Books are prized objects that, since their first appearance, were treasured and protected from th... more Books are prized objects that, since their first appearance, were treasured and protected from the ravages of time, rodents, insects, and especially theft. Inhabitants of New Spain, used books in their efforts to evangelise, in their intellectual endeavours, in administration and in the Law. Libraries were subsequently created and, as time passed, their holdings grew and were increasingly consulted. This led to ex libris and stamps being used so that a book's owner could instantly be identified. Nevertheless books still went missing. It was for this reason that the distinctive brand mark was developed in Mexico, and this slowed losses. The present article provides an overview of a range of ownership marks used in New Spain, especially the ones peculiar to the colony such as numerical ex libris and brand marks.
