It is a known fact that blindness occurs within 1-30 months even in feline glaucoma patients where intraocular pressure (IOP) is controlled with medical treatment and vision is present. This study comprised 11 eyes with glaucoma, in a total of 10 cats (3 female, 7 male). The selected and performed surgical methods were; cyclocryosurgery in 6 patients, trabeculectomy in 3 and chemical ablation in 1 patient. The patients were re-examined at regular intervals in the post-operative period and changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and the degree of pain and vision were assessed. Nine cats with vision prior to surgery were assessed on post-operative Day 60 for criteria including; IOP, presence of vision and pain. The blind cat was assessed with respect to IOP and pain. The results of trabeculectomy performed in 3 cats with visio...

In this report, we aimed to suggest a different way for the surgical treatment of dorsal scapular luxation in cats. The study material comprised of 6 cats presented to our clinics. Intra-operatively, in all the patients it was determined that the ventral serratus and rhomboideus muscles were ruptured, however, the trapezius muscle was undamaged. In surgical intervention, cauterization of contact surfaces of two muscle to improve adhesion and suturing of serratus and rhombeideus muscles to infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles was carried out respectively. In the clinical follow-up examination on post-operative day 15, dorsal luxation of the affected extremity during weight-bearing had completely disappeared in all of the patients. On the telephone consultation 2 months after operation,...

The IOP measurement can be obtained without any problem in calm animals. However, some animals do not allow IOP measurement without sedation or anesthesia. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of xylazine HCl (as a sedative) and ketamine HCl (as an anesthetic in combination with xylazine HCl) on the IOP in dogs. In this study, 35 dogs of different breed, age and gender that were brought to Istanbul University Veterinary Faculty Education and Research Hospital Surgery Department with different surgical indications were used. As a result xylazine HCl sedation and xylazine HCl + ketamine HCl anesthesia decrease the intraocular pressure significantly and the IOP measurements in glaucoma suspicious dogs must be obtained without xylazine HCl sedation or xylazine HCl + ketamine HCl anesthesia were determined.

In this study, 14 cats brought to the surgery clinic between the years 2010 and 2015 for fracture, due to either a road traffic accident or falling from a height, were evaluated. Following clinical and radiological examination of the cases, the type and location of the fracture, details of the applied fixation method, and postoperative clinical and radiological results were assessed. Localization of the fractures was as follows: 4 comminuted diaphyseal (1 segmental), 6 comminuted distal, and 4 uncomplicated distal transversal fractures. All fractures were closed. Following intramedullary positioning of the pins, rigid stabilization was observed in the fracture line. In the case of the segmental fracture, better stabilization was achieved when the medullary canal was completely filled. The patients were able to use their extremities 3-5 days after surgery and started walking normally from postoperative day 10. Functional healing was seen to improve gradually. Radiographic examination revealed sufficient calli to have formed between days 32 and 44. Complete healing and return to function with no complications was recorded in all the cases.

This is the only way to counteract craniocaudal and dorsoventral forces acting on the mandibular symphysis. However, this prolongs intraoperative time for the application and removal of cerclage wire, as well as necessitating deep sedation or general anaesthesia for removal. The aim of this study is to present the application stages and efficacy of a new technique (IAIS-Interdental and Interfragmentary Stabilisation) achieving both interdental and interfragmentary stabilisation in a single operation using only cerclage wire, with no need for extra stabilisation. For this purpose, the authors used the IAIS technique in the treatment of 46 patients presented to the surgery clinic between the years 2007-2015 and diagnosed with mandibular symphysis separation. Weekly post-operative follow-up examinations were carried out and clinical recovery time was evaluated. In conclusion, this new technique may be used effectively in the treatment of dislocated-uninfected and open-infected-dislocated mandibular sympyhsis separations.
