This study sought to investigate the surface roughness and the S ence of Streptococcus mutans (in... more This study sought to investigate the surface roughness and the S ence of Streptococcus mutans (in the presence and absence of saliva) to ceramics and composites. The early dental biofilms formed in situ on the materials were illustrated, using scanning electron ascopy (SEM). Feldspathic and leucite/feldspathic ceramics and microhybrid and microfilled composites were evaluated. Human dental enamel was used as the control. Standardized specimens of the miaterials were produced and surface roughness was analyzed. The dhesion tests were carried out in 24-well plates and colony forming units (CFU/mL) were evaluated. Values of roughness (microm) ,adherence (CFU/mL) were analyzed statistically. Of all the surfaces tested, enamel was the roughest. Leucite/feldspathic ceramics were rougher than the feldspathic ceramic, while composites were similar statistically. Enamel offered the highest level of adherence to uncoated and saliva-coated specimens, while the leucite/feldspathic ceramic demonstrated greater adherence than the feldspathic ceramic and the composites were similar statically. The rougher restorative materials increased the adherence of S. mutans on the material surfaces.

To determine the effect of maintaining torque after mechanical cycling of abutment screws that ar... more To determine the effect of maintaining torque after mechanical cycling of abutment screws that are coated with diamondlike carbon and coated with diamondlike carbon doped with diamond nanoparticles, with external and internal hex connections. Sixty implants were divided into six groups according to the type of connection (external or internal hex) and the type of abutment screw (uncoated, coated with diamondlike carbon, and coated with diamondlike carbon doped with diamond nanoparticles). The implants were inserted into polyurethane resin and crowns of nickel chrome were cemented on the implants. The crowns had a hole for access to the screw. The initial torque and the torque after mechanical cycling were measured. The torque values maintained (in percentages) were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test, with a significance level of 5%. The largest torque value was maintained in uncoated screws with external hex connections, a finding that was statistically significant (P = .0001). No statistically significant differences were seen between the groups with and without coating in maintaining torque for screws with internal hex connections (P = .5476). After mechanical cycling, the diamondlike carbon with and without diamond doping on the abutment screws showed no improvement in maintaining torque in external and internal hex connections.

The jig designs used for this kind of test show variations in published studies, complicating direct comparison between studies. This study evaluated the effect of different jig designs on metal-ceramic bond strength and assessed the stress distribution at the interface using finite element analysis (FEA). Metal-ceramic (Metal: Ni-Cr, Wiron 99, Bego; Ceramic: Vita Omega 900, Vita) specimens (N = 36) (diameter: 4 mm, veneer thickness: 4 mm; base diameter: 5 mm, thickness: 1 mm) were fabricated and randomly divided into three groups (n = 12 per group) to be tested using one of the following jig designs: (a) chisel (CH) (ISO 11405), (b) steel strip (SS), (c) piston (PI). OBJETIVO: Nosso objetivo é relatar os resultados seriados do Teste de Integração Sensorial no acompanhamento dos pacientes portadores de DMA tratados com dieta fracionada e restrição de glicose. FORMA DE ESTUDO: Retrospectivo, inclui um desenho de descrição de casos. MÉTODO: Foram avaliadas as respostas de 21 pacientes portadores de distúrbios do metabolismo do açúcar e tontura submetidos à dieta fracionada com restrição de glicose. A medição objetiva do equilíbrio corporal dos pacientes foi feita pela Posturografia Dinâmica Computadorizada, utilizando-se o protocolo do Teste de Integração Sensorial. to evaluate the influence of the occlusal resin cement thickness on the cyclic loads-to-failure o... more to evaluate the influence of the occlusal resin cement thickness on the cyclic loads-to-failure of feldspathic crowns and to compare the results to data from monotonic tests. A large range of cement thickness (50μm and 500μm) was tested, in order to better measure the influence of this variable. Feldspathic ceramic crowns (Vita Mark II blocks, Vita Zahnfabrik) were bonded to dentin analog dies (G10 (NEMA grade G10, International Paper), with occlusal resin cement thicknesses of 50μm and 500μm (Multilink Automix, Ivoclar). The dies were prepared with microchannels for water transport to the cement layer. After 96-h water storage, the specimens (n=20) were submitted to cyclic loads (500,000 cycles at 20Hz; initial maximum load=40% of monotonic load, from previous data) following a staircase sensitivity design (step size=25N). Failure loads at 500,000 cycles were compared to monotonic failure loads (from a previous study with specimens produced by the same author, using the same materials, specimen configuration and cementation protocol). Crowns with an occlusal cement layer of 50μm were more resistant than those cemented with 500μm (246.4±22.9N vs. 158.9±22.9N), under wet cyclic testing conditions (p<0.001). The fatigue failure loads were reduced compared to monotonic loads: to 37% of monotonic for 50μm; to 53% of monotonic for 500μm. An occlusal cement thickness of 50μm was more favorable for the structural performance of feldspathic crowns than was 500μm. Cyclic fatigue reduced failure loads well below those found under monotonic loading.

Composite fibrous electrospun membranes based on poly(dl-lactide) (PLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) ... more Composite fibrous electrospun membranes based on poly(dl-lactide) (PLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) were engineered to include borate bioactive glass (BBG) for the potential purposes of guided bone regeneration (GBR). The fibers were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopies, which respectively confirmed the submicron fibrous arrangement of the membranes and the successful incorporation of BBG particles. Selected mechanical properties of the membranes were evaluated using the suture pullout test. The addition of BBG at 10 wt % led to similar stiffness, but more importantly, it led to a significantly stronger (2.37 ± 0.51 N mm) membrane when compared with the commercially available Epiguide® (1.06 ± 0.24 N mm) under hydrated conditions. To evaluate the effects of hard machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching on the biax... more To evaluate the effects of hard machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching on the biaxial flexural strength and roughness of a CAD/CAM leucite glass-ceramic; to investigate if ceramic post-machining surface roughness is influenced by the machining order and by the pair of burs used for it. A hundred forty four discs were machined by six nominally identical pairs of burs and divided into groups (n=24): (1) machining-M, (2) machining and glaze firing-MG, (3) machining and hydrofluoric acid etching-MA, (4) machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching-MGA, (5) machining followed by polishing, as a control-MP, (6) machining, polishing and hydrofluoric acid etching-MPA. The roughness after each treatment (Ra and Rz) was measured. The discs were submitted to a piston-on-three ball flexure test (ISO 6872/2008) and strength data analyzed through Weibull statistics (95% CI). M resulted in lower characteristic strength (σ0) (128.2MPa) than MP (177.2MPa). The glaze firing reduced σ0 (109MPa), without affecting roughness. Hydrofluoric acid etching increased the roughness without affecting σ0. Spearman's coefficient (rs) indicated strong and significant correlation between machining order and roughness (rsRa=-0.66; rsRz=-0.73). The ceramic post-machining surface roughness differed significantly according to the pair of burs employed (p<0.05). hard machining and glaze firing reduced the leucite ceramic strength, while hydrofluoric acid etching did not affect the strength. Variability in the roughness might be expected after machining, since it was influenced by the machining order and by the bur pairing.

In this work, a triple antibiotic paste (TAP)-mimic scaffold is proposed as a drug-delivery strategy to eliminate A. naeslundii dentin biofilm. Metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline were added to a polydioxanone (PDS) polymer solution and spun into fibrous scaffolds. Fiber morphology, mechanical properties, and drug release were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy, microtensile testing, and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. A large range of cement thickness (50μm and 500μm) was tested, in order to better measure the influence of this variable. Feldspathic ceramic crowns (Vita Mark II blocks, Vita Zahnfabrik) were bonded to dentin analog dies (G10 (NEMA grade G10, International Paper), with occlusal resin cement thicknesses of 50μm and 500μm (Multilink Automix, Ivoclar). The dies were prepared with microchannels for water transport to the cement layer. After 96-h water storage, the specimens (n=20) were submitted to cyclic loads (500,000 cycles at 20Hz; initial maximum load=40% of monotonic load, from previous data) following a staircase sensitivity design (step size=25N). Failure loads at 500,000 cycles were compared to monotonic failure loads (from a previous study with specimens produced by the same author, using the same materials, specimen configuration and cementation protocol). Crowns with an occlusal cement layer of 50μm were more resistant than those cemented with 500μm (246.4±22.9N vs. 158.9±22.9N), under wet cyclic testing conditions (p<0.001). The fatigue failure loads were reduced compared to monotonic loads: to 37% of monotonic for 50μm; to 53% of monotonic for 500μm. An occlusal cement thickness of 50μm was more favorable for the structural performance of feldspathic crowns than was 500μm. Cyclic fatigue reduced failure loads well below those found under monotonic loading.

Composite fibrous electrospun membranes based on poly(dl-lactide) (PLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) ... more Composite fibrous electrospun membranes based on poly(dl-lactide) (PLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) were engineered to include borate bioactive glass (BBG) for the potential purposes of guided bone regeneration (GBR). The fibers were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopies, which respectively confirmed the submicron fibrous arrangement of the membranes and the successful incorporation of BBG particles. Selected mechanical properties of the membranes were evaluated using the suture pullout test. The addition of BBG at 10 wt % led to similar stiffness, but more importantly, it led to a significantly stronger (2.37 ± 0.51 N mm) membrane when compared with the commercially available Epiguide® (1.06 ± 0.24 N mm) under hydrated conditions. To evaluate the effects of hard machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching on the biax... more To evaluate the effects of hard machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching on the biaxial flexural strength and roughness of a CAD/CAM leucite glass-ceramic; to investigate if ceramic post-machining surface roughness is influenced by the machining order and by the pair of burs used for it. A hundred forty four discs were machined by six nominally identical pairs of burs and divided into groups (n=24): (1) machining-M, (2) machining and glaze firing-MG, (3) machining and hydrofluoric acid etching-MA, (4) machining, glaze firing and hydrofluoric acid etching-MGA, (5) machining followed by polishing, as a control-MP, (6) machining, polishing and hydrofluoric acid etching-MPA. The roughness after each treatment (Ra and Rz) was measured. The discs were submitted to a piston-on-three ball flexure test (ISO 6872/2008) and strength data analyzed through Weibull statistics (95% CI). M resulted in lower characteristic strength (σ0) (128.2MPa) than MP (177.2MPa). The glaze firing reduced σ0 (109MPa), without affecting roughness. Hydrofluoric acid etching increased the roughness without affecting σ0. Spearman's coefficient (rs) indicated strong and significant correlation between machining order and roughness (rsRa=-0.66; rsRz=-0.73). The ceramic post-machining surface roughness differed significantly according to the pair of burs employed (p<0.05). hard machining and glaze firing reduced the leucite ceramic strength, while hydrofluoric acid etching did not affect the strength. Variability in the roughness might be expected after machining, since it was influenced by the machining order and by the bur pairing.

In this work, a triple antibiotic paste (TAP)-mimic scaffold is proposed as a drug-delivery strategy to eliminate A. naeslundii dentin biofilm. Metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline were added to a polydioxanone (PDS) polymer solution and spun into fibrous scaffolds.
