A less technical and shorter version of this text was published as Gijs Dekkers, 2000, L’évolution du pouvoir d’achat des retraités: Une application du modèle de microsimulation STATION. in: Pestieau,

The papers all deal with tax issues and are selected on the basis of innovativeness and relevance for all IJM readers.

This paper was prepared as part of the Adequacy of Old-Age Income Maintenance in the EU (AIM) project -which has received financing from the European Commission under the 6 th Research Framework Programme (contract no. SP21- CT-2005-513748). The views expressed are attributable only to the authors and not to any institution with which they are associated.

Starting from the Shorrocks decomposition, we apply bootstrapping to construct confidence intervals for both the annual decomposition and the changes over time. It appears that the redistributive impact of the Belgian social security system did not become smaller in an absolute sense between 1985 and 1997, but -due to the large increase in labour income inequality -only in a proportional sense.

The drawback of each team working on its own is that they have to put a lot of time and effort in the customary development of fairly general simulation tools. Hence, economies of scale cannot be exploited, which makes microsimulation models even more expensive than strictly necessary. The objective of this paper is to present LIAM2, a free and open source modelling framework designed for the development of discrete-time dynamic models. It is meant to make microsimulation models much easier to develop. This paper makes a comparison with other simulation frameworks, presents a minimal LIAM2 model and discusses its performance in terms of data capacity and simulation speed.

It shows how this can be used to jointly assess the budgetary costs of demographic ageing and pension reform, as well as their consequences on the adequacy of pensions. The paper will then discuss in more detail how such integrated approach using shared demographic and macroeconomic assumptions has been developed in Belgium. It describes the dynamic microsimulation model MIDAS, highlighting how it aligns to the simulation results of the semi-aggregate model MALTESE.
