Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an umbrella term for a spectrum of complex developmental disord... more Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an umbrella term for a spectrum of complex developmental disorders resulting in deficits in social communication and repetitive and stereotyped behaviors (APA 2013). Research in the area revealed that young children with ASD are interested in technology. This preference for technology may lead to promising intervention models (Annaz et al. 2012; Klin et al. 2009; Fong et al. 2003). This paper includes research into how to design and use technology to create suitable products for deficits of ASD. With all the concern over the high prevalence ratios of ASD, this study presents the methodology and design of a risk assessment device, which aims to capture the interest of children with ASD aged 3-4, and direct children who score low on the tests towards a diagnosis. The tests in the device are designed to detect differences with ToM tests between ASD and typically developing (TD) children. In the scope of the paper, 2D illustrations, interface design, and outer shell design of the device are created in compliance with the research data in the field.

The live coding method, which focuses on a single main application window, allows one to effectively execute several distributed tasks simultaneously, such as music composition, sound design, sound effects, and musical performance in real-time without losing track of the theatrical text’s flow. In terms of the compositional approach, live coding will be proposed as a holistic sound and music creation technique that centers on using textual systems to depict elaborate forms of artistic expression.

This paper focuses on the archival process of the multimedia artist Teoman Madra who is an acclai... more This paper focuses on the archival process of the multimedia artist Teoman Madra who is an acclaimed artist creating artworks with technological means of multimedia capabilities between the 1960s to early 2000s. Preserving multimedia artworks is a challenging task that requires comprehensive solutions due to the nature of the alwayschanging technological environment. It is inevitable that there is a paradigm shift from the traditional approach to preserve the artworks as self-contained physical objects to a broader scope of regarding the artwork as an entity with its tangible and intangible dimensions. This manuscript stands as the debut academic dissemination of the intensive archiving process of the Turkish multimedia artist Teoman Madra and it aims to shed light on the missing answers for the following question, "How did the media arts evolve in Turkey between the 1960s and 2000s?" The cataloging process of the linear media (VHS, BETAMAX, miniDV, negatives, diapositive, etc) and the methodologies implemented for descriptive analysis have been discussed in detail.

When a continuous action was broken into its constituent elements, it was observed that continuity could also be described as a kinesis of sequential iterations. Advance use of machinery allowed sophisticated tasks to be analysed in detail to construct its building components to formulate a fabrication system. Consequently, futurist artists were heavily inspired by the flourishing technological advancements in the early 20th century and portrayed these inspirations in the various forms of art. However, due to its provocative uncanny manners, Futurism Art has not been embraced extensively in the scope of art discourse. This article reflects on the findings of the data visualization project Dystopia-Utopia (www.dystopia-utopia.com) and investigates the existence of a common discourse that would stand out in Science Fiction Movies as a significant social modifier. In this approach with the use of a built interactive Circular Hierarchial Edge Bundling Data Visualization system, the data provided by the online participants have been analyzed and the results show that Dystopia theme has been more frequently spoken in the discourse of mainstream Science Fiction Movies.

Each individual in the society, which is in an inevitable relationship with technology, is involv... more Each individual in the society, which is in an inevitable relationship with technology, is involved in the use and development of artificial intelligence in a large part of their daily activities in a conscious or unconscious manner. The artificial intelligence, which is implemented in many fields of activities such as driverless vehicle design, financial analysis, special education applications, marketing analyses, music classification applications, also diverge in various application areas. As a natural consequence of this situation, artificial intelligence's implementations inthe art are also presented in a variety of recentartworks. It is a matter of wonder to what extent the artificial intelligence that is relying on mathematical grounds with rational symbol systems and the art that has been based on the concept of creativity, yet which is very difficult to define, are integrated into a well-balanced configuration. The findings and research results obtained by artificial intelligence are usually fueled by the basic questionings of human existence. This article discusses the development of artificial intelligence and the various scientific definitions that are being widely appreciated. Moreover, the relationship of creativity with artificial intelligence is examined by exploring the development of information technologies and its effects on contemporary artworks are investigated.

As computational systems have become an integral part of our daily lives, we often see that conte... more As computational systems have become an integral part of our daily lives, we often see that contemporary art also has adapted itself with the newborn technological changes in diversified dimensions. Machine Learning, which has recently become a remarkable development in science, has also begun to manifest itself in various artistic works. As accordingly, the artwork that has been created by the author of this article named "Variable" stands as an interactive work of art that embraces machine learning algorithms within its compositional structure. The artwork was extensively influenced by the sophisticated discourse of German philosopher Heideggerʼs book "Being and Time." Consequently, Being and Time text has been taught to a machine learning system, and thus the system has been able to automatically generate new original contents when the viewer interacts with the touch of a button. The generative system performs its Machine Learning Markov Chain operations with the implementation of a Python programming language-based library named Markovify. The work constantly redefines its own artistic title and statement with the use of a machine learning framework. In this article, the contribution of machine learning to the production of artworks is being examined while focusing on various implementations.

Researchers have been investigating on exploring different techniques to generate enhanced experiences for the users. In this article, the technological reality scenarios embodied within several Augmented Reality techniques are explored and a classification scheme is proposed in detail. Additionally, for the purposes of enhancing the cohesion of an augmented visual content to the actuality, an Augmented Reality software based on a segmentation using RGB-D camera system that handles the occlusion problem will also be explained and an enhancement method will be discussed.

Passing a skill (technē) learned from a master is carried across generations; therefore, a crafte... more Passing a skill (technē) learned from a master is carried across generations; therefore, a crafted object would also be considered a transitive element of a cultural heritance. Like the praxis of technology, skill is not an innate phenomenon but instead something artificial, made by humans. Crafted objects leave their marks in history by transferring tangible records of cultural heritage to the future, carrying traces of civilization of the period in which they exist. Investigating objects, which are produced in these terms as art and design objects within the diverse socio-cultural dimension, would take a critical place in clarifying many contemporary fundamental views. This article explores the meaning and the process of design, artisanship and cultural influences on these concepts through reciting the story of Çeşm-i Bülbül glass, which has been a significant object at the Ottoman banquets. Using this design object as an example, the article questions the meaning of design and the transformation process of 'becoming a meaningful object' through references from Heidegger's 'The Question Concerning Technology' and Borgmann's article 'Focal Things and Practices'.

Bu gelisimsel bozukluklar sosyal iletisimde yetersizlik, tekrarlayici ve sterotipik davranislara neden olmaktadir (APA, 2013). Alandaki arastirmalar OSB’li cocuklarin teknolojiye olan bu ilgisini ortaya koymustur. Bu ilgi gelecek vaat eden mudahale modellerinin olusturulmasinda imkan saglayabilir (Annaz et al., 2012; Klin et al., 2009; Fong et al., 2003). Bu calisma OSB’nin yol actigi sinirliliklara uygun urun yaratmak icin tasarimin nasil yapilmasi ve teknolojinin nasil kullanilmasi gerektigi arastirmasini kapsamaktadir. OSB’nin yuksek yayginlik oranlari goz onune alindiginda, bu arastirma bir risk degerlendirme cihazinin metodolojisini ve tasarimini sunmaktadir. Bu cihaz 3-4 yas araligindaki cocuklarin ilgisini cekmeyi ve testlerde dusuk puan alan cocuklari teshise yonlendirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Cihazin icindeki testler OSB’li cocuklarla tipik gelisim gosteren cocuklar arasindaki farkliliklari Zihin Kurami testleriyle saptamaya yonelik tasarlanmistir. Arastirma kapsaminda cihazin prototipinin iki boyutlu illustrasyonlari, arayuz tasarimlari ve dis kabuk tasarimi alandaki arastirma verilerine uygun olarak yapilmistir.

As computational systems have become an integral part of our daily lives, we often see that conte... more As computational systems have become an integral part of our daily lives, we often see that contemporary art also has adapted itself with the newborn technological changes in diversified dimensions. Machine Learning, which has recently become a remarkable development in science, has also begun to manifest itself in various artistic works. As accordingly, the artwork that has been created by the author of this article named "Variable" stands as an interactive work of art that embraces machine learning algorithms within its compositional structure. The artwork was extensively influenced by the sophisticated discourse of German philosopher Heideggerʼs book "Being and Time." Consequently, Being and Time text has been taught to a machine learning system, and thus the system has been able to automatically generate new original contents when the viewer interacts with the touch of a button. The generative system performs its Machine Learning Markov Chain operations with the implementation of a Python programming language-based library named Markovify. The work constantly redefines its own artistic title and statement with the use of a machine learning framework. In this article, the contribution of machine learning to the production of artworks is being examined while focusing on various implementations.

Researchers have been investigating on exploring different techniques to generate enhanced experiences for the users. In this article, the technological reality scenarios embodied within several Augmented Reality techniques are explored and a classification scheme is proposed in detail. Additionally, for the purposes of enhancing the cohesion of an augmented visual content to the actuality, an Augmented Reality software based on a segmentation using RGB-D camera system that handles the occlusion problem will also be explained and an enhancement method will be discussed.

Passing a skill (technē) learned from a master is carried across generations; therefore, a crafte... more Passing a skill (technē) learned from a master is carried across generations; therefore, a crafted object would also be considered a transitive element of a cultural heritance. Like the praxis of technology, skill is not an innate phenomenon but instead something artificial, made by humans. Crafted objects leave their marks in history by transferring tangible records of cultural heritage to the future, carrying traces of civilization of the period in which they exist. Investigating objects, which are produced in these terms as art and design objects within the diverse socio-cultural dimension, would take a critical place in clarifying many contemporary fundamental views. This article explores the meaning and the process of design, artisanship and cultural influences on these concepts through reciting the story of Çeşm-i Bülbül glass, which has been a significant object at the Ottoman banquets. Using this design object as an example, the article questions the meaning of design and the transformation process of 'becoming a meaningful object' through references from Heidegger's 'The Question Concerning Technology' and Borgmann's article 'Focal Things and Practices'.

Bu gelisimsel bozukluklar sosyal iletisimde yetersizlik, tekrarlayici ve sterotipik davranislara neden olmaktadir (APA, 2013). Alandaki arastirmalar OSB’li cocuklarin teknolojiye olan bu ilgisini ortaya koymustur. Bu ilgi gelecek vaat eden mudahale modellerinin olusturulmasinda imkan saglayabilir (Annaz et al., 2012; Klin et al., 2009; Fong et al., 2003). Bu calisma OSB’nin yol actigi sinirliliklara uygun urun yaratmak icin tasarimin nasil yapilmasi ve teknolojinin nasil kullanilmasi gerektigi arastirmasini kapsamaktadir. OSB’nin yuksek yayginlik oranlari goz onune alindiginda, bu arastirma bir risk degerlendirme cihazinin metodolojisini ve tasarimini sunmaktadir. Bu cihaz 3-4 yas araligindaki cocuklarin ilgisini cekmeyi ve testlerde dusuk puan alan cocuklari teshise yonlendirmeyi hedeflemektedir. It is with an increasing tendency that works of art produced with the help of technology (such as... more It is with an increasing tendency that works of art produced with the help of technology (such as video, sound, image, code, virtual reality, augmented reality, kinetic, digital and physical hybridities), or that require technology to work (such as hardware or software) are being included into various art collections. How these artworks would be carried into the future considering the rapidly advancing technology becomes a conundrum for all cultural institutions responsible for conserving cultural heritage. As a response to these needs, The Technological Arts Preservation Project has come into existence with the cooperation of Sakıp Sabancı Museum and Sabancı University. The project was initiated on May 23, 2019 when Osman Serhat Karaman, Sakıp Sabancı Museum digitalSSM Archive and Research Space Manager, invited Selçuk Artut, faculty member of Sabancı University Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Program to give a speech on the issue.

The Technological Arts Preservation Project aims at cooperation and information-sharing between professionals from various disciplines and areas of expertise. Scholars, media theorists, researchers, digital art conservators, curators and artists, software engineers, and computer scientists from significant institutions such as INA (Institut national de l'audiovisuel), Rhizome, Tate Modern, ZKM have contributed to the research project that gained international status. Within the scope of the project between November 15, 2019 and November 20, 2020, nine conferences and a workshop have been conducted on the preservation of software-based art, preservation of virtual reality, media archaeology, net art and web archiving. Our aim in organizing these conferences and workshops was to contribute to the international research in carrying both digital art and digital culture into the future, to discuss the results of new research, and to develop new and interdisciplinary modes of cooperation. We have reached a total number of 2000 participants through these events we have organized within the scope of the project, continuing our efforts online due to the pandemic, beginning from May 2020.

Presently, technological arts preservation is a common issue. Many problems such as erased digital photos, unrepairable, broken backup units, or records that would fall into oblivion due to discontinued media players now constitute a significant part of our daily lives. However, in terms of artworks, it is of vital importance that the matter should be handled with an interdisciplinary point of view within the context of preservation of cultural values. The book you have in front of you was prepared with great care and in awareness of the aforementioned responsibilities. Bringing together esteemed scholars, leading figures in arts and culture, artists as well as scientists, all expert names in their respective fields, this study includes comprehensive texts approaching the issue from different points of view. Consisting of three sections, the first part of the publication includes in-depth essays, the second part brings together content created based on the events we have conducted, and lastly, the third part chronicles answers of the artists to a questionnaire on the preservation of their work. We hope that this book will constitute a well-rounded source for those who have a sensibility for the very cultural values that make us human and how they may be carried into the future; we sincerely hope it will light the way for similar studies in the future.

Insofar as that’s true, dystopian fictions, art, images, sounds and dramas are no
longer just a warning, a distant uncanny wake-up call from the future, but might be one of the only ways to offer insights and strategies for our real and present survival, and hope for humanity (or even hope for all life on the planet?) through this dystopia. To perceive the resilience of the human spirit even in the midst of dire dystopian conditions is currently the most relevant challenge for the imagination.

İnsan ve teknolojinin birlikteliği ışığında ortaya çıkan yaratıcı unsurların
kullanımı teknolojide bugün gelinen noktaya bakıldığında geçmişe oranla baskın bir seviyede
güncel sanatın gelişiminde hissedilmektedir. Eser üretiminde yaşanılan insan ve teknoloji kapsamındaki karşılıklı etkileşimler neticesinde sanatçıların sahip oldukları üretim olanakları ve yaratıcı kapasiteleri tahayyül etmedikleri boyutlarda pekişmektedir.
Bu çalışmada kimliğini gün geçtikçe daha çok hissettiğimiz teknolojik etkileşimlerin sanat üretiminde kullanılan sıradan birer aparat olması kabulünden uzaklaşıp söz konusu yaratım sürecinin nasıl etkin bir bileşeni haline geldiklerinden bahsedilmektedir.
