This is not as much a scholar work, but rather a travel guide to enjoy the roman mosaics, history, and gastronomy of lower Beaujolais.
The small town of Asa Paulina (Today's Anse) 30 km south of Lugdunum (todays' Lyon) Capital of the Gaules, was an important stopover on the way to Britannia. Several roman villae were built in the area. The mosaic of the boat prows from the Grange du Bief villa is the only one we have left. It can be seen at the archaeological museum of Anse.
This article reviews the history of Asa Paulina, the mosaic of the Boat prows with detailed views and drawings of the 68 different motifs used by the mosaicists, and suggestions for a pleasant stay in Beaujolais

Langres, autrefois Andematunnum, a prospéré a l’epoque romaine en tant que plaque tournante reliant la capitale des Gaules Lyon avec la Méditerranée et le Rhin.
Le Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Langres expose fierement ses riches collections artistiques et archéologiques. Un des joyaux des collections archéologiques est la splendide mosaïque de Bachus datee du IIe siècle après JC.
En voyageant au musée en juin 2023, j'y ai admire trois mosaïques captivantes : la grande mosaique de Bacchus et deux pièces plus petites provenant d'une villa romaine voisine. J'ai ajouté à ce récit la mosaïque polychrome d'Orbigny au Mont, autrefois exposée au musée.

Langres, once Andematunnum, flourished as a Roman hub linking Lyon, the Mediterranean, and the Rhine. The town's elevation facilitated strategic oversight, propelling its metamorphosis into a fortified bastion during the Roman Empire's decline.
The Museum of Art and History in Langres proudly exhibits a rich tapestry of art and archaeology. It beckons as a conduit to the past, echoing the spirit of Gallo-Roman magnificence and the fortitude that shaped its enduring legacy. A pinnacle of its archaeological collections is the splendid 2nd-century AD Dionysos mosaic.
Journeying to the museum in June 2023, I encountered three captivating mosaics: the grand Dionysos masterpiece and two smaller pieces from a nearby Roman Villa. I added to this narrative the polychrome mosaic from Orbigny au Mont, once exhibited at the museum. Together those four mosaics stand as portals, offering a glimpse into Langres' grandeur:

Aussi, la pioche des explorateurs de profession et la charrue des laboureurs y ont-elles fait surgir de terre, depuis surtout un siècle et demi, une quantité d'objets qui intéressent, au plus haut point, l'archéologie. Il suint, pour s'en convaincre, de lire le tableau, déjà incomplet à l'époque où il écrivait, et plus incomplet encore aujourd'hui, que traçait des heureuses découvertes, faites dans la région, un antiquaire, d'ailleurs, fort averti : M. Luquet (1). Sur cent deux villages que contient l'arrondissement de Langres, le futur évêque d'Hésébon, en citait quatre-vingt-six du sol desquels avait été exhumé, soit fortuitement, soit autrement, quelque curieux témoin et spécimen plus ou moins important de l'une des civilisations que se sont succédées dans la contrée.

Following the expansion westwards of the Chinese Han Empire at the end of the 1st century AD the ... more Following the expansion westwards of the Chinese Han Empire at the end of the 1st century AD the Parthian kingdom entered China’s political horizon. Gan Ying, a Chinese envoy was at the head of a diplomatic mission charged with establishing direct contacts and business relationships with the Roman Empire, the final destination for most of the goods they were exporting to the West. Gan Ying was able to reach Arsacid controlled south Mesopotamia. Although very close to the Roman territory he did not manage to go further and accomplish his task. The Parthian leaders, well aware of the commercial role they played between Rome and China, dissuaded him from trying to proceed. This largely unknown but extremely interesting episode in the ancient history of Asia provides direct evidence concerning the political and commercial role of Parthia, Rome’s fierce enemy, in central Asia and along the Silk Route.
I did not write this paper, it was written by Leonardo Gregoratti. I simply added 3 maps to help visualize the path followed by the Chinese envoy.

While acting in that country as an instructor in some of the leading colleges, both military and civilian, he had opportunities of making a thorough and systematic study of both the "noble sciences" of kenjutsu and jujutsu.
He was probably the first Occidental who has gone at all deeply into these two branches of Japanese education.
I re-edited this book based on several poor versions available on line.
