Is there an interrelation between the demotivation and the particular context, in this case, a comprehensive university well-known for its social and human sciences? How to place the French discipline in a comprehensive university and in Chinese higher education? Based on social representation theory, the concept « representation of the discipline » is proposed by Y. Reuter to research the disciplinary conscience of the subjects by students at primary or secondary schools. Thanks to this concept, we propose this qualitative study to explore social representations of French discipline among the French major students in Renmin University of China in order to clarify the deep reasons of the students’ attitudes in French discipline education, the images of French discipline, their beliefs of the values of French discipline. The major findings are as follows : the lack of integrative motivation is the most prominent characteristics of French major students in Renmin University of China; in their opinions, French discipline is rather a practical discipline than theoretical discipline, a discipline which depended on another discipline of social or human
sciences. Its value of human science is ignored by most of the students. This question demands an in-depth discussion and remains to be resolved in future research.
