Hello!I know this may have been asked many times before, so I'm sorry for the repetition, but I feel a little desperate! Can someone direct me to a place I can read Wasted online for free? This would be such great help, thank you to anyone who could help me!

Just wanted to share my happiness that arrived in the mail this week in the form of The Center of Winter :DI am loving it! At the beginning it was strange because I am used to Marya beign quick and direct and here I found a lot of descriptions and the narrative was slow, sometimes a bit boring in the sense that I found myself thinking "When will something happen?" and then boom! after about ten pages I was so hooked. The book is totally Marya, the way she writes, the verb "holler" which appeared in Wasted a lot, the magic way in which she describes the change of seasons, the sarcastic humor... Have I mentioned that I love this writer beyond passion? :) The book reminds me a lot of To kill a mockingbird with touches of the Big African-American novels, specially Their eyes were watching god (Z.N. Hurston) and Song of Solomon (T. Morrison), and DEFINITELY it reminds me a lot of My Place a novel by native-Australian author Sally Morgan... but maybe it's just me -lol-( i put something in itCollapse )

I just bought Madness and am really enjoying it (though it makes me question even further a mental health industry and society that could ignore such a glaring problem for that long and miss the forest for the trees, but that's another post...). But what I really like about Marya's autobiographical books is that they're not these "Jesus/my therapist saved me and now I'm 100% better!" books like most books about mental illness (especially anorexia) are. She's honest about the fact that she's not totally better and may never be. I'm just glad someone is willing to be that open.

This comm is not very active, and since I've been watching Marya's interview on youtube, I thought I'd post it here :D I finished Madness last week and adored itI don't like the interviewer though, she is either extremely shy or weird, but I just foudn her boring, and is it just me or does she seem intimidate dby Marya? well, I think Marya's manner of speech is so straightforward and strong that she can be intimidating, but.. I don't know, the interviewer was just bleh to me..PART 1part 2part 3

My Connection to Marya... [30 Apr 2008|09:58am]
Hey Everyone! I'm sort of new to livejournal, but wanted to join this group because Marya is actually the FIRST author I ever talked to when I began thinking about writing a body image book a couple years ago...she actually took the time to e-mail me back and forth for a couple of months to answer questions and give advice...so I definitely think a lot of her.Right now, I'm working with Carolyn Costin, author of "The Eating Disorder Sourcebook" on an advice book for women with disordered eating and image issues...we're finishing up the proposal right now, and then my agent will be bringing it to some of the editors who've shown interest so far...If you want to check out my website for more info, it's http://www.realfemalesunite.com. I also started a health & body image message board at http://www.realfemales.proboards54.com. That's been a great place for a few great ladies and myself to get together and chat about whatever's on our minds...And don't forget to stop by my journal too--I'm getting lonely over there, LOL!!!

Eating disorder bloggers wanted for survey [31 Mar 2008|12:28pm]
I am a current graduate student researching the social history of food-related disorders, inspired, in large part, from my own struggles with anorexia and bulimia. I'm conducting an anonymous survey of bloggers who blog about eating disorders or eating disorder recovery in partnership with a clinical psychologist for joint research and publication purposes. I'm hoping our survey generates lots of responses so that our findings are well-rounded, inclusive and convincing. The only two requirements are that you must have an active blog and that it must address, at least in part, your experiences with an eating disorder. I'm hoping for responses from people of all ages and genders who are in all stages of recovery and who suffer from a diversity of eating disorders, from anorexia to binge eating disorder to ed-nos to orthorexia. If the scope of the study pertains to your own experiences, I invite you to participate by taking it. More information and a survey link can be found here or http://the-f-word.org/blog/index.php/2008/03/23/eating-disordered-bloggers-wanted-for-survey/Thank you!Rachel Richardson

Just something I noticed as I was re-reading "Wasted":It seemed although Marya was underaged that she was easily able to be in bars. For instance, when she was visiting Washington DC to decide if she wanted to go to school there she talked about being in the hotel bar, drinking screwdrivers and eating carrot and celery sticks while writing manically in her notebook.Another example is when she met Mark; on there first "real" date, she talked about them going to dinner and "drinking alot of wine" in the restaraunt.I wonder if she just looked THAT much older that the bartender/waiter didnt card her, or if in the eighties they were more lax about it, or what.I dont know if this will even interest anyone else, its just something I noticed.
