By looking at Costa Rica's long histories of migration it is evident that xenophobic sentiments against Nicaraguans derive from long-lasting interconnections and migration movements between these two countries. This study demonstrates not only that much of nationalist and xenophobic discourses originate from prolonged historical arguments, but also that the global dimension of antimigration sentiments has to be considered. Using neo-institutionalist theory, in particular historical and sociological institutionalism, this paper explores how the history of migration in Costa Rica has contributed to the creation of Costa Rican nationalism. Furthermore, by combining past and present examples, namely the history of migrations between Nicaragua and Costa Rica and actions by nationalist groups on social media channels, this paper contributes to a historically centered analysis to one of the central issues of the 21st century.

This paper analyses selected topics of the Nicaraguan Revolution in the Austrian press, namely the occupation of the National Palace in Managua in 1978, the triumph of the revolution on July 19, 1979 and the visits by two members of the conservative Austrian People’s Party in Nicaragua in 1984. For this purpose, the paper uses articles and reports of the following Austrian newspapers: the Arbeiter-Zeitung, Die Presse, Kleine Zeitung, Kurier, Neue Kronen Zeitung, Salzburger Nachrichten and the Wiener Zeitung. Given that, the objective of the paper is to show discursive strategies in the Austrian newspapers concerning the Nicaraguan Revolution. The results of this research demonstrates that in general all newspapers lacked of sophisticated own research about Nicaragua and the region. Their dependency on the global news agencies led to false reports, misinterpretations and drew an unbalanced picture of the events and policies concerning Nicaragua and Central America.

The conference aims to facilitate an extensive engagement with the organized, state-led, and forced placement of refugees in both the past and present. The emphasis will be on a comparative perspective – synchronic as well as diachronic. One of the key aims of the conference is to make visible the parallels and differences between the practices and types of internment in different countries – while considering the specific historical contexts. Another important focus will be the nexus of relationships and agencies which constitute the camps in question as transitory spaces. The contributions consist of analyses of local phenomena or case studies as well as comparative engagements from an international or historical perspective

On 19 July 1979, a popular insurrection in Nicaragua led by guerrillas of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) overthrew the four-decade-long family dictatorship of the Somozas. In the following decade, Nicaraguan society underwent major changes, orchestrated by the FSLN government and its social, political and economic policies: alphabetization campaigns, land reform, the implementation of a mixed economy, the empowerment of Nicaraguan women, are just examples.
However, the revolution was not merely a local event in Nicaragua and Central America. Reactions came from all around the world: the US government, under the head of Ronald Reagan started counterinsurgency actions against the Nicaraguan government, which culminated in the so-called Contra War. By contrast, solidarity movements in the Global North and South tried to defend the progressive and emancipatory outcomes of the revolution and promoted a different image of the Nicaraguan Revolution, beyond Cold War narratives and binary affiliations, like “the Second Cuba” or “Nicarakuba”.
The revolution in Nicaragua became a central issue in the context of the Cold War. Scholars have only recently begun to embed it into a global framework. Studies – inside as well as outside Latin America – use to confine their analysis to a national sphere, barely touching upon local or transnational agencies.
In the light of the 40th anniversary of the revolution this conference seeks to reflect upon global, international, and transnational perspectives on the Sandinist Revolution by focusing on the circulation of ideas and actors within the region and in a global context. Therefore, this conference focuses on the global dimensions and political relevance of the Sandinista years (1979-1990) on Nicaragua.

From the Independence movements in the nineteenth century, to the formation of nation states in Latin America different marginalized groups, either politically, culturally or socio-economically, came into conflict with nation state projects. Here we establish the linkage of these different groups through their demand for the amplification of their rights and the reactions to these demands coming form the nation states and their methods of inclusion or exclusion.
The diversity of the groups and the different interpretations of politics and culture sometimes come into conflict with nation states. Especially in times of political transitions we observe, that nation states and their actors use different mechanisms to include or exclude marginalized groups.
This symposium aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue on the various state mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion and their reasons, justifications and aspirations in different political systems, including kingdoms, republics, dictatorships, and democracies.
