This multiorgan stress is related to depression can be caused by chronic psychological stress due to excessive cortisol levels and can lead to organ damage. This study analyzed LEO in preventing depression and multiorgan failure using intraperitoneal injection of corticosteroids in animal-model. Methods: Rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain, male, aged 7-8 weeks were involved in this study. Depression in animal-model is defined by immobilization using tail suspension test and anhedonia using sucrose preference test. LEO 5% was diluted in virgin coconut oils as vehicle. Serum cortisol was analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Organs were extracted and processed using hematoxylin eosin staining. Results: The results of this study indicate that LEO was able to prevent damage to the g...

The prevalence of GBV-C/ HGV RNA, determined by reverse transcription-PCR for a portion of the NS3 region of the viral genome, was 2.7% (4 of 150) among randomly collected blood donor sera, which were all negative for both hepatitis B virus surface antigen and antibodies against hepatitis C virus (HCV). On the other hand, the prevalence among anti-HCV-positive blood donors was 17.8% (13 of 73), with the ratio being significantly higher than that observed with the anti-HCV-negative blood donors (P < 0.001). A high prevalence of GBV-C/HGV infection was also observed among patients with chronic liver disease, such as chronic hepatitis (5.7%), liver cirrhosis (11.5%), and hepatocellular carcinoma (7.0%), and patients on maintenance hemodialysis (29.0%). No correlation was observed between GBV-C/HGV viremia and serum alanine aminotransferase levels in the populations tested, suggesting the possibility that GBV-C/HGV does not cause apparent liver injury. Phylogenetic analysis of sequences of a portion of the 5 untranslated region and the E1 region of the viral genome identified, in addition to a previously reported then novel group of GBV-C/HGV variants (group 4), another novel group of variants (group 5). This result suggests that GBV-C/HGV can be classified into at least five genetic groups. GBV-C/HGV isolates of group 4 and group 5 were each shown to comprise approximately 40% of the total Indonesian isolates.

Mutation of the TP53 gene in codons R175 and G245 is a reliable genetic diagnostic for prognosis and prediction of therapeutic response. However, the association of these mutations with the histopathological grading of the OSCC is still unknown. This study aimed to see the association between TP53 mutations in codon R175 and G245 with histopathological grading outcomes in OSCC patients. Forty-four FFPE samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin to observe their histopathological grade. The mutation was tested through the PCR-RFLP method using Hha1 and Aci1 enzymes. Data recorded were analyzed using Cramer’s V association. This study showed 43.2% of heterozygous mutations in codon R175 and 4.5% of heterozygous mutations in codon G245. Very strong significant associations were found between the histopathological grading result and the mutatio...

Methods: Their performance at various concentrations were compared via an experimental study with a specific brand of imported commercial agarose used in molecular biology research. The measured variables were separation and migration during electrophoresis of a DNA fragment. Results: The local agar genus Gracilaria gigas, Gelidium, brand "B" and brand "S" could separate DNA fragments at a concentration between 1% and 2%, with an optimum concentration of 2% w/v, as good as a specific brand of imported commercial agarose. Conclusions: Their performance were very close to that of commercial agarose and can still be improved by further agar purification as well as by pH and sulfur control.

The viremia titers (mean ± standard deviation) of HCV subtype 1b (HCV-1b) isolates with low (three or fewer) and high (four or more) numbers of ISDR mutations were 5.4 ± 0.6 and 4.2 ± 0.9 log 10 RNA copies/ml, respectively, with the difference between the two groups being statistically significant ( P < 0.01). Similarly, the viremia titers of HCV-1c isolates with low and high numbers of ISDR mutations were 5.3 ± 0.6 and <3.0 ± 0.0 log 10 RNA copies/ml, respectively, with the difference between the two groups being statistically significant ( P < 0.01). Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique epithelial malignancy triggered by Epstein Barr virus ... more Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique epithelial malignancy triggered by Epstein Barr virus that occurs at a high frequency in certain regions of southeast Asia. Previous studies reported that this tumor was a radiosensitive but the predominant failure after adequate radiotherapy was due to its distant metastasis. It would be of value to detect the presence of metastasis as early as possible. Previous studies have shown that cytokeratin 19 (Ck 19) positive cells indicate the presence of micrometastasis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of Ck 19 mRNA by nested RT-PCR in established NPC patients and its correlation to the various stages of NPC as determined by conventional clinical examination. The reported sensitivity of RT-PCR was around 1/107, i.e one cancer cell can be detected among 107 normal blood cells. Venous blood samples from 30 patients with biopsy-proven nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 10 ENT non NPC patients were tested. After we isolated total mR...

Conclusion: The conclusion PCR technique can detect DNA of Salmonella typhi resi...

A new group of sequence variants was also identified, although its prevalence ratio was not as high in the area surveyed.
