Simultaneously supply chain scholars have highlighted the lack of focus on social facets at the micro behavioral level, as well as the limited endeavors to build upon existing theories for new perspectives. Taking an exploratory approach to addressing literature gaps, the objectives of this research involve integrating constructs from social capital theory and the knowledge-based view of the firm to examine associations and interactions among network ties, social interactions, knowledge absorptive capacity, and knowledge acquisition in the development of new product innovations by US apparel and sewn products manufacturers (N=125). This study involved practice-based research with cultural textile weaving groups in Guatemala and... more This study involved practice-based research with cultural textile weaving groups in Guatemala and Peru. Artisan textiles were co-designed with contemporary color palettes and layouts for backstrap weaving and patterns for hand embroidery. Sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) provided a framework to explore implementation of co-design in the production of handcrafted cultural textile products. Fashion trends including color forecasts and product preferences may allow for incremental innovation in the product development process that will result in increased sales and income for artisans (Klewitz & Hansen, 2014). Innovation for sustainability allows relative improvements in process, product, and organizational innovations by creating more sustainable production methods. SOI has been found to be successful in the marketplace in niches or even mass markets (Schaltegger & Wagner, 2011). This project was inspired by dart manipulation in flat pattern drafting for a target market of up... more This project was inspired by dart manipulation in flat pattern drafting for a target market of upper-class professional women from age 30-60. The idea was to make a custom suit with no apparent darts. The mixture of velveteen and wool creates a subtle color blocking and the geometric forms shape around the curves of the body

PurposeThis study highlights the impact of attaining and incorporating knowledge and building rel... more PurposeThis study highlights the impact of attaining and incorporating knowledge and building relationships with other firms in US apparel production.Design/methodology/approachProducers of apparel and sewn products operating within a US state form the sample for this mixed methods exploration. Study 1 involves a qualitative analysis of the producers highlighting knowledge in interorganizational discussions. Study 2 quantitatively measures responses from 38 producing firms. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression was used to measure associations, and simple slopes were computed to examine interactions.FindingsThe knowledge exchanged, according to participants in study 1, was limited, thus warranting further examination. Results from study 2 revealed strong associations among knowledge absorptive capacity, social interaction and people-oriented culture with network ties. Small-sized apparel manufacturing businesses who operate apparel design, development, and product... more Small-sized apparel manufacturing businesses who operate apparel design, development, and production businesses often experience inadequate knowledge in navigating the complex apparel industry. Key concepts in social capital theory suggest that social interactions and people-oriented organizational cultures advance knowledge sharing and network ties. This mixed method exploration of small-sized Colorado-based apparel manufacturers sought to address the research question: Is external knowledge available, and if so, do aspects of social capital play a role in the process? Study 1 involved a qualitative investigation with interviews and business documents suggesting low levels of knowledge sharing, and challenges in learning aspects of the industry. These relationships form the tactics by which knowledge and other strategically important resources are accessed and created. Forming and maintaining ties among members of a network have been the subject of numerous research studies in the social, economic, and business literature. Our work is framed by the resource-based view of the firm perspective along with social capital theory and its shared constructs in network theory. Prior findings suggest that networking ties are strategic actions generated for firm growth and continuance. The ties may be short-term or develop into long-term relationships. The intent of this research is to fill some of the gaps in interorganizational networking strategy by analyzing five antecedents that have been suggested in the liter...
