Preventive archeology represents an extremely important topic, which has helped most of the signatory countries of the European Convention on the Protection of Archaeological Heritage to institutionally transform and methodologically develop archaeology faced with the challenges of intensive construction. Although in a certain way, the presentation of this topic in Serbia comes with a delay compared to most of the neighboring countries, its (non)acceptance will decisively affect the further course of the development of archaeology in Serbia.
As part of the XLIV Annual Meeting of the Serbian Archaeological Society, which was held in 2021 in Paraćin, a thematic session of the Section for the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage was organized under the title: Preventive Archaeology and the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage. The goal of the session was to start a broader discussion on the topic of preventive archaeology and protection of archaeological heritage with the idea that colleagues from European countries present their experiences on this issue as a very important source of knowledge for a more accurate overview of the state of archaeological heritage protection in Serbia.
The session had 15 participants from 14 countries: Eitan Klein, Israel; David Barreiro, Spain; Michal Pawleta, Poland; Andreas Mader, Switzerland; Stefano Campana, Italy; Predrag Novaković, Slovenia; А. Aleksić, Serbia; Z. Tankosić, Greece; Michal Bureš, Czech Republic; Novak David, Czech Republic; Antonio Batarda Fernandes, Portugal; Jos Bazelmans, Netherlands, I. Pančić, BiH-RS; D. Gazivoda, Montenegro and Milena Kamenova, Bulgaria.
The session was held live over the Internet, was recorded and is publicly available via a link: shorturl.at/qzPSU.
As a result of the work of the successfully held session, a collection of papers on this topic was created with the same goal and idea - starting a wider discussion on the topic of preventive archaeology and protection of archaeological heritage in order to clearly observe the phenomenon and define specific proposed solutions.
The collection contains 11 papers by a total of 17 authors from 12 countries, in which examples of archaeological heritage protection based on various experiences of preventive archaeology are presented, through the presentation of the general situation (Netherlands, France, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Poland, Croatia), specific approaches on individual sites (lake sites in Switzerland), methodological approaches (importance of remote detection in Italy) or specialized cases of prevention of looting of archaeological treasures (cave sites in Israel).
Considering the topic of preventive archaeology extremely important, especially in the time of great challenges for the protection of archaeological heritage in Serbia, we dedicate the thematic collection to marking 140 years since the foundation of the Serbian Archaeological Society.

This book is the first volume of a comprehensive archaeological and anthropological study of the human skeletal remains from this site. Bringing various strands of mortuary evidence together for the first time the author provides a more complete picture of life and death at Lepenski Vir, including comparisons of the many contexts in which human remains have been found as well as details of biological characteristics of the people who created such distinctive material culture at the site. The site of Lepenski Vir is one of the best documented and analyzed contexts for the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition anywhere. A combination of a detailed study of archaeological data, archaeothanatological analysis, science-based approaches to the skeletal material, and a social bioarchaeology perspective regarding the integration of different strands of data when providing wider interpretations, make this book an unique contribution to the current literature on the many-sided consequences of the change from foraging to farming.
