limited number of royal tomb inventories are preserved from Ancient Egypt. Thus, it is the main aim
of the German Abydos project to gather as much as possible from the burial equipment, no matter
how fragmented the objects are nowadays. That this endeavour has its limits due to a diversity of
reasons will be discussed in this paper. On the basis of some examples it will be shown that the effort
is nevertheless worthwhile, as also tiny bits and pieces can tell a lot of information revealing the
immense quality and high standard of Early Dynastic workmanship that otherwise would be lost.

of the royal tomb complexes at Umm el-Qaʽab. It is
conspicuous that the tombs are not as regularly oriented
as the enclosures, and that areas were left vacant for no
evident reason; this holds true particularly for the space
to the east of Den’s tomb. It seems that much larger
parts of the landscape were taken into account than
hitherto surmised. Thus, for instance, the wadi entrance
was not the only point of orientation; a spot to the
north of the tombs and another to the east are emphasized
by the layout of the tombs. Interestingly, the
tombs are not aligned towards the enclosures that are
conspicuously situated on the opposite side of the wadi
entrance.

in this respect are small models of granaries made from mud, as well as gaming pieces in the shape of granaries.
But also larger models as well as pottery vessels in the shape of silos have been found in tombs. The author compiles
the evidence and proposes an interpretation going beyond the supposition of symbolically supplying the deceased
with grain.

The results from various field works and scientific analyses are summarized, a list of all publications at the end are providing the reader with further literature. The main research activities and initiatives of the OREA institute are presented including an overview map with all projects and a more detail description of the OREA research activities in Austria. The newly founded raw material lab is described as well as the various archives and their sources. The institutes’ journals and publication series appeared in 2017 are presented as well.

The 10th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE) was held in ... more The 10th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE) was held in Vienna in April 2016, organized by the Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA), the Austrian Academy of Sciences with the support of the University of Vienna, a generous welcome by the City of Vienna, and the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs. More than 800 participants from 38 countries presented their latest research in 8 parallel sections and 28 workshops (to be published in separate volumes). Additionally, a poster section with more than 80 posters was organized – a number of them integrated here in the chapters relevant to the corresponding topics.
The two-volume proceedings contain numerous contributions presented during the 10th ICAANE, giving an overview of current research, excavations and activities in Near Eastern archaeology. The first volume includes the "Statement about the Threat to Cultural Heritage in the Near East and North Africa", signed in the course of the 10th ICAANE, as well as papers of the sections Transformation & Migration, Archaeology of Religion & Ritual, Images in Context and Islamic Archaeology. The second volume is dedicated to the main topics Prehistoric and Historical Landscapes & Settlement Patterns and Economy & Society, and is completed with Excavation Reports & Summaries.
