Precise prediction on properties of passive structures as well as active devices is achieved by using accurate EM simulation techniques developed in this work. Complex 3D EM designs and modelling can be successfully accomplished by using EM simulations. As the foundation of the work, the general recommendations for EM simulations are firstly summarized according to two practical examples: design of a split ring resonator and investigation on multimode propagation in CPW structures. For the case of EM modelling of on-wafer measured passive components for millimeter-wave applications, a novel ground-ring excitation scheme with simple ground-signal-ground (G-S-G) probe models is proposed. The parasitic elements caused by the excitation structure are de-embedded by an extended "L-2L" calibration method. The excitation...

Compared with the conventional wavelength splitter design, the length of the novel structure has been reduced to at least 1/5, showing better performance. The presented structure is also adequate for splitting other wavelengths and more tolerable fabrications.

This model allows using the physical dimensions of the DSRRs as an input avoiding commonly used extraction of equivalent parameters. The model includes the compensation for the different circumference of two rings and allows the prediction of higher order resonance modes of the DSRR. The advantage of the developed model in comparison to the previously developed analytical representation is that it includes the coupling effect between neighboring DSRRs, which allows for an accurate modeling of densely packed multiresonator structures. The model is verified by comparison with measured DSRRs-loaded microstrip line performance. The developed model can be effectively used to save computation resources associated with full wave electromagnetic simulations of the DSRR structures. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This model allows to estimate all resonance modes of DSRR and extract the quality factors of the structure for filter synthesis purpose. According to the filter specifications, the low-pass prototype parameters are used to calculate the required coupling coefficients between coupled DSRRs. The corresponding coupling coefficients are realized by using asymmetric coupled multi-conductors networks. The proposed filter synthesis approach is experimentally verified by comparing measured and simulated data using the developed models. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
