The theatre terrace of ancient Aigeira is considered to be one of the most interesting architectu... more The theatre terrace of ancient Aigeira is considered to be one of the most interesting architectural ensembles of the Hellenistic period on the Peloponnese. Its exploration is one of the foci of the long-term activities of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Aigeira. This volume, edited by Walter Gauß, presents both results from the earlier excavations by Wilhelm Alzinger in the 1970s and 1980s as well as recent research conducted under the direction of the editor in this area between 2011 and 2018. The lavish expansion of the previously scarcely built-up area into a new public centre with religious and secular buildings began around the middle of the 3rd century BC and marks the beginning of Aigeira's heyday. This is closely linked to the history of the Achaian League and lasted into the Roman imperial period. Until the 1st century BC, the theatre, a Doric peripteros, a large peristyle building and several small temple-like buildings, so-called naiskoi, were erected in the theatre area. The latter were probably used as treasuries, dining or cult buildings. While Aigeira remained an urban centre until the beginning of Late Antiquity, the theatre area had lost its function as a public centre by this time and served as a workshop area in the 4th/5th century AD. Fourteen contributions discuss aspects of the development and design of individual buildings, selected groups of small finds, and questions regarding the function of the area and its importance for the political and religious life at Aigeira.

Dieser Beitrag fasst die zwischen 2011 und 2018 durchgeführten Arbeiten im Bereich des hellenisti... more Dieser Beitrag fasst die zwischen 2011 und 2018 durchgeführten Arbeiten im Bereich des hellenistischen und römischen öffentlichen Zentrums rund um das Theater in Aigeira zusammen. Dabei werden die Forschungsergebnisse von Wilhelm Alzinger diskutiert, und es wird versucht, diese durch die Einbeziehung der Grabungskontexte und Auswertung der Funde aus seinen Ausgrabungen auf eine neue, nachvollziehbare Grundlage zu stellen. Ebenfalls vorgestellt werden die zwischen 2017 und 2018 im Bereich des Theaters durchgeführten Ausgrabungen. Ziel dieser Arbeiten waren Nachuntersuchungen in den Bauten D, E und F, um Fragen insbesondere hinsichtlich deren zeitlicher Einordnung zu klären. Bereits 1925 wurden von Otto Walter drei weitere Gebäude, die Bauten A, B und C, teilweise freigelegt. Angaben zu Funden aus diesen Bauten fehlen ebenso wie Anhaltspunkte zu ihrer zeitlichen Stellung und Funktion. Ziel unserer Nachuntersuchungen war es, die genaue Lage der Bauten zu klären und Anhaltspunkte über ihre zeitliche Einordnung und Nutzung zu gewinnen.

We show an extensive multimethod geophysical study of focusing on some enigmatic subsurface struc... more We show an extensive multimethod geophysical study of focusing on some enigmatic subsurface structures found at Ancient Aigeira (N Peloponnes, Greece) that could be interpreted either as prehistoric chamber tombs or complex weathering patterns of the local marl-conglomerate rock sequences. It turns out that the nonseismic methods do not allow to distinguish between an archaeological and a geological origin of the observed patterns with certainty. In contrast, we demonstrate how shear-wave seismics and full-waveform inversion (FWI) can be used in archaeological prospection for distinguishing between these alternative essentially different interpretational models that are not distinguishable through nonseismic prospection data. The example site Aigeira is strategically well located on a hill on the Northern Peloponnese overlooking the Corinthian Gulf and has been inhabited with occupational gaps since Middle Neolithic times until the 12th to early 14th century CE.
