More than 100 types have been identified and among them, 24 have been found into the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to analyze human papillomavirus prevalence and its subtypes in 50 oral warts, of which 20 were squamous papillomas, 17 condylomaacuminatum and 13 verruca vulgaris. Method: In situ hybridization was used with biotinylated DNA probes for wide-spectrum HPV and with specific probes for human papillomavirus 6/11, human papillomavirus 16/18 and human papillomavirus 31/33. Results: Human papillomavirus was present in ten (20%) of the 50 oral wart cases, 03 (3/20) squamous papillomas, 05 (5/17) condyloma acuminatum and 02 (2/13) verruca vulgaris. Of these, 8 (16%) were positive to the HPV probe 6/11 being 5 condyloma acuminatum, 1 squamous papilloma and 2 verruca vulgaris. Three cases (6%) demonstrated positivity to the human p...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory, multisystem, and autoimmune disease. Objective. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of hyposalivation in SLE patients and evaluate factors associated. Methods. This is a cross-sectional study developed at the Cuiaba University General Hospital (UNIC-HGU), Mato Grosso, Brazil. The study population consisted of female SLE patients treated at this hospital from 06/2010 to 12/2012. Unstimulated salivary flow rates (SFRs) were measured. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed in all cases using a significance level < 0.05. Results. The results showed that 79% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus suffered from hyposalivation and that the disease activity and age in years were the factors that resulted in statistically significant differences. Conclusion. The activity of the disease, age >27 years, and the drugs used were factors associated with hyposalivation, resulting in...

Methods: blood samples from 40 female patients were collected and processed (ABX Pentra 80 automation – flow cytometry). Descriptive statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS 2.0 statistical software. Results: 42.5% of the 40 patients showed lowered concentrations of hemoglobin. The hematocrit and hemoglobin dosage averages of the anemic patients were respectively of 29.7% and 9.9 gdL, while those without anemia showed 41.1% of hematocrit average and hemoglobin average dosage of 13,7gdL. Normocytic and normochromic anemia was the most prevalent, founded in 64.7% of the anemic patients, with normal hematimetric indices. In cases of macrocytic anemia, hematimetric changes, such as increased RDW, policromasy and reticulocytosis observed in some patients suggest hemolytic processes, commonly observed in these patients.

To investigate the profile, clinical features, and the presence of dysplasia and candidiasis in patients with oral lichen planus. A total of 21 patients were selected from 258 patients at risk for oral cancer development. Most of the patients were white (76,2%), female (66,6%), with mean age of 58.8 years. Eight were smokers and seven were alcohol consumers. The buccal mucosa was the most affected site, followed by the tongue and the gingiva. The reticular pattern was the most common appearance. Histopathology depicted dysplasia in nine cases and cytopathology was positive for Candida in eight cases in the first appointment. Our data are similar to the literature. Cytopathology was important for the diagnosis of candidiasis. Although the presence of dysplasia was verified, further studies are necessary to clarify the importance of this finding.
