This is no different for top-of-her-class Gabriel White Tenma, who believes it is her mission to be a great angel who will bring happiness to mankind. However, Gabriel grows addicted to video games on Earth and eventually becomes a hikikomori. Proclaiming herself a "Fallen Angel," she is apathetic to everything else—much to the annoyance of Vignette April Tsukinose, a demon whom Gabriel befriended in her angelic early days on Earth.Vignette's attempts to revert Gabriel back to her previous self are in vain, as Gabriel shoots down any attempt to change her precious lifestyle. As they spend their time on Earth, they meet two eccentric personalities: the angel Raphiel Ainsworth Shiraha, Gabriel's classmate with a penchant for sadism, and the demon Satanichia McDowell Kurumizawa, a clumsy self-proclaimed future ruler of the Underworld. Gabriel DropOut follows these four friends' comedic lives as they utterly fail to understand what it truly means to be a demon or an angel.[Written by MAL Rewrite]Related Entries Gabriel DropOut MALxJapan -More than just anime- Characters & Voice Actors Staff "Gabriel Drop Kick (ガヴリールドロップキック)" by Gabriel Tenma White (Miyu Tomita), Vignette Tsukinose April (Saori Oonishi), Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell (Naomi Oozora), Raphiel Shiraha Ainsworth (Kana Hanazawa) 1: "Gabriel Drop Kick (ガヴリールドロップキック)" by Gabriel Tenma White (Miyu Tomita), Vignette Tsukinose April (Saori Oonishi), Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell (Naomi Oozora), Raphiel Shiraha Ainsworth (Kana Hanazawa) (eps 1) 2: "Hallelujah☆Essaim (ハレルヤ☆エッサイム)" by Gabriel Tenma White (Miyu Tomita), Vignette Tsukinose April (Saori Oonishi), Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell (Naomi Oozora), Raphiel Shiraha Ainsworth (Kana Hanazawa) (eps 2-6, 8-12) 3: "Gabriel no kazoeuta (ガヴリールの数え歌)" by Vignette Tsukinose April (Saori Oonishi) (eps 7) Episode Videos Episode 12 Episode 11 Episode 10 Episode 9Reviews Oct 24, 2024 I am typically not well versed when it comes to CGDCT or comedy anime. I mostly started watching it for that one clip with Gab and a gun. Otherwise, Gabriel Dropout seemed generic by the looks of it. While some of it was, the added themes and art style made it worth giving it some consideration. Initially, I was unsure about how this anime would progress for the first few minutes, but as time passed I found myself just taking it easy and grounding myself in the present. Gabriel Dropout’s story is of very basic premise and is seemingly typical for a slice of life anime.... While it still pertains to a school setting, its main differentiator is the added mythological aspect of heaven and hell. The story revolves around distinct personalities of two angels (Gab and Raphi) and two demons (Satania and Vigne), whose characteristics largely contrast with the roles they were supposed to fulfill when sent down to Earth. As such, most of the plot will revolve around this gag. There is some semblance of plot progression and the passage of seasons which is celebrated through holidays, however most of it is reserved towards the end of the series. It is a basic slice of life that doesn’t require the viewer to give it their full attention. The simplicity of its premise allows it to be watched casually, though, I was pretty attentive. One minor complaint I have, unrelated to the comedy about the story, is how quickly Gab changes personalities versed in the human world. But even with this story’s basic premise, the main story was largely irrelevant. Comedy is subjective so most of its effectiveness can be from what people thought of the first episode or two. Most of it either revolves around slapstick humor or the gag about the roles of angels and demons reversing. Despite this, I found that a good chunk of the humor just came from the dialogue. Gab had the funniest lines, even though most of it didn't seem to be intentional. Some of the comedy unrelated to the dialogue became somewhat repetitive while the series progressed, for example most of Satania's gags involving what could be called another side character and her attempt at acting demonic were repeated throughout the series. While these gags definitely are overused, it was not to the point where it became unbearable or anything. It served as a good way to derive a cheap yet “hit or miss” source of comedy if that is what these people are into these days. On a related note, the slapstick comedy was sort of interchangeable with the running gags. If I had to quantify the enjoyment I derived from this anime, I would probably say I chuckled anywhere between a few and a little under a dozen times. The comedy peaked between episodes 3-6, mostly because of the character’s relations with each other. Gab, aka the best of the group, who was once a perfect angel at the top of her class, has now transformed into a lazy slob on Earth. Her angelic personality is displayed very briefly while she was first in contact with the human world. One she discovers the now daily aspects of a typical human life she becomes the opposite of what she once was. I wouldn’t describe her as much of a hikikomori as much as anyone else, although she was shown to be a hermit in a few of the episodes none of the other hikikomori aspects apply to her. Her sarcastic and apathetic attitude towards everyday life would make her unappealing were it not for bits of her some semblance of kindness and loyalty being directed elsewhere. This would be directed towards to her friend group. I found that the aspects of her which would be less appealing to the group were the most entertaining and the best part of the series. Raphi is more of a bully than a slob, and is the meanest out of the group. Like Gab, she has taken her likeness to the human world and hopes to do stuff not allowed in heaven. Most of her character consists of doing evil deeds under the disguise of a thin veiled happy smile. Most of her enjoyment comes out from doing these devilish deeds. Most of her time on Earth comes from teasing others. For example she is known persistently teasing Satania throughout the series, despite the teasing, most of it was light-hearted and entertaining. Vigne functions more as a blank slate and the mediator of the group, and is the nicest out of the group. She is often seen doing favors for the group, such as cleaning Gab’s room or disencouraging Satania at appropriate times. This isn’t to say she is without faults or that this personality is always present though. For instance, she still acts in character when necessary to correct the rest of the group or receive something of value from Earth. Her relation with Gab is also nice in the episodes relating to Holidays. Satania is basically the one who gets picked on the most. She is perceived as childish and immature by her friends. As a result, she is often teased by Raphi, who also encourages an animal to bother her. The routine harassment from the animal becomes a running gag in the series. Satania, much like Vigne, doesn’t act “demonic” at all, however this is not to say she acts “angelic” as Vigne would. Most of her character comes from failing to act as she is supposed to in hell. Her antics are more childish and directed at the angels, and much to their dismay, encourage this behavior because both of them outsmart her and find it funny to watch her fail. Truthfully, I thought Satania was annoying, her laughter, which can drag on for several seconds, gets pretty old after a while. The angels causing her a bit of distress was entertaining, and it was largely comedic without the intention of them bullying her or anything. This contrasts well with their more wholesome moments which was a better watch and a nice a nice break from the gag. The art carries the series. Well, it is CGDCT, and the cutesy artstyle is supposed to be the main appeal. The characters are well designed, and this is mostly due to the vibrant colors that contrast between the angels and the demons. The angels were designed a bit better, mostly because Satania and Vigne have weird looking hair. I liked Gab’s ahoge, this series really missed out on giving Satania one. The background was nice too, although it was largely unimportant compared to the character designs, it was nonetheless of good quality. The voice acting is done well and characterizes the girls perfectly. The opening theme is also great and I didn’t find myself skipping through it. For my final thoughts, it was a nice and easy viewing experience. There is little story that could have separated it from other school settings. The entire series was running on the gag of the angels acting like demons and vice versa. Even with this premise not being expanded upon much, it was still enjoyable to watch and a step up from what could have been a pretty average anime. The comedy is hit or miss, mostly because the girls are either cute or annoying. Most of their likability depends on either their cuteness or how funny their gags are. This anime is largely character driven, and it does so well. They are all fun to watch, particularly when they occasionally put their differences aside and the strength of their friendship shows. It was a good introductory to CGDCT anime, and I recommend if you are looking for something more laid back.Overall I give it a 7/10 Reviewer’s Rating: 7 What did you think of this review? It's a slice of life with a supernatural twist, but it doesn't feel as good as some of the best slice of life out there. The characters don't seem interesting enough, and I think characters are the biggest reason you'd enjoy an anime like this. Only two of the four main characters are interesting to watch, and that is definitely not enough. The whole concept could be fun, but the end result feels quite boring. It's something that's good to watch while you're doing something else, but there's not really a reason to completely... focus on it when you're watching. NiceNice0 Love itLove it0 FunnyFunny0 ConfusingConfusing0 InformativeInformative0 Well-writtenWell-written0 CreativeCreative0Show all Jun 23, 2024 First, let me say that this anime is not good. That’s right, it’s not good. Yes, it features one of the best characters in all anime, Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell, a genius archdemon who controls the show every time she’s on screen with her absolutely demonic deeds and nefarious exploits. But then you have the other characters. While Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell excels in every scene she’s in, you also have Raphiel, one of the absolute worst characters I have ever seen. What is her trait? That she’s a sadist? That’s it? Yes, that’s it. She likes to see others suffering, including Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell. She never... does anything amusing, heartwarming, or cute. She just disrespects Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell, forces her way into her home, or tries to trick her as if she were a plush toy. We all might want to be entertained by Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell, but we are on this side of the screen; she is not. If you are going to be in the show, try to earn your place and do something actually fun for once. For every scene where the genius Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell shines, there is a scene where Raphiel ruins the show. She is incredibly annoying, disgusting, and boring to watch. I hate her, hate her, hate, hate, hate. Sure, you might have characters you like and dislike in a show, but her presence serves absolutely no purpose other than being a passive watcher of Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell’s genius, which she always disrespects. The other two characters, the most passive ones, barely have any effect on the show at all. Vignette is a good girl, so she doesn’t do bad things, cause any shenanigans, and is reliable. While she would be great to have as a friend, watching her life is dreadfully boring. Gabriel is the same but in the opposite direction. She is a slacker, so she doesn’t do good deeds. She is lazy and always stays at home. While she would be terrible to have as a friend, she could theoretically be a good protagonist in a comedy. You’ve seen other anime with listless characters that only want to be left alone, right? Saiki K, for example? These shows make great use of the listless protagonist since they are always met with energetic and cheerful people who want them to live life and do silly things. This can be great for comedy when the protagonist’s cynical perspective deconstructs the silly traditions and realities they live in. Here? They don’t do that. Gabriel is never really punished for anything, and even Vignette helps with her homework, albeit reluctantly. Gabriel might get bored by having her friends around, but no jokes ever come from it—nothing, zero. There is barely any comedy here. The jokes are very scarce and might rely on some occasional slapstick or the fact that the angels act like demons and the demons like angels. Still, nobody ever suffers any consequences, leaving you with tasteless comedy without misery. Overall, despite having a character like Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell, who is sheer genius, the others don’t help the show at all. Vignette is the most blank slate for a good girl character, Gabriel is useless as a protagonist since she never makes anything happen, and Raphiel is one of the most despicable and awful characters in anime. She isn’t a horrifying villain that incarnates evil, an ambiguous scientist with a goal that sacrifices means for an end, an underdog, or anything interesting. She is just a spoiled brat bored with her life, only interested in schadenfreude. I still ask myself: How? How did this even happen? Having an anti-hero as a protagonist is a great idea. Making the feminine angel unfeminine, unkempt, and uncool—just a slacker like any other—can bring a lot of comedy with all the silly stuff you can do in animation. But she never ever does anything like that!If you watch this as a comedy, it’s barren. If you watch this as a CGDCT anime, it’s still pretty bad, considering we only have one truly good character. One is as average as they come Vignette, one makes you bitter from how boring they are to watch, Gabriel, and one fills your soul with absolute hate, raising your anger to the max and making you wish you could punch her until all her teeth fall out, Raphael. Seriously, what a disgusting creature. If one can hope, is that Satanichia Kurumizawa McDowell one day gets her own spin off, away of all the mess her friends are, she was the true start of the show after all, and the only you should really pay attention too if you even decide to go through this mess. Megumin got her own spinoff, so why not her as well? Reviewer’s Rating: 4 What did you think of this review?
