8 weeks that included body composition assessment as determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, 1-RM and muscular endurance tests on the bench and leg press, a Wingate anaerobic power test, and blood analysis to assess anabolic/catabolic status as well as markers of health. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Results indicated that ZMA supplementation non-significantly increased serum zinc levels by 11-17% (p=0.12). However, no significant differences were observed between groups in anabolic or catabolic hormone status, body composition, 1-RM bench press and leg press, upper or lower body muscular endurance, or cycling anaerobic capacity. Results indicate that ZMA supplementation during training does not appear to enhance training adaptations in resistance trained populations.
