he present work focuses on the study of the death of the Roman soldier before the Hellenistic war elephants, from the information offered by literary sources (and to a lesser extent iconographic), which refer, with different degrees of detail, to the particular way in which death could be found by means of this exceptional weapon of war brought from the Far East. The analysis starts with the war against Pyrrhus II of Epirus, with special interest in the battle of Heraclea, the first experience of the Roman legions in the face of a debacle caused by a detachment of elephants trained for combat, as well as in the vision that the State had of the fallen in combat.

However, the Carthaginian case presents a series of peculiarities, both from a tactical and logistical point of view, that make it necessary to focus an analysis on those aspects that differentiate it from the Hellenistic military model when using such a sensitive weapon as is the elephant.

According to both premises, it is necessary to carry out a review of the previous postulates in order to propose new interpretative premises.

The geopolitical role of these border communities, between the Hellenic and the Punic worlds, in this context has not been analyzed in depth by historiography, beyond specific episodes prior to the Ptolemaic annexation at the end of the century. Therefore, our objective is providing an overview of the events without falling into generalities.

In particular, an intense debate has arisen around the numismatics of the Barcid family as evidence that their policies were an imitation of the Greek kingdoms of the Eastern Mediterranean, among other things because of the inclusion of the elephant in their reverses. For our part, through an iconographic analysis of the elephant in Hellenistic numismatics, we will assess the elements of continuity and rupture in the Barcid case to qualify the prejudices and myths that emerged from historiographic trends. Based on this, we can speak of an adaptation of the Greek ideology of power to the Punic models of the West.
