Ever see the musical Les Miserables? Or one of the many movies based on Victor Hugo's epic novel? Or even read the novel yourself? The insurrection from which Jean Valjean rescued Cosette's beloved Marius was based on a true event in French history. Additional to his own fictional barricade, Hugo wrote briefly of a larger one at the Cloistre Saint-Merry. This barricade was led by a man named Charles Jeanne. This man, who was decorated as a hero for his actions during the revolution that put Louis Phillipe on the French throne in 1830, was tried and condemned for similar actions following the funeral of General Lamarque in June 1832. Jeanne was sent to prison on Mont-Saint-Michel, which broke his health and sent him to an untimely death in 1837.Come share in the discovery of the facts about Jeanne's life, what actions made him heroic in one instance and treasonous in another, what scandals plagued his imprisonment, and what connections he may have had to secret societies in Paris.Francophiles and historians welcome.saint_merry

This got me to wondering, how many shows/movies use this number? i know The Simpsons do it on a regular basis (it was Principal Skinner's prisioner number in Vietnam) but i was really curious...Has anyone else seen this anywhere?Mood: curious

He played Enjolras in one of the better film adapations from the middle of the last century. The man looked nothing like our blond hero, and I have never heard his real voice since the version of the movie I have is badly dubbed into English. But this version had most of the best lines and at least Enjolras's proper death. It is a sad thing to lose artists who seem to live so close to their work.PARIS (AFP) - The French singer and actor Serge Reggiani died overnight of a heart attack at the age of 82, his agent said. **( Read more...Collapse )**Mood: nostalgic

I've created a community for Regency and Romantic Era Clothing freaks. It was good... not the best i've seen... but still good. i do have to say... i'm not sure if i like the touring cast at the moment... or maybe it was just an off night. Cosette was the best i've seen... and Fantine was not a skinny woman but a larger sized one (she looked great) and she was a brunette!! most times i've seen an african american woman in the part they give her a blonde wig but they gave her a brown one... that was neat...and then in the wedding scene... When Thenardier is like, "This one's a queer, but what can you do?" the guy goes over to slap him and Thenardier kisses him. Is this normal and i just don't remember it... or was that new?it was... interesting...Mood: curious

This is my first post in this community! To get straight to the point, I know that there have been a few movies made based on the novel, the most easily accesible one being the 1998 version with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush - which, from all reports, doesn't seem to accurately portay Victor Hugo's work. But a few friends of mine have told me that they once saw on tv a mini-series I think it was, based on Les Miserables that kept extremely close to the novel. I think it was possibly a french-made production? If anyone has any ideas about what this would have been and/or where I can get my hands on it, or even if anyone knows of a movie or mini-series that has done justice to the book, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!Desert Butterfly

It would basically be a community where everyone could claim a character (from the book or musical) and then you could write fanfic about your character or more like a RPG you could post messages to eachother from characters or just post about your character...does such a community already exist? If so, would there be need for another one? I have a code Im burning to use and I think this would be really cool...mostly cuz I like claiming things and such..so let me know

And on my 35th birthday too. What a pain. But I heard a squeak about "mourning the tour" from someone, and frantically began searching the official website and finally Playbill Online for news of the tour. The tour not having dates listed on the ticket finder didn't make me happy. No, not at all. And then I found the article about the tour being on hiatus.A hiatus. Just a short break. I do not like that there is no Les Mis in the US for even just a few months. Quick. Where's the closest student production?Mood: relieved
