Sexual and Relationship Therapy, 2015

ABSTRACT Research on how sexual changes are understood as dysfunctions versus normal change remai... more ABSTRACT Research on how sexual changes are understood as dysfunctions versus normal change remains scarce, namely in societies where traditional gender roles persist among the growing diversity of sexual relationships and practices. This article discusses controversies on sexual function definitions through sociology of diagnosis and sexual scripting theoretical frameworks, drawing on 313 structured interviews with primary healthcare users of the Greater Lisbon area, followed by in-depth interviews with a subsample of 25 heterosexual men and women. The low level of agreement found between the scores of the most widely used instruments for sexual function evaluation in epidemiology studies and self-diagnosis may be understood as a challenge for the predominant biomedical model and a need to re-conceptualize sexual dysfunctions other than as organic dysfunctions, with implications for both research and practice. Results show that individuals not only challenge illness concepts and sexual dysfunction diagnoses and their treatments, as they also construct sexual problems based on their impacts in daily life. Demonstrating the permanence of traditional social scripts that operate in the definitions of sexual function is one way to understand gender as an embodied social structure and get adequate practice to the problem, particularly in the Portuguese society where sexuality remains highly gendered.

To date, research on the association of the various family–parenthood aspirations of TGGD people with distinct affirming paths and identities remains scarce. A survey was conducted aiming to characterize the TGGD population’s diversity and socio-demographic profile. A community-based convenience sample of 115 self-identified TGGD adults living in Portugal was collected. Most of the participants (69%) did not have any children, 10% had children of their own, and about 20% did not have children in the present but reported their intensions to have children in the future. The results were discussed, highlighting the heterogeneity found in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, gender identification, and gender affirmation pathways (social, legal, and medical), with a focus on the participants’ parenthood aspirations. The under- or non-representation of transgender individuals in population surveys, such as demog...

ABSTRACT The observation that practically no sociological study on the place and function of sexu... more ABSTRACT The observation that practically no sociological study on the place and function of sexuality in nursing practice exists prompted us to carry out a qualitative social-psychological study in 2007 and 2008 among 64 nurses and caregivers working in the general area of cancer care, applying the sexual scripts theory (Gagnon, 1990), which proposes a distinction between cultural scenarios, interpersonal scripts and intra-psychic scripts. To deal with the specifically professional aspects related to sexuality as it emerged in the interviews, the theory was completed and further developed by the concept of ‘professional scenario’. Our survey brought to light problems related to communication involving sexuality and to the eroticization of healthcare relationships. This in turn revealed a double opposition between: cultural scenarios wherein the nurse becomes the object of sexual fantasies as against professional scenarios aiming to desexualize the caregiver in the nurse-patient relationship, and eroticization, perceived as either facilitating or hindering that relationship. When it is included in nurses’ professional scenarios, taking into account the eroticization of care-giving can be beneficial to both patient and nurse.

As such activities in older age remain largely underexamined, this study aimed to explore OSAs in a sample of Italian older adults, analyzing their associations with gender and sexual orientation, considering sexual permissiveness as a moderator. Methods One hundred and fourteen cisgender participants (85 men and 29 women) aged from 52 to 79 years old (M = 62.57, SD = 6.19) were recruited between September 2019 and January 2020 to participate in an online cross-sectional survey on OSAs. Results A total of 58.1% of participants had engaged in S-OSAs at least 2–3 times during the previous month, while a lower percentage of participants had engaged in N-OSAs (38.6%) and P-OSAs (29.9%) at least 2–3 times during the previous month.

It draws on an intellectual history perspective, informed by recent developments in science and technology studies and political history of science. This book examines how specific social, cultural, intellectual, scientific and political contexts have shaped theories of sexuality and related practices in medicine, psychology, education and sexology. Furthermore, it explores various ways that theories of sexuality have both informed and been produced by sexologies-as scientific and clinical discourses about sex-in Western countries since the 19th century.

It created many new freedoms for gay men, youth and women, in terms of sexual imagery, information, and rights. Leftists denounced the revolution's consumerism whilst feminists lamented its continuation of sexism. Conservatives criticised the extreme individualism which it purportedly encouraged and the subsequent loss of traditional values. The contributions chosen by Gert Hekma and Alain Giami offer a critical exploration of these changes in the Western world, as well as in the USSR, engaging with topics such as abortion, contraception, sexuality, paedophilia, pornography, and the law. Surveys from this time suggest a transformation in the practices and attitudes of the general population. A comprehensive analysis of this shift, Sexual Revolutions explores the views of feminists, leftists, liberals, artists, scholars and church leaders. The repercussions of the sexual revolution went beyond sexuality. It was a Gesamtkunstwerk that coincided with major social changes in issues such as religiosity, education, justice, medicine, politics, institutions, and arts, and so this work begins to reveal the many aspects of the sexual revolution.

Research paper thumbnail of Sexologies et théories de la sexualité A MULTIDISCIPLINARY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE HISTORY OF SEXOLOGY Réseau Sexologies européennes European sexologies network

This two-day conference proposes to examine the history of conceptions of sexuality and of gender relations that have, explicitly or implicitly, been used in sexological “constructions” since the mid-19th century.

The knowledge, theories and practices to which “sexology” refers imply specific conceptions of sexuality. Sexology is a social (and, above all, medical, psychological, psychiatric or even legal) response to the questions people ask about “their sexuality”. Its history has shifted from a “proto-sexology”, centered around perversions and deviancies, to a second phase with a focus on the “function of orgasm” and on sexual behaviors (Béjin 1982). Sexology is evolving with the emergence of “sexual medicine”, “sexual health” and “sexual rights”, trends that weigh on the reformulation of theories of sexuality. Papers will present material from medical, scientific or educational sources or from institutions involved in the medicalization of sexuality.

The accepted papers will be grouped by subject, geographical area, historical period or historiographical approach as a function of the two-day program, and each group will be assigned a discussant who will Chair the session and open discussion of the papers presented. Abstracts and papers can be submitted and presented in English or French. There will not be official simultaneous translation during the conference. Participants are expected to understand both languages.

Plans are in the works for editing the papers presented at the conference for a book to be published by a French publishing house specialized in multidisciplinary books.
