This article focuses on the relationship between ecclesiastics and their
use of weapons in the early modern age, by the analysis of cultural and
political elements and contexts, which justified or legitimized this phenomenon at various levels. The analysis will refer both to historiography
and to some sixteenth and seventeenth-century examples relating to the
Spanish Monarchy. Despite the increasing bans of the bishop, synodal
and canonical legislation, especially in the dramatic context of the Thirty
Years War, of ideological and political polarization and of the revolts that
took place in various parts of Europe and America, the clergy – that, at
least in the case of some of its members, had never lost the medieval
custom of the use of weapons – armed himself and fought both against
and in defense of the sovereign, especially when the local community
was at stake. Especially the sieges of the cities were, in many cases, the
real moment of truth to establish the boundaries and limits of political
fidelity, in which the jurisdictional conflicts and social divisions were
attenuated, without however disappearing, if not only in propaganda. In
all these circumstances the involvement of clerics in hand-arm fights was perceived by contemporaries without particular embarrassment, as an expression of their right to direct and tangible participation in personal salvation and the community.
Keywords: Clergy arms bearing, clerical violence, ecclesiastical discipline,
early modern revolts, early modern war.

The aim of this article is to break down the elements of his sanctity, according to the image of counter-reformist archbishop present in great part of the historiography, analyzing the process that created that image. Several specialists have been interested in the mechanisms of a canonization that was carried out relatively fast: the cardinal and archbishop of Milan died in November 3, 1584, and was elevated to the glory of the altars in July 1610. However, it still lacks a picture capable of composing the numerous and scattered tesserae that the hagiography, in the first place, and the historiography, in the second place, have collected. The mosaic created in this study shows the presence of numerous dissonant elements in relationship to the hagiographic tradition and to the historiography, which has most recently dealt with his holiness from a purely censorial and inquisitorial perspective. In this new analysis of the process of his canonization, it is possible to identify.

He was a complex personality: legal studies, the activity as member of important Roman Congregations in the papal court, the frequentation of the Barberini circle and the political and diplomatic experience at the court of Madrid forged a considerable career, before being appointed archbishop of Milan and cardinal. The analysis of his correspondence with Francesco Barberini, cardinal nephew of Pope Urban VIII, shows how Monti, even aft er his entrance in Milan (1635), maintained a high-profi le political and diplomatic role. In the long and diffi
cult years of war that involved the State of Milan he carried out a series of activities ranging from traditional management of relations with the Roman Congregations and the secular authorities (Governor, Senate of Milan etc.) to sending news about the war and political information to Rome. He was archbishop and, at the same time, political envoy, although informal, of the papacy for the State of Milan and the Swiss area, and also medium of papal propaganda. Monti played a role not easily defi ned, according to traditional categories that scholars use in analyzing the careers at the service of the Catholic Church and the Holy See (Archbishop/pastor, curial/offi cial, envoy/nuncio). In all his activities he was able to rely on his diplomatic experience and the wide network of personal and political relations both in Rome and at the court of Madrid.

We are convinced that, only through the pooling of scientific cross-sectional and generational experiences, the study of the past can effectively foster social and cultural progress. That is the reason why the Sangalli Institute intend to dedicate its annual workshop for young researchers, between 2nd and 4th of October 2019, to the following topic "Entangled Knowledges. Education and Culture in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, XIVth-XIXth centuries". The workshop is scientifically coordinated by Massimo Campanini (Ambrosian Academy, Milan-IUSS, Pavia), Massimo Carlo Giannini (University of Teramo), Maurizio Sangalli (University for foreigners of Siena) and Myriam Silvera (University of Roma Tor Vergata), with the collaboration of Marco Ricca (Protestant Cultural Center 'Pietro Martire Vermigli', Florence) and Letizia Tomassone (Waldensian Church, Florence), and it will take place at the Sangalli Institute (Piazza di San Firenze 3, Firenze-Italy). The workshop aims to deepen the contacts and the differences which, between the end of Middle Ages and the beginning of the Contemporary Era, have characterized the transmission of knowledges and culture within the three monotheistic religions. The workshop will focus on the processes of the formal and informal channels of cultural dissemination in the religious perspective, in order to establish comparisons among them.

We are convinced that, only through the pooling of scientific cross-sectional and generational experiences, the study of the past can effectively foster social and cultural progress. That is the reason why the Sangalli Institute, inspired by the re-emerging in our societies of racist, xenophobic and anti-semitic feelings and behaviors, is organizing between 24th and 26th of October 2018 a workshop for young scholars on " Ethnical and Racial Discriminations and Religious Identities: Norms, Practices and Interactions, 1400-1850". The workshop will focus on the building of cultural and religious models that, during the Modern Era, justified the discriminations of groups, communities and individuals on the basis of their ethnical and/or religious identities. Our aim is to particularly analyze the formal or informal elaboration of norms, the concrete practices and the reciprocal interactions among the different levels of that topic.
A few more days to make your applications to the workshop “Ethnical and Racial Discriminations and Religious Identities: Norms, Practices and Interactions, 1400-1850”. The new deadline is set on 30th July 2018

The essays, without any geographical, cultural and thematic boundaries, must concern The Religious History from Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era, also intended in an inter-disciplinary and inter-religious way. The two monographs will appear into the dedicated book series of the Institute and will be published and distributed both in paper and digital edition through the on line catalogue of the Firenze University Press and any other operators related to the editor, in order to spread at most their circulation. The books must have a maximum of about 300 pages (black and white photographs) and they will be provided with an ISBN number, both for the paper and the digital edition. The digital edition will be published open access and fully downloading. The dead line is November 1st, 2017.

- What role have Christian experiences either played in the formation of particular forms of racism or in creating forms of integration or egalitarianism within religious organizations and institutions?
- Have there been practices and provisions that have favored integration in the community of non-native Christians, or has Christian birth – the approval of standards for infant baptism being the indicator– been more significant and even a discriminatory factor among community members? When has ethnic origin hindered certain members of a given church to be fully accepted within a community?
The seminar (June 2021, Bologna) / monograph and the commitment of “Cristianesimo nella storia” to publish articles in this subject area might offer answers to these questions by working through different chronological aspects of the issue (the approach our journal generally takes). The goal would be to bring together the various forms of Christian expression and interpretation in the world with the socio-economic systems where aspects of racism are engendered, and to take into account the normative and political-institutional frameworks that give rise and meaning to manifestations of hostility toward and isolation of stigmatized peoples/groups.
