Discourse is produced and understood on the basis of personal 'semantic' mental models of situations and on socially shared knowledge, attitudes and ideologies, under the control of 'pragmatic' context models that make discourse approprioate in the communication. It is in this way also that discourse is related to social situations of experiences, power relations between groups or institutions. Power relations, such as those of racism, are thus daily reproduced by discourse based on the personal and social mental representations of group members.
