Kaha Mohamed Aden, an Italian writer of Somali origin, narrates her memories of Mogadishu, her ho... more Kaha Mohamed Aden, an Italian writer of Somali origin, narrates her memories of Mogadishu, her hometown, and reconstructs its story in Pavia, where she currently lives. The capital city of Somalia is divided into five main streets, with each corresponding to different historical periods. The ‘fourth road’ symbolizes the actuality of civil war, but also negates the preceding periods and makes it necessary to set our hopes on a ‘fifth street’. The Fourth Road: Mogadishu, Italy brings to our attention the issues of a land which shared a number of historical relationships with Italy in the past years; yet, this problematic aspect unfailingly tends to be overlooked by Italian mass-media. The history of the city of Mogadishu gives rise to many important fundamental questions on the history of Italy itself, given the assumption that we have a limited, and, to some degree, distorted historical view on this matter, not to mention the partial omission of the colonialism period.

In her imaginary trip backwards through her memories, she is accompanied by a young Italian man, who shares her same interest in exploring the relationship between identity and territory.
Ribka’s own personal story intersects powerfully with the stories of the Eritrean diaspora, which not only does it show the fault traces that colonialism has left behind in her country, but also demonstrates how the perception of immigration in Italy has been profoundly influenced by an apparent failure in the process of decolonization in Italian collective memory.
Aulò brings into question the concept of confine, not only in geographical, but also in cultural and identitarian terms.

The film offers a detailed account of Makaping’s journey of migration from Cameroon across the desert and the ocean, her arrival in Italy in 1982 following the tragic death of her partner, her success as a journalist and television host, and her more recent relocation and current teaching job in Mantua. I contributi nella raccolta abbracciano forme di produzione che vanno dalla letteratura alle arti visive, dal cinema alla performance teatrale, dai podcast alla musica rap, mentre tra le tematiche ricorrenti emergono dibattiti su identità, lingua, migrazione, memoria e cittadinanza. Questo volume è anche un invito a ripensare il lavoro creativo e quello accademico, in area umanistica, come intrinsecamente legati al dialogo e alla collaborazione. Ciascuna conversazione si concentra sull’Italia intesa come un catalizzatore di significati e di pratiche artistiche che si sviluppano in direzioni diverse e spesso inaspettate, piuttosto che come luogo geograficamente e culturalmente specifico, omogeneo e delimitato. Intersecando alcune delle linee teoriche tracciate da Jean Baudrillard, questo saggio si concentra proprio su quest'ultima opera, capolavoro della sperimentazione letteraria post-moderna in lingua inglese. "The Atrocity Exhibition" introduce alcuni dei temi cardine della successiva produzione dell'autore e ha il merito di spostare l'attenzione della produzione fantascientifica sul presente piuttosto che su un ipotetico futuro, mettendo in rilievo le profonde contraddizioni della società dei consumi.

This monograph is a meditation on how transnational migrations have influenced how the sense of p... more This monograph is a meditation on how transnational migrations have influenced how the sense of place and the politics of space are represented in literature and film about migration to, from and within Italy. It examines work produced in Italian and English, and it emphasizes how culture and national identity can be reconsidered in a more inclusive way within a world marked by increased mobility. The text is divided into three main sections – “Places”, “Spaces” and “Crossings” – each of which contains two chapters. Chapter 1 argues that bridges, as they are represented in literature, movies and paintings about and by Italian Americans, are often used as symbols to highlight the social improvement of this ethnic group. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s definition of heterotopia, Chapter 2 analyses the filmic and literary representation of Termini station. The representation of Termini either as an isolated place in the urban geography of Rome or as a place that mirrors the multicultural reality of present-day Italy highlights a tension between different ways of practicing the same space. Moving from the analysis of “Places” to the analysis of “Spaces”, Chapter 3 examines how Pannone’s ‘American Trilogy’ (1991-98) and shows how memory of the myth of America in Italy rethinks ‘Italian’ history with a trans-national lens. Chapter 4 analyzes how Juhmpa Lahiri’s In Other Words (2015) dislocates Italy both linguistically and spatially by de-linking the experience of Italy from its physical spaces. “Crossings” focuses on reflections about moving through a space, and how the ways in which a space is practiced or experienced changes our understanding of it. Chapter 5 analyzes the ways Giuliano Santoro’s Su due piedi. Camminando per un mese attraverso la Calabria (On My Two Feet: Walking for a Month in Calabria, 2012) and Wu Ming 2’s Il sentiero luminoso (The Bright Path, 2016) describe walking as an activity which allows one to recognize the social modifications of space, and to rethink the geographies of suburban areas in Italy. Chapter 6 discusses how Elia Moutamid’s Talien (2017) reimagines driving as an activity that links physical movement through spaces to reflections about transnational mobility and national belonging. Moving beyond the analysis of literature and film about the representation of spaces of migration, the coda argues that finding new ways of inscribing the memory of the past in the present can be a way of rethinking subjectivity, memory and belonging.

Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the way Muslim immigrants are narrated in scholarly research and news reports. Most importantly, this section urges us to consider minorities not just as ‘topics’ of cultural analysis, but as audiences and cultural agents. Following Shirin’s invitation to question prevailing modes of representations of immigrants, the volume continues with a dialogue between the co-authors and discusses how collaboration can be a way to avoid reproducing a ‘colonial model’ of knowledge production, in which the white male scholar takes as object of analysis the work of an African female writer. The last chapter also asserts that immigration literature cannot be approached with the same expectations and questions readers would have when reading ‘canonized’ texts. A new critical terminology is needed in order to understand the innovative linguistic choices and narrative forms that immigrant writers have invented in order to describe a reality that has lacked representation or which has frequently been misrepresented, especially in the discourse around the contemporary Muslim diaspora.

Gli undici capitoli (Discronie, Robot, Totalitarismi, Ecocritica, Follia, Religione, Terrorismo, Supereroi, Berlusconi, Europa, Postumano) analizzano ciascuno due o tre testi di riferimento, riflettendo sulla maniera in cui tali temi sono stati declinati all’inter- no della fantascienza italiana. Attraverso un viaggio culturale che spazia dal cinema alla letteratura, dal fumetto alle serie televisive, si vuole dare un’idea dell’originalità e della complessità di alcune esperienze culturali italiane, in un arco cronologico che va dagli ulti- mi anni del diciannovesimo secolo (L’anno 3000 di Paolo Mantegazza) alle più recenti uscite distopi- che (Furland di Tullio Avoledo e La festa nera di Violetta Bellocchio, ma anche la serie Il miracolo di Niccolò Ammaniti), passando per i film degli anni Sessanta e i romanzi post- apocalittici dei Set- tanta e Ottanta.
This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the pre... more This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the present day, focusing on how this genre helped shape notions of Otherness and Normalness. In particular, Italian Science Fiction draws upon critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and feminist studies to explore how migration, colonialism, multiculturalism, and racism have been represented in genre film and literature. Topics include the role of science fiction in constructing a national identity; the representation and self-representation of “alien” immigrants in Italy; the creation of internal “Others,” such as southerners and Roma; the intersections of gender and race discrimination; and Italian science fiction’s transnational dialogue with foreign science fiction. This book reveals that though it is arguably a minor genre in Italy, science fiction offers an innovative interpretive angle for rethinking Italian history and imagining future change in Italian society.

Italy colonized Somalia from the end of the 19th century to 1941, and held the territory by UN mandate from 1950 to 1960. Italy is also among the destination countries of the Somali diaspora, which increased in 1991 after civil war. Nonetheless, this colonial and postcolonial cultural encounter has often been neglected. Critically evaluating Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of ‘minor literature’, as well as drawing on postcolonial literary studies, The Somali Within analyses the processes of linguistic and cultural translation and self-translation, the political engagement with race, gender, class and religious discrimination, and the complex strategies of belonging and unbelonging at work in the literary works in Italian by authors of Somali origins. Brioni proposes that the ‘minor’ Somali Italian connection might offer a major insight into the transnational dimension of contemporary ‘Italian’ literature and ‘Somali’ culture.

Facendo riferimento alle proprie esperienze personali, Geneviève Makaping rovescia lo sguardo abituale dell’antropologia − quello che nell’etnografia coloniale è rivolto dai colonizzatori alle popolazioni indigene − osserva la maggioranza bianca dalla propria posizione di donna nera: «Guardo me stessa che guardo loro che da sempre mi guardano». Tale ribaltamento di prospettiva invita le persone bianche in Italia a non identificare sé stesse con la “normalità”
e a osservare che cosa voglia dire sentirsi costantemente “altri”. Traiettorie di sguardi è un libro originale e incisivo, che stimola una riflessione individuale e collettiva sulla questione del razzismo strutturale attraverso il racconto di accadimenti quotidiani. Chapter 4 analyzes how Juhmpa Lahiri’s In Other Words (2015) dislocates Italy both linguistically and spatially by de-linking the experience of Italy from its physical spaces. “Crossings” focuses on reflections about moving through a space, and how the ways in which a space is practiced or experienced changes our understanding of it. Chapter 5 analyzes the ways Giuliano Santoro’s Su due piedi. Camminando per un mese attraverso la Calabria (On My Two Feet: Walking for a Month in Calabria, 2012) and Wu Ming 2’s Il sentiero luminoso (The Bright Path, 2016) describe walking as an activity which allows one to recognize the social modifications of space, and to rethink the geographies of suburban areas in Italy. Chapter 6 discusses how Elia Moutamid’s Talien (2017) reimagines driving as an activity that links physical movement through spaces to reflections about transnational mobility and national belonging. Moving beyond the analysis of literature and film about the representation of spaces of migration, the coda argues that finding new ways of inscribing the memory of the past in the present can be a way of rethinking subjectivity, memory and belonging.

Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the way Muslim immigrants are narrated in scholarly research and news reports. Most importantly, this section urges us to consider minorities not just as ‘topics’ of cultural analysis, but as audiences and cultural agents. Following Shirin’s invitation to question prevailing modes of representations of immigrants, the volume continues with a dialogue between the co-authors and discusses how collaboration can be a way to avoid reproducing a ‘colonial model’ of knowledge production, in which the white male scholar takes as object of analysis the work of an African female writer. The last chapter also asserts that immigration literature cannot be approached with the same expectations and questions readers would have when reading ‘canonized’ texts. A new critical terminology is needed in order to understand the innovative linguistic choices and narrative forms that immigrant writers have invented in order to describe a reality that has lacked representation or which has frequently been misrepresented, especially in the discourse around the contemporary Muslim diaspora.

Gli undici capitoli (Discronie, Robot, Totalitarismi, Ecocritica, Follia, Religione, Terrorismo, Supereroi, Berlusconi, Europa, Postumano) analizzano ciascuno due o tre testi di riferimento, riflettendo sulla maniera in cui tali temi sono stati declinati all’inter- no della fantascienza italiana. This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the pre... more This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the present day, focusing on how this genre helped shape notions of Otherness and Normalness. In particular, Italian Science Fiction draws upon critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and feminist studies to explore how migration, colonialism, multiculturalism, and racism have been represented in genre film and literature. Topics include the role of science fiction in constructing a national identity; the representation and self-representation of “alien” immigrants in Italy; the creation of internal “Others,” such as southerners and Roma; the intersections of gender and race discrimination; and Italian science fiction’s transnational dialogue with foreign science fiction. This book reveals that though it is arguably a minor genre in Italy, science fiction offers an innovative interpretive angle for rethinking Italian history and imagining future change in Italian society.

Italy colonized Somalia from the end of the 19th century to 1941, and held the territory by UN mandate from 1950 to 1960. Italy is also among the destination countries of the Somali diaspora, which increased in 1991 after civil war. Nonetheless, this colonial and postcolonial cultural encounter has often been neglected. Critically evaluating Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of ‘minor literature’, as well as drawing on postcolonial literary studies, The Somali Within analyses the processes of linguistic and cultural translation and self-translation, the political engagement with race, gender, class and religious discrimination, and the complex strategies of belonging and unbelonging at work in the literary works in Italian by authors of Somali origins. Brioni proposes that the ‘minor’ Somali Italian connection might offer a major insight into the transnational dimension of contemporary ‘Italian’ literature and ‘Somali’ culture.

Facendo riferimento alle proprie esperienze personali, Geneviève Makaping rovescia lo sguardo abituale dell’antropologia − quello che nell’etnografia coloniale è rivolto dai colonizzatori alle popolazioni indigene − osserva la maggioranza bianca dalla propria posizione di donna nera: «Guardo me stessa che guardo loro che da sempre mi guardano». Tale ribaltamento di prospettiva invita le persone bianche in Italia a non identificare sé stesse con la “normalità”
e a osservare che cosa voglia dire sentirsi costantemente “altri”. Maka offers an account of Makaping’s journey of migration from Cameroon across the desert and the... more Maka offers an account of Makaping’s journey of migration from Cameroon across the desert and the ocean, her arrival in Italy in 1982 following the tragic death of her partner, her success as a journalist and television host, and her more recent relocation to Mantua. Maka focuses on questions of national belonging, and it reflects on how the perception of migration and race has changed since Makaping first came to Italy in the 1990s. This contribution includes a short article in which the protagonist, the writer and the director of the film reflect upon their collaboration. It also includes a video recording of the Q&A roundtable with Michela Ardizzoni and Mariagrazia de Luca from the American Association of Italian Studies 2023 conference.

L’articolo presenta un’esperienza distributiva seguita dall’autore del testo in prima persona: il caso del documentario indipendente Maka. Prodotto grazie ad un contributo accademico e alla collaborazione con due case di produzione italiane, Maka è stato presentato in numerosi festival internazionali, ricevendo diversi premi. La distribuzione ha coinvolto sia circuiti cinematografici tradizionali che piattaforme digitali indipendenti. Il film è stato proiettato in contesti accademici e associativi, in Italia e negli Stati Uniti, favorendo dibattiti su temi sociali e culturali. La partecipazione della protagonista, del regista, e dell’autore alle proiezioni ha giocato un ruolo chiave nel successo del film, evidenziando l’importanza dell’interazione diretta con il pubblico per la diffusione di opere indipendenti.

The article analyzes Beyond the Frame (Oltre i bordi, 2023), a film based on Simone Brioni's fort... more The article analyzes Beyond the Frame (Oltre i bordi, 2023), a film based on Simone Brioni's fortuitous discovery of a family archive: a box of photographs taken in Italian East Africa in the 1930s by a distant relative. Beyond the Frame discusses colonial photography and visuality, as well as the material legacies of that past, challenging the gaze through which they framed the subjective and collective idea of Africa in Italian society. The article is divided into two parts, each of which discusses colonial photography and how Beyond the Frame observes, interprets, and reflects on how the legacy of colonialism shapes our present. In the first part, Brioni traces the process that led to the construction of a narrative that interweaves personal reflections and collective history. In the second part, Gianmarco Mancosu draws upon Ann Laura Stoler's work to discuss how the colonial archive and the remains of empire fashion our present, with a particular emphasis on photography and on colonial traces in the Italian cityscape. The article shows how the film works with as well as against the archive: how it enacts a process of resignification, thus modifying the original meaning of colonial pictures.

Investigare le complesse relazioni intertestuali da cui emerge la fantascienza può permettere di comprendere come l'altro e l'altrove sono stati immaginati e rappresentati in Italia. This article aims to contribute to the debate about critical race studies in the Italian context ... more This article aims to contribute to the debate about critical race studies in the Italian context – and especially in the 1960s and the 1970s – by focusing on the construction and negotiation of race in the career of the prominent Italian meticcia singer, television host and producer Silvana Areggasc Savorelli, also known as Tanya from 1960 to 1966 and Lara Saint Paul from 1967 onwards. Through an examination of Savorelli’s career as a singer, television host and Italian diva, this article shows how the meanings of Savorelli’s meticcio body have been constantly adapting to the shifting perceptions of blackness in Italy and other Western societies. Lara Saint Paul’s media representations illustrate a change in the social construction of Italianness in terms of race from the early 1960s to the early 2000s.
Drawing on Michel Foucault's definition of heterotopia, the article analyses the filmic and liter... more Drawing on Michel Foucault's definition of heterotopia, the article analyses the filmic and literary representation of Stazione Termini, Rome's main train station. The Fascist architectural project, which mirrors an idea of the nation as homogeneous, monolithic, and white, begins to be challenged in the post-World War II representations of Termini which depict the station as the place where liminal and unexpected experiences can occur and accepted moral codes of behaviour are put into question. The article then focuses on the recent representation of Termini as a key place of contact with and among immigrants. While migration literature describes the station as a place of belonging, other contemporary representations of Termini depict it as a non-place, revealing the fear of a globalised world. The representation of Termini either as an isolated place in the urban geography of Rome or as a place that mirrors the multicultural reality of present-day Italy highlights a tension between different ways of practicing the same space.

This article analyses Gigliola Alvisi’s Ilaria Alpi: La ragazza che voleva raccontare l’inferno [Ilaria Alpi: The Young Woman Who Wanted to Narrate the Hell] (2014) and Giuseppe Catozzella’s Non dirmi che hai paura [Don’t Tell Me You Are Afraid] (2014), two novels that deal with two recent events in Somali and Italian history, the killing of the journalist Ilaria Alpi in Mogadishu in 1994 and the death of Samia Yosuf Omar while she was trying to reach the Italian shores from Libya by boat. Alvisi’s text is analysed in comparison with other fictional and journalistic representations of Ilaria Alpi, while Non dirmi che hai paura is examined through what Catozzella considers the two constitutive dimensions of the novel: documentation and identification. Drawing on Stefano Jossa’s reflections on the construction of literary heroes, the article challenges Alvisi’s and Catozzella’s claims that they represent ‘true stories’. The article also argues that the main characters of these literary works are portrayed as heroines and role models for the emancipation of Muslim women.
The article examines Gianfranco Pannone’s ‘American Trilogy’ – Piccola America. Gente del Nord a ... more The article examines Gianfranco Pannone’s ‘American Trilogy’ – Piccola America. Gente del Nord a Sud di Roma/‘Little America. People from the North to the South of Rome’ (1991), Lettere dall’America/‘Letters from America’ (1995) and L’America a Roma/‘America in Rome’ (1998) – showing how the trilogy employs the documentary genre not only as a way to inform the audience, but to question the way in which imagination shapes reality and vice versa. First, Lettere dall’America is examined in light of the topos of letter writing in other literary and cinematic works featuring the Italian emigration to the United States. Second, the article analyses how the migration from north-east Italy to the Pontine Marshes in central Italy is represented in Piccola America. Third, I discuss how L’America a Roma highlights the presence of southern migrants interpreting Mexicans in Italian westerns. Pannone uses documentaries to interrogate the fictional construction of America, and questions the view that narratives of migration are the objective reflection of ‘real’ experiences. Investigating the connection between nostalgia and the narration of history, this article also shows how the presence of a nostalgic vein in the trilogy is aimed at rethinking ‘Italian’ national history in a transnational dimension.

This article focuses on Enrico Brizzi’s L’inattesa piega degli eventi [The Unexpected Turn of Eve... more This article focuses on Enrico Brizzi’s L’inattesa piega degli eventi [The Unexpected Turn of Events, 2008], La nostra guerra [Our War, 2009], and Lorenzo Pellegrini e le donne [Lorenzo Pellegrini and the Women, 2012], a trilogy of alternative history novels that imagines what would have happened to the Italian empire if Italy had not allied with Germany during the Second World War. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s reflections on contemporaneity (2009), I analyze how this trilogy represents Fascism and its colonial legacy in relation to the history of politics and soccer in Italy. I also compare Brizzi’s trilogy to Mario Farneti’s alternative history novels—Occidente [Occident, 2001], Attacco all’Occidente [Attack on the Occident, 2005], and Nuovo impero di Occidente [New Empire of the Occident, 2006]—which propose a celebratory rather than mocking depiction of Fascism and its imperialist agenda. This reading is useful to understand Brizzi’s interpretation of the Italian political history after WWII and his attempt to decolonize the Italian imagination by using science fiction, a literary genre that was important for the promotion of the Italian colonial enterprise. The article also argues that Brizzi’s and Farneti’s different visions of Italy’s alternative past embody what John Foot has termed “Italy’s divided memory” and its constitutive ambivalence regarding the legacy of Fascism (2009).
This article analyses the multiple definition of “home” in Kaha Mohamed Aden’s Fra-intendimenti. ... more This article analyses the multiple definition of “home” in Kaha Mohamed Aden’s Fra-intendimenti. On the one hand, Kaha identifies Somalia during the period of its struggle for political independence and female emancipation from the 1960s to the mid-1970s as her “home.” This affective space was destroyed by the ongoing civil war and survives only in memory. On the other hand, she identifies her home in Italy as a place where immigrants of African origins, although coming from a former Italian colony like Somalia, cannot find political or social recognition.
In particular, this article analyses the short story “Apriti sesamo,” which employs an essentialist metaphor such as the comparison between hospitality in one person’s home to the ‘hosting’ of a national country. This image simultaneously recalls and challenges some passages from Samuel Huntington’s theory of the clash of civilisations (1996), which portrays an inherent conflict between Islam and Western culture. The article argues that ‘Apriti sesamo’ ironically criticises the clear-cut binary opposition between Western culture and Islam, but also challenges Edward Said’s assumption that the political reappropriation of stigmatised labels might be a discourse “trapped inside itself.” Kaha’s metaphorical use of essentialist categories allows her narrative both to reach a broader audience of Italian readers and to challenge the dominant derogatory representation of Muslim immigrants. In this sense, this text is a perfect example of tactical essentialism, which Claire Colebrook describes as being in opposition to the strategic or metonymic use of cultural categories (2001). In particular, the analysis focuses on the linguistic choice of a colloquial and direct language, with little or no insertion of Somali words, which contests the cultural incompatibility of immigrants and their children in the Italian context and is beneficial to affirming the rights of minorities. Kaha’s use of essentialist labels shows her unbelonging to the dominant white and Catholic national identity and highlights her critical but internal position with respect to Italian society in terms of race, gender and religion.

Autore di rottura, ha sovvertito i canoni della fantascienza tradizionale nei primi anni '60. Il suo testo "Quale la strada per lo spazio interiore?" del 1962 viene adottato dalla New Wave, un gruppo di autori inglesi che ha rinnovato profondamente il genere, come manifesto di intenti. Non ci sono alieni né astronavi nei racconti e romanzi di Ballard. "Le trasformazioni più importanti" -afferma Ballard -"che avverranno nell'immediato futuro non avverranno sulla Luna o su Marte, ma sulla Terra. E' lo spazio interno -e non quello esterno -che necessita di essere esplorato. L'unico pianeta veramente straniero è la Terra." gigantesco telequiz, che banalizzi tutto". Cosa che si è puntualmente avverata. Nell'ultima parte del saggio, Simone Brioni e Maria Vaccarella fanno un'incursione sui "non luoghi nell'opera di James Graham Ballard." Luoghi che "si configurano come trasposizioni spaziali delle problematiche sociali dell'era postmoderna, poiché la loro natura effimera promuove un'individualità solitaria e alienata". Per fare questo, gli autori si rifanno a opere della seconda parte della carriera artistica di Ballard, ad eccezione di High rise (Il condominio), 1975. Millennium People (2004, Running wild (Un gioco da bambini) 1988, Cocaine nights (1996) e Super Cannes (2000 sono romanzi in cui Ballard lascia la sua fantascienza per addentrarsi in città fortezze, enclave, condomini fortificati e autosufficienti dove la gente cura i propri malesseri con massicce dosi di psicopatologia. E' il ceto medio, la borghesia che comincia le rivoluzioni per mantenere i privilegi ottenuti. Questo saggio è utilissimo sia per chi già conosce Ballard ma soprattutto per chi volesse farsi una prima idea sulle potenzialità eversive di questo autore che ha affermato: "Più invecchio e più divento di sinistra". Il suo testamento letterario, Regno a venire, mette in guardia tutti noi da come il consumismo, le sue nuove cattedrali (i centri commerciali), la ricerca ossessiva del benessere, i club di tifosi che marciano per le strade con gli emblemi della propria squadra possano facilmente trasformarsi in un non troppo strisciante fascismo. E con i tempi che corrono non mi sembra poco.
In un articolo del 2014, "Towards a Trans-national Turn in Italian Studies", pubblicato sull'infl... more In un articolo del 2014, "Towards a Trans-national Turn in Italian Studies", pubblicato sull'influente rivista Italian Studies, Emma Bond segnalava una svolta transnazionale nello studio delle letterature nazionali, discutendo alcuni degli studi più importanti realizzati sull'argomento in Italia o nell'ambito dell'Italianistica. Tale svolta, secondo l'autrice, sarebbe stata necessaria per meglio comprendere e rappresentare le identità fluide e transnazionali e le appartenenze multiple che caratterizzano il mondo globalizzato in cui viviamo. In particolare, Bond identificava nella corporeità uno spazio privilegiato per comprendere tali traiettorie transnazionali. Due anni dopo l'uscita di questo articolo è stata inaugurata la collana di testi "Transnational Italian Cultures" a cura di Bond e Derek Duncan, pubblicata da Liverpool University Press, il cui obiettivo è di pubblicare-com'è spiegato sul sito dell'editore-"the best research in the expanding field of postcolonial, global and transnational Italian studies" e di ridefinire "what constitutes Italian culture today". La sua più recente monografia, Migrant Writers and Urban Space in Italy: Proximities and Affect in Literature and Film (2017), è stata scritta a distanza di otto anni dal suo primo saggio, Mediterranean Crossroads: Migration Literature in Italy (1999). In questo saggio, Parati metteva in luce la complessità di alcune opere autobiografiche scritte da autori immigrati in Italia e la loro capacità di contrastare la narrazione dell'immigrazione presente nei media. A differenza di Mediterranean Crossroads, Migrant Writers and Urban Space in Italy non analizza le opere di artisti emergenti, ma una presenza artistica consolidata nell'Italia contemporanea.

My paper analyses to what extent Deleuze and Guattari's definition of the three main features of ... more My paper analyses to what extent Deleuze and Guattari's definition of the three main features of 'minor literature' – namely 'the deterritorialization of language, the connection of the individual to a political immediacy, and the collective assemblage of enunciation' – are relevant in analyzing literature by authors of Somali origins in Italian. Because of Deleuze and Guattari's abstract reference to gender and race issues and their vague concern for the geographical, linguistic and cultural specificities of literatures by minor authors, I will argue that 'minor literature' should not be seen as a rigid framework to be applied in interpreting a specific case study, although its theoretical flexibility might be useful when investigating a literature that strongly refuse categorization. In particular, Deleuze and Guattari's reference to 'minor' 'literature as a literature 'in becoming' helps to identify the position of Somali Italian literature in a transnational context, proposing some changes in how 'Italian' literature has been conceptualized so far.

Transnational Cultures promotes inquiry into the cultural productions characterized by the vertical and lateral exchanges of ideas, objects and linguistic practices across the globe with a particular emphasis on South–South exchanges, minor transnational relations and Indigenous experiences. The series strives to offer a renewed understanding of minor and minority expressions and articulations of transnational experiences that often escape national and global discourses. With the growth of diasporic communities, migratory crossings and virtual exchange, cultural productions beyond, across and traversing national borders have become a growing focus of scholarship within historical, contemporary and comparative contexts. The series investigates how a transnational lens might transform existing understandings of cultural exchange, belonging, and identity formation in any period or location.
This series addresses a range of questions, including but not limited to the following: What broader flows of knowledge, capital and power mark pre-modern, modern and contemporary cultural productions and identity formations? How do marginal experiences trouble existing narratives of the nation-state and global–local paradigms? What kinds of creolization of cultures and experiences evolve in the processes of transnationalism? How do transnational flows in the Global South, and among marginal or minority communities, facilitate sites of articulation outside normative discourses?
Proposals for monographs and edited collections from international scholars are welcome. The series is interdisciplinary in scope and welcomes research on literature, film, new media, visual culture and beyond. All proposals and manuscripts will be subjected to rigorous peer review. The main language of publication is English.

This five-part dialogue argues that despite its common positioning as a ‘minor’ player in Italian... more This five-part dialogue argues that despite its common positioning as a ‘minor’ player in Italian letters, Somali Italian literature has prompted a major shift in the Italian cultural field by bringing to light forgotten pages of Italian history. This chapter presents key issues in Shirin’s career which represents some aspects of Somali Italian authors’ struggles to be heard and read, including the processes of translation and self-translation, and the challenges to be published. The chapter argues that collaborative writing can challenge the ‘minor’ role that immigrant authors occupy in the present cultural industry and their marginalisation in academic discussions concerning them.

This chapter shows how science fiction has reflected on the rise of xenophobic and independentist... more This chapter shows how science fiction has reflected on the rise of xenophobic and independentist factions in the Northeast of Italy. The analysis focuses on Gabriele Salvatores’s movie Nirvana (1997), which depicts the tensions between an imaginary Northern Conglomerate and the rest of the world; Tullio Avoledo’s dystopic novel about the memory of the Holocaust, La ragazza di Vajont (2008); and Francesco Patierno’s movie Cose dell’altro mondo (2011), an Italian remake of Sergio Arau’s movie A Day Without a Mexican (2004), that imagines what would happen if all migrants in Italy disappeared, and which is set in a small village in the Veneto region. Science fiction leads us to uncover stories of domination and discrimination and challenges the presumed geographical and historical stability of national sovereignty.

The book’s afterword rejects the perception of Italian science fiction as an imitative genre of U... more The book’s afterword rejects the perception of Italian science fiction as an imitative genre of US science fiction, and suggests that Italian science fiction is able to adapt and subvert foreign models as much as these foreign models had influence in Italy. The ways in which Italian movies and literary works modify the model text are active processes that can be seen in terms of resistance and collaboration with the dominant cultural hegemony. While science fiction in Italy has too often been perceived as a genre divorced from the identity politics narrated in coeval realist literature, this section argues that the science fiction genre is not isolated from social and political debates.

Analyzing Stefano Tamburini’s comic book RanXerox (1978–97); Michele Medda, Antonio Serra, and Be... more Analyzing Stefano Tamburini’s comic book RanXerox (1978–97); Michele Medda, Antonio Serra, and Bepi Vigna’s comic book Nathan Never (1991); and literature written by migrant authors, such as Amor Dekhis, Miguel Angel Garcia, and Christiana de Caldas Brito, this chapter explores the representation of racial purity and hybridity in Italian dystopic narratives from the 1980s to the 2000s. The chapter traces the shift from dystopic narratives of the 1980s and 1990s—which represented identitarian and social alienation caused by modern technology and the capitalist mode of production—to the dystopic narratives of the early 2000s, which have focused on the effects of increasing racism and xenophobia.

Texts that imagined Italy’s future as a unified country, and warned of its enemies, aided in consolidating public opinion. Novels like Paolo Mantegazza’s L’anno 3000: Sogno (1897), Emilio Salgari’s La montagna d’oro (1901), and Enrico Novelli (Yambo)’s Gli esploratori dell’infinito (1907), featured exoticized Others in order to construct a cohesive national identity by contrast, and to justify colonial conquests. Explorers became the Italian literary heroes of the nineteenth century, making the terms “discovery” and “conquest” synonymous, thereby erasing the existence of indigenous people.

The analysis presents collaboration as a decolonial practice, which can produce unconventional outcomes such as a hybrid text like Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora. This article aims to contribute to the debate about critical race studies in the Italian context-... more This article aims to contribute to the debate about critical race studies in the Italian context-and especially in the 1960s and the 1970s-by focusing on the construction and negotiation of race in the career of the prominent Italian meticcio singer, television host and producer Silvana Areggasc Savorelli, also known as Tanya from 1960 to 1966 and Lara Saint Paul from 1967 onwards. Through an examination of Savorelli's career as a singer, television host and Italian diva, this article shows how the meanings of Savorelli's meticcio body have been constantly adapting to the shifting perceptions of blackness in Italy and other Western societies. Lara Saint Paul's media representations illustrate a change in the social construction of Italianness in terms of race from the early 1960s to the early 2000s.

Since the early stages of their careers, Futurists employed books as a privileged means of experimentation both in terms of graphics and contents. Authors like Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Francesco Cangiullo, Carlo Carrà, Fortunato Depero and Ardengo Soffici explored the visual, graphic and onomatopoeic possibilities of written words in parolibere. These authors put into practice a typographic revolution, which aimed to subvert the usual order within a page, through the use of different characters and colours. In particular, Marinetti announced the birth of this peculiar expressive form in his manifests and set the grounds for a renewal of written expression.

An inclusive re-evaluation of Italian symbols acknowledging multiple perspectives.
How is it possible to re-evaluate Italian symbols in a more inclusive way that acknowledge the multiple, diasporic and postcolonial perspectives through which Italian culture is created, discussed, appropriated, and kept alive?
In an attempt to give an answer to this question, Dr Simone Brioni's lecture focused on examples of three collaborative research experiences and artistic endeavours: a reading of how Somali diasporic writers have discussed Dante’s Commedia; a re-visitation of Mantegna’s depiction of black people in his Renaissance paintings; and a closer look at questions of memory, belonging and family heritage in colonial photography.
Interrogating his own work as a scholar and a documentary maker, Dr Brioni's lecture argued that collaboration offers new perspectives which allow us to rethink how we study ‘Italian’ culture.
Dr Simone Brioni is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Stony Brook University and affiliated faculty in the Departments of Africana Studies and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. He specialises in the literary and cinematographic representation and self-representation of migrants with a particular emphasis on contemporary Italian culture. He co-authored the films Beyond the Frame (2022, with Matteo Sandrini) and Maka (2022, with Elia Moutamid).
Italian has been taught at this university since 1881 and today Italian Studies is housed within the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC). We are a small and friendly community of academic and teaching staff whose research and teaching interests cover contemporary fiction, linguistics, cultural history, film and transcultural studies.
These wonderful lectures have been made possible by alumna and colleague, the late Professor Lucrezia Zaina, who studied French and Italian at the University of Liverpool from 1939-1947. She then became a lecturer in those departments and later Head of Italian from 1964 to 1988. Professor Zaina sadly passed away in 2008 having bequeathed a generous legacy to the University.

Through the literary and historiographical works written by Ethiopian intellectual Käbbädä Mikael... more Through the literary and historiographical works written by Ethiopian intellectual Käbbädä Mikael in the 1940s and 1950s, this lecture problematizes the concept of the ‘world’ in global intellectual history. After the end of the Italian occupation in 1941, Ethiopia’s international position was uncertain. Ethiopian intellectuals started testing the viability of different cultural and political worldscapes, and Käbbädä Mikael exemplifies the ways in which the generation that came to prominence after 1941 experimented with different geographies of belonging. Käbbädä’s worldmaking attempted to break into the Eurocentric exclusivity of hegemonic narratives of modernity, jostling for recognition within modernization theory but also, at the same time, activating polycentric connections along oblique South-South networks.

Families dispersed for social or political reasons to different parts of the globe were like sate... more Families dispersed for social or political reasons to different parts of the globe were like satellites or capsules of culture, who then became the main custodians of a cultural preservation: where time more or less stood still. Settlers to North-West Victoria, Australia from regional Calabria, Italy immersed themselves in the familiar and clung to the traditions and customs of their homeland. By clinging to their culture, it was a way of preserving it. Artist Luci Callipari-Marcuzzo actively engages with her familial and feminine history. An integral part of her practice-led research is the self-transformation into an imagined version of her Calabrian grandmothers, whereby she makes artefacts utilising traditional methods of women’s work.

Classes will cover different geopolitical areas and will, at times, require students to do short readings for the seminar activities in the second part of the class. It does not require prior knowledge of the topic, but it is necessary to have a good working knowledge of English (written and spoken).

Maka offers a poignant exploration of displacement, identity, and belonging by presenting Geneviè... more Maka offers a poignant exploration of displacement, identity, and belonging by presenting Geneviève Makaping's life in Italy and perilous migration journey. By sharing Makaping's experience as the first Black news editor in Italy, Maka is about a Black woman reclaiming the narrative and speaking out against the media representation of immigrants. Synopsis Maka is a documentary about Geneviève Makaping, a Cameroonian-Italian anthropologist, writer and the first Black woman to be named the director of a newspaper in Italy. The film offers a detailed account of Makaping's journey of migration from Cameroon across the desert and the ocean, her arrival in Italy in 1982 following the tragic death of her partner, her success as a journalist and television host, and her more recent relocation and current teaching job in Mantua. Maka explores how the perception of migration and race has changed since Makaping first came to Italy in the 1990s. Maka is a bold statement about what it means to be "other," to be a woman, and particularly a Black woman, in Italy.
