In numerous industries, shorter product life cycles and increased competition have raised the lev... more In numerous industries, shorter product life cycles and increased competition have raised the level of interest in the management of new product development processes. Many firms are looking for ways to decrease concept to customer development time and, at the same time, improve quality and significantly reduce the cost of the resulting product. One approach many companies are taking is to involve material suppliers earlier in the design process. This involvement may range from simple consultation with suppliers on design ideas to making suppliers fully responsible for the design of components or systems they will supply. This article analyzes the results of a survey of companies who are attempting to integrate suppliers into new product development. We compare the companies" most and least successful supplier integration efforts based on the management practices employed as well as a number of factors related to the new product development project environment.
