Starting from the point of view that participatory art cannot be properly evaluated within the traditional framework of art criticism, which uses purely aesthetic and formal conceptual tools, the author is resorting to more general concepts within the field of philosophy. In this project Rancière’s rehabilitation of aesthetics and his critique of the ethical turn of aesthetics prove particularly helpful, as do the consideration of the historical failure of aesthetics as a philosophical treatment of art and its consequences for critical discourse on contemporary participatory art. In this context, affect becomes the key which unlocks the door towards harmonizing body and emotions. The cultural turn in aesthetics itself brings us an open mind platform, where the historical methods of studying the senses, emotions and feelings embodied in art objects are increasingly substituted by studies of aesthetical processes and performativity. Psychoanalysis, deconstruction of poststructuralism and the establishment of a tighter alliance between theory and the artistic practice itself were the factors which significantly contributed to the evaluation of the latter. Another important contribution in this evaluation sprang from feminist thought concentrating on the body. Aesthetics is in this context returning to its or...

Theoretical reflection on this field requires cross-disciplinary networking and transdisciplinary treatment, intersectional co-operation of disciplines, and the deployment of new methodological approaches that often result from the recombination of already existing methods and procedures. We are dealing with the consequences of the productive fading of the boundaries of different areas (especially aesthetics, political philosophy, new urban studies and contemporary art history), i.e. by introducing new hybrid research subjects, which expound the potentials of ever new, yet unexplored areas, which can also be marked on the level of terminology. The discussion aims to contribute to the analysis of participatory art from the perspective of intermediate spaces betwe...

This new philosophy of sensation and perception is radically different from the aesthetics and philosophy of art that primarily concern the aesthetics of a work of art. Ranciere prefers to talk about the aesthetic regime of art that addresses the complex and contradictory relationship between the autonomy of art and the overcoming of the boundaries separating art and life. Such an overcoming is in the foundation of both avant-garde art as well as contemporary art practices, which are the focus of our discussion. The efforts of emerging participatory art in the 1990s to achieve social change follow the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. The paper aims to contribute to the analysis of community-oriented art from aesthetic and political perspectives and to evaluate the significance of th...

The paper finds that the 56th Biennale has demonstrated a diminishing faith in progress and in the weakening emancipatory power of art. At the same time, it has also undermined the domination of the Western view because the exhibition began to open to non-European perspectives, too.
