Focusing mainly on the cases of Chile and Uruguay, Ravecca employs different strands of critical theory to challenge the mainstream narrative about the development of the discipline in the region, emphasizing its ideological aspects and demonstrating how the discipline itself has been shaped by power relations. Ravecca metaphorically charts the (non-linear) transit from “cold” to “warm” to “hot” intellectual temperatures to illustrate his—alternative—narrative. Beginning with a detailed quantitative study of three regional academic journals, moving to the analysis of the role of subjectivity (and political trauma) in academia and its discourse in relation to the dictatorships in Chile and Uruguay, and arriving finally at an intimate meditation on the experience of being a queer scholar in the Latin American academy of the 21st century, Ravecca guides his readers through differing explorations, languages, and methods.

Mientras escribimos estas líneas, la CBC emite programas sobre cómo sería una invasión estadounid... more Mientras escribimos estas líneas, la CBC emite programas sobre cómo sería una invasión estadounidense a Canadá y sobre si ésta se convertirá, o no, en el estado 51, tal como lo desea-o manifiesta desear-Donald Trump. Los canadienses están viviendo una pesadilla de tintes surrealistas que no solamente lacera su autoestima nacional, sino que también pone en tela de juicio las narrativas que el mainstream académico y periodístico ha promovido sobre el país durante décadas. Canadá-ni tan a salvo ni tan diferente a esos países que se nombran con pena en los noticieros. Este trastocamiento del sentido de realidad tiene, sin dudas, repercusiones profundas. Al mismo tiempo-ahora mismo-en la otra punta de las Américas, el presidente de Argentina, el libertario Javier Milei, se ve sumido en un escándalo internacional por promover una criptomoneda utilizada en una estafa de proporciones. Para colmo, circuló una versión sin editar de la entrevista en que Milei explica su versión de la situación donde queda en evidencia la connivencia entre el gobierno y el periodista Jonatan Viale. Resulta difícil evitar pensar que este episodio revela un modus operandi que va mucho más allá del periodista en cuestión.

This essay critically explores the landscape of political theory through our transient experience... more This essay critically explores the landscape of political theory through our transient experiences as theorists who were raised and educated in Latin America and obtained PhD degrees from North American universities. We argue that our transiting through geographies, styles of thinking, and modes of writing—what we call in-betweenness—can distinctly nurture democratic conversations and theorizing. Yet these opportunities tend to be hijacked by a series of intersecting exclusions. With this term, we refer to the silencing and invisibilization that Latin American theorists experience in addition to the marginalization of political theory within political science everywhere. In Global North conversations, our contributions are consistently diminished by distorted imaginaries and narratives about Latin America, with a loss for everyone. The analysis draws on current efforts to question power dynamics within political theory and political science. With these critiques, we share the conviction that a more open field would benefit us all. Given that the world faces challenges of existential proportions, including everyone in the conversation as equals, we contend, constitutes a fundamental move toward collective renewal and even survival.

This article is an invitation to think about the far-right beyond self-righteousness. The authors... more This article is an invitation to think about the far-right beyond self-righteousness. The authors challenge the conventional perception of the far-right as wholly separate from mainstream politics and society, arguing instead that there is substantial overlap, particularly in terms of patriarchy, racism, and neoliberalism. Nonetheless, the right does innovate and evolve, and it is key to make sense of these shifts. The article's second section argues that some of the most cutting-edge forms of right-wing activism are currently unfolding in the Global South. Argentinian President Javier Milei's leadership is a noteworthy case as it blends right-wing intersectionality (Ravecca et al., 2022a; 2022b), a conservative version of the critique of elite capture (O. Táíwò, 2022), and the theological dimension of neoliberalism (Kotsko, 2018). The conclusion comes back to the idea that, at multiple significant levels, there is no pure exteriority between the far-right and the rest of us. Even Milei's 'new' rhetoric radicalizes tendencies that were already present in the main corridors of politics and academia.

After tracing the appearance of innocence in various strands of contemporary thought, we turn to how it shields individuals and groups from facing the depth of our own participation in oppression. This evasion of responsibility works in our perspective as a hindrance to understanding power and engaging with others ethically. The essay also examines how the reductionist and authoritarian dimensions of innocence merge with the neoliberal uptake of progressive politics in university and activist settings. We are interested in how academics and activists are rewarded for cultivating their innocent-selves through discursive and material interventions that leave power relations untouched. It is not merely monetary or status rewards that perpetuate this, but the crisis produced by our implication in the very violence we reject. Working with and through the mobility of agency, power, abuse, and justice, we explore what is at stake in shedding our attachments to innocence in the hope of a different sort of encounter-one that proceeds from the recognition that innocence is not a precondition for our engagement in political life.

Despite the contributions of intersectional approaches, the academic and political left is challe... more Despite the contributions of intersectional approaches, the academic and political left is challenged by competing interests in class, gender, race, and other axes of inequality and power. The disconnect between research on political economy, on the one hand, and on culture and subjectivity, on the other, is stark in Latin American studies. In contrast, an emerging feature of the global radical right is the gathering of these dimensions in simultaneous attacks to different strands of progressive politics and scholarship. The enemy is defined in economic and cultural terms: thus, feminism is frequently referred to as an extension of communism while Marxism is understood as part of cultural conspiracies to destroy healthy families and normal lifestyles. We call this phenomenon right-wing intersectionality (RWI). Through a mixed-methods approach, the article explores how RWI manifests in 20 leading influencers, activists, and politicians. The research included the systematic content analysis of 30,858 tweets.

Este artículo explora las implicaciones para la academia y la política de lo que llamamos apegos a la inocencia. Luego de rastrear las formas en que la inocencia aparece en diferentes corrientes del pensamiento contemporáneo, nos concentramos en cómo ella protege a individuos y grupos de confrontar nuestra profunda participación en la opresión. Esta evasión de la responsabilidad funciona, en nuestra perspectiva, como un obstáculo para comprender el poder e interactuar éticamente. El artículo también examina cómo las dimensiones reduccionistas y autoritarias de la inocencia se fusionan con la apropiación neoliberal de la política progresista en la academia y el activismo. Nos interesan los modos en que académicos y activistas son recompensados por cultivar un yo-inocente a través de intervenciones discursivas y materiales que mantienen intocadas las relaciones de poder. No son las recompensas meramente monetarias o de estatus las que perpetúan esto, sino la crisis que produce nuestra implicación personal y colectiva en la violencia que supuestamente rechazamos. Trabajando con y a través del carácter móvil de la agencia, el poder, el abuso y la justicia, exploramos qué está en juego a la hora de poder, o no, superar los apegos a la inocencia. Hacemos esto con la esperanza de delinear otro tipo de encuentro: uno que procede del reconocimiento de que la inocencia no es una condición para nuestra participación en la vida política. Baldosas por la memoria are memorial paving stones handcrafted by loosely networked activists. Pr... more Baldosas por la memoria are memorial paving stones handcrafted by loosely networked activists. Produced continuously from 2006 to an informally established protocol, they memorialize "the disappeared" and others murdered by the state terrorism of the Argentinian dictatorship (1976-1983). As a synecdoche of the "down and dirty" everyday pavements, they function as a metonym for democratic struggle and popular sovereignty. Aesthetically, they work against the "forgetting" and kitschification to which conventional memorials become subject. Through remediation into books and a DVD documentary, they participate in controversies within the international politics of human rights. Using a "material turn" within visual analysis, yet distinct from the "new materialism," this article explains how they function within familiar genres of memorialization but in wholly novel ways. Baldosas create ethical complexity and moral ambiguity by troubling collective memory. Thus, we examine their relation to guilt, complicity, trauma, and affect. Les Baldosas por la memoria sont des pavés commémoratifs faits main par des activistes plus ou moins en réseau. Produits continuellement depuis 2006 selon un protocole établi non officiel, ils commémorent les « disparus » et autres personnes assassinées par le terrorisme d'État de la dictature argentine établie entre 1976 et 1983. Synecdoque des pavés « sales et affaissés » du quotidien, ils sont tels une métonymie de la lutte démocratique et de la souveraineté populaire. Esthétiquement, ils vont à l'encontre de « l'oubli » et de la « kitchification » qui finissent par affecter les mémoriaux conventionnels. De par leur remédiatisation dans des livres et un documentaire en DVD, ils participent aux controverses intervenant en politique internationale des droits de l'Homme. Cet article introduit une « touche matérielle » mais distincte du « nouveau matérialisme » dans son analyse visuelle pour expliquer comment ces pavés jouent un rôle dans des genres familiers de commémoration, mais de façons tout à fait inédites. El artículo interviene en la conversación internacional sobre las posibilidades y los límites de ... more El artículo interviene en la conversación internacional sobre las posibilidades y los límites de la escritura narrativa en relaciones internacionales y ciencia política. Concretamente, propone una comparación teórica entre «escritura fortaleza» y «voz narrativa». La primera corresponde al estilo de pensamiento y de escritura dominante en estas disciplinas. En cambio, la voz narrativa constituye una oportunidad para problematizar y aflojar los rasgos más constrictores de aquella. El artículo no propone la adopción generalizada de la escritura narrativa-proyecto inviable e, incluso, indeseable-sino que sugiere que esta última, cuando es exitosa, expande posibilidades para la investigación y la reflexión, habilitando modos menos «bélicos» de construir conocimiento. Las narrativas abren así un espacio de respiración en la academia. Sin embargo, como cualquier forma de trabajo intelectual, la escritura narrativa conlleva riesgos. En lugar de volver sobre los cuestionamientos típicos, ya extensamente contestados en la literatura, el trabajo inicia la exploración de tres riesgos que amenazan con volver a las narrativas otro tipo de escritura fortaleza: el apego a la inocencia, el apego al trauma y la cancelación moralizante de la complejidad.

Concretely, the article focuses on PS' institutional birth and early period (1980s and 1990s) and shows how broader political and ideological transformations had a significant impact on its discourse on Uruguayan democracy. Three components of such discourse are unpacked: The embrace of liberalism, the rejection of Marxism, and the uncritical engagement with the local political system, particularly the 'traditional parties.' This article explores the recent expansion of narrative approaches in International Relations (IR... more This article explores the recent expansion of narrative approaches in International Relations (IR) and the conceptual and political possibilities it brings about. Instead of suggesting a set of criteria through which we should evaluate narrative texts, we investigate what they are already doing in IR scholarship. We show that the space narrative writing delineates through the encounter between text and reader/reading potentiates critique and engages complexity in ways that are often not available in other forms of IR scholarship. Concretely, we examine themes around openness, contradiction, ambiguity, fracture, surprise, and the ungovernable aspects of social and scholarly life.

This auto-ethnography assembles ‘story’ and ‘theory’ to explore the politics of Political Science... more This auto-ethnography assembles ‘story’ and ‘theory’ to explore the politics of Political Science. The narration situates this academic discipline as a human activity, unpacking its interconnectedness vis-à-vis other realms of experience: the ‘individual’ level, the family structure and the Nation State. Power and knowledge circulate through all of these spaces without observing the borders that scholarship traces between them. Self-reflection is a transformative practice needed by both people and academia. Indeed, introspection needs to also disregard boundaries in order to grasp the complexity of personal-and-social-life. Introspection is extrospection and, therefore, it is a political exercise –as political as Political Science.

Español: Este texto carece de género o posee un género difícilmente identificable, nombrable. Posee elementos etnográficos enmarcados en un ejercicio autobiográfico (de ahí la noción de “auto-etnografía”). Mi experiencia vivida es ensamblada en tres registros (la estructura individual, familiar y nacional) y narrada en términos de su intersección con la historia de la ciencia política nacional (que, a su vez, es insertada en el itinerario disciplinar global). La teoría política permea la forma de contar la historia. Se trata, pues de análisis político en clave de introspección disciplinar auto-etno-biográfica. Y se lee como lo que es: una historia.

Baldosas por la memoria are memorial paving stones handcrafted by loosely networked activists. Pr... more Baldosas por la memoria are memorial paving stones handcrafted by loosely networked activists. Produced continuously from 2006 to an informally established protocol, they memorialize "the disappeared" and others murdered by the state terrorism of the Argentinian dictatorship (1976-1983). As a synecdoche of the "down and dirty" everyday pavements, they function as a metonym for democratic struggle and popular sovereignty. Aesthetically, they work against the "forgetting" and kitschification to which conventional memorials become subject. Through remediation into books and a DVD documentary, they participate in controversies within the international politics of human rights. Using a "material turn" within visual analysis, yet distinct from the "new materialism," this article explains how they function within familiar genres of memorialization but in wholly novel ways. Baldosas create ethical complexity and moral ambiguity by troubling collective memory. Thus, we examine their relation to guilt, complicity, trauma, and affect. Les Baldosas por la memoria sont des pavés commémoratifs faits main par des activistes plus ou moins en réseau. Produits continuellement depuis 2006 selon un protocole établi non officiel, ils commémorent les « disparus » et autres personnes assassinées par le terrorisme d'État de la dictature argentine établie entre 1976 et 1983. Synecdoque des pavés « sales et affaissés » du quotidien, ils sont tels une métonymie de la lutte démocratique et de la souveraineté populaire. Esthétiquement, ils vont à l'encontre de « l'oubli » et de la « kitchification » qui finissent par affecter les mémoriaux conventionnels. De par leur remédiatisation dans des livres et un documentaire en DVD, ils participent aux controverses intervenant en politique internationale des droits de l'Homme. Cet article introduit une « touche matérielle » mais distincte du « nouveau matérialisme » dans son analyse visuelle pour expliquer comment ces pavés jouent un rôle dans des genres familiers de commémoration, mais de façons tout à fait inédites. El artículo interviene en la conversación internacional sobre las posibilidades y los límites de ... more El artículo interviene en la conversación internacional sobre las posibilidades y los límites de la escritura narrativa en relaciones internacionales y ciencia política. Concretamente, propone una comparación teórica entre «escritura fortaleza» y «voz narrativa». La primera corresponde al estilo de pensamiento y de escritura dominante en estas disciplinas. En cambio, la voz narrativa constituye una oportunidad para problematizar y aflojar los rasgos más constrictores de aquella. El artículo no propone la adopción generalizada de la escritura narrativa-proyecto inviable e, incluso, indeseable-sino que sugiere que esta última, cuando es exitosa, expande posibilidades para la investigación y la reflexión, habilitando modos menos «bélicos» de construir conocimiento. Las narrativas abren así un espacio de respiración en la academia. Sin embargo, como cualquier forma de trabajo intelectual, la escritura narrativa conlleva riesgos. En lugar de volver sobre los cuestionamientos típicos, ya extensamente contestados en la literatura, el trabajo inicia la exploración de tres riesgos que amenazan con volver a las narrativas otro tipo de escritura fortaleza: el apego a la inocencia, el apego al trauma y la cancelación moralizante de la complejidad.

Concretely, the article focuses on PS' institutional birth and early period (1980s and 1990s) and shows how broader political and ideological transformations had a significant impact on its discourse on Uruguayan democracy. Three components of such discourse are unpacked: The embrace of liberalism, the rejection of Marxism, and the uncritical engagement with the local political system, particularly the 'traditional parties.' This article explores the recent expansion of narrative approaches in International Relations (IR... more This article explores the recent expansion of narrative approaches in International Relations (IR) and the conceptual and political possibilities it brings about. Instead of suggesting a set of criteria through which we should evaluate narrative texts, we investigate what they are already doing in IR scholarship. We show that the space narrative writing delineates through the encounter between text and reader/reading potentiates critique and engages complexity in ways that are often not available in other forms of IR scholarship. Concretely, we examine themes around openness, contradiction, ambiguity, fracture, surprise, and the ungovernable aspects of social and scholarly life.

This auto-ethnography assembles ‘story’ and ‘theory’ to explore the politics of Political Science... more This auto-ethnography assembles ‘story’ and ‘theory’ to explore the politics of Political Science. The narration situates this academic discipline as a human activity, unpacking its interconnectedness vis-à-vis other realms of experience: the ‘individual’ level, the family structure and the Nation State. Power and knowledge circulate through all of these spaces without observing the borders that scholarship traces between them. Self-reflection is a transformative practice needed by both people and academia. Indeed, introspection needs to also disregard boundaries in order to grasp the complexity of personal-and-social-life. Introspection is extrospection and, therefore, it is a political exercise –as political as Political Science.

Español: Este texto carece de género o posee un género difícilmente identificable, nombrable. Posee elementos etnográficos enmarcados en un ejercicio autobiográfico (de ahí la noción de “auto-etnografía”). Mi experiencia vivida es ensamblada en tres registros (la estructura individual, familiar y nacional) y narrada en términos de su intersección con la historia de la ciencia política nacional (que, a su vez, es insertada en el itinerario disciplinar global). La teoría política permea la forma de contar la historia. Se trata, pues de análisis político en clave de introspección disciplinar auto-etno-biográfica. Y se lee como lo que es: una historia.

This paper explores what we call attachments to innocence and their implications for ethics and p... more This paper explores what we call attachments to innocence and their implications for ethics and politics. Such attachments seem to be a central feature of contemporary life both in the academy and in society at large. Our argument is that looking at the world through the prism of innocence entails a series of moves that obliterate complexity and lead towards perilous forms of simplification and dogmatism. Such moves include the policing of strict intellectual and moral boundaries between oppressors and oppressed, the fixity of victims and perpetrators, and the reliance on moral goodness as the foundation for action. Furthermore, contemporary attachments to innocence are intertwined with the operations of neoliberalism and neoliberal institutions which are able to absorb and incorporate projects of reform, and even radical interventions, in a variety of depoliticizing ways.

My PhD dissertation explored what I called the Politics of Political Science (PPS) in Latin Ameri... more My PhD dissertation explored what I called the Politics of Political Science (PPS) in Latin America. Concretely, I looked at power dynamics within and around the discipline, with a special focus on the impact of political regimes over academic production. I also analyzed the involvement of political science (PS) in the exercise of power, specifically in the cases of Chile and Uruguay. Now that the project, which included an intense effort of gathering and analyzing abundant data, has been completed, this presentation will return to the theoretical foundations of the exercise and ask: What do these two case studies teach us about ‘power-knowledge’ in Latin American academia and beyond? How do authoritarianisms and democracies affect us, political scientists, and vice versa? What are the most helpful ‘critical’ vocabularies and theories to confront PPS? Finally, what are the significant contributions ─if any─ of self-reflection to PS and political analysis?

This article seeks to destabilize this understanding by showing that important elements of the infrastructure of the discipline were created during, and sometimes by this authoritarian regime. More concretely, through an in-depth and extensive examination of the political science produced during the Chilean dictatorship, I identify and characterize an institutional and intellectual space that I will call Authoritarian Political Science (APS). The findings challenge the dominant narrative that links the institutionalization of our discipline in Latin America to liberal democracy in a linear fashion, and suggest the need for a nuanced, empirically informed and theoretically dense understanding of political science’s multiple historical trajectories.

En el marco de un proyecto mayor sobre “La política de la ciencia política” (Ravecca 2010; 2014; ... more En el marco de un proyecto mayor sobre “La política de la ciencia política” (Ravecca 2010; 2014; 2015) entre 2012 y 2013 fueron realizadas 58 entrevistas a politólogos en Chile y Uruguay. Esta presentación se basa en ese material y analiza en clave comparada las narrativas de los colegas sobre la historia, el desarrollo y el sentido de la disciplina. Se exploran cuestiones como el impacto de la dictadura, el rol del marxismo en los sesentas y setentas, la actual hegemonía de la elección racional, el extensivo uso del idioma inglés en la academia, las relaciones de género al interior de la disciplina, la debilidad institucional de la ciencia política latinoamericana, la relación Norte-Sur, entre otras. Asimismo, se examina sucintamente la literatura sobre “narrativa” y auto-etnografía en Relaciones Internacionales y Ciencia Política. Se reflexiona sobre el estatuto epistemológico de contar historias (“story telling”) y sobre la importancia de mantener la interpretación como recurso metodológico de la ciencia política.

Its empirics are based on a book series, initiated by RC 33 and published between 2006 and 2012, on the development and current state of the various sub-disciplines, asking the question of 'why we are where we are' in political science. The topics discussed in the first section on the discipline's actual strength are the relationship between the United States (US), Europe and other continents, the advances and challenges of the discipline, and the issue of fragmentation and specialization. The second section addresses the relevance of political science to society and politics and the third section the impact of current politics on the discipline. The propositions are intended to trigger debate among political scientists.

Este artículo analiza las tesis de maestría de ciencia política de la Universidad de Chile 1982-2000. Más concretamente, compara las décadas del 80 y del 90 en términos de perfil profesional de los estudiantes, área de investigación y temáticas abordadas, enfoques teóricos utilizados y posicionamiento ideológico frente a problemas como la naturaleza del marxismo, el fenómeno del ‘terrorismo’, la deseabilidad de la estabilidad institucional, entre otros. Los hallazgos presentados resultan significativos para repensar el vínculo de la disciplina con el proceso dictatorial en Chile, y constituyen un aporte para una reflexión más ambiciosa sobre la relación entre ciencia política y contexto. En este sentido se introduce la categoría de ciencia política autoritaria y se cuestiona teóricamente, y a la luz de la evidencia empírica, el cliché de que sin democracia liberal no puede haber una ciencia política institucionalizada e internacionalizada.

"Básicamente hoy traje cinco argumentos que me gustaría compartir con ustedes. Voy a introducir entonces dichas ideas de un modo un poco oscuro quizás y después, si me da el tiempo, voy a clarificarlas:
1. La importancia política de la reflexión. Quiero argumentar que el empirismo pragmático y tecnocrático dominante en realidad es hiper-teoricista. La objetividad científica es al menos a veces un recurso y discurso de poder que se coloca a sí mismo como neutral convirtiendo al otro en parcial, ideológico, sesgado, etc.
2. Nuestras vidas no vienen segmentadas en “economía”, “política”, “sociedad”, “subjetividad” y, por lo tanto, si queremos entender las relaciones de poder es preciso pensar la relación interna, íntima, casi relación de identidad entre economía política, subjetividad, discurso y epistemología. Esto implica desafiar el liberalismo como epistemología dominante y como principio estructurante de los saberes académicos.
3. Quiero relativizar la diferencia entre “nosotros”, o sea la academia crítica, y “los otros”, el mainstream, y voy a plantear que en definitiva el pensamiento crítico debe asumir la ironía de su propia miseria. No hay pura exterioridad entre academia y reproducción social; entre dominación y academia, y este rasgo es estructural y no pasa por buenas o malas intenciones. El académico crítico, para sobrevivir, tiene que desandar su teoría en el día a día. Me pregunto si no somos, al menos hasta cierto punto, ilusiones críticas en estructuras liberales.
Me pregunto además si criticar a los otros, a la derecha, lo neopositivista, etc. es suficientemente crítico… y si una actitud auto-celebratoria de un campo crítico con sus maestros y semidioses no termina en la mera reproducción de dicho campo. Quiero además hacer un llamado de atención sobre la cuestión del colonialismo que me pareció ausente o con una presencia problemática en el congreso. Permítanme tomar como ejemplo la cuestión del género. Especialmente teniendo en cuenta que el colonialismo europeo exportó en muchos casos la homofobia y la “diferencia sexual” a lo que eran sociedades más “avanzadas” en ese aspecto, hay algo muy paradójico en que los europeos hoy se horroricen por lo conservadores que somos "los oscuros del sur"… invisibilizando sus propios primitivismos, por lo demás.
4. Iba a hablar de dos figuras que me parecen muy interesantes como para movilizar las preguntas que acabo de plantear: la del terrorista y la del cura pedófilo.
5. Por último qué significa criticar al Frente Amplio. ¿Y por qué hay que hacerlo hoy?"

Intersectionality as Political Strategy: a Comparison Between LGBT and Feminist Movements in Uruguay (and Some Theoretical Reflections on Queer Politics)

In the context of the 2010 Pre-congress of the Sexualities Section of the Latin American Studies ... more In the context of the 2010 Pre-congress of the Sexualities Section of the Latin American Studies Association, many presenters, myself included, argued that a systematic comparison between feminist and LGTBQ movements is one of the most important future tasks for those scholars interested in “identity” politics and social movements in Latin America. This presentation is a contribution in this direction. The empirical location in which the research has been undertaken is Uruguay where sexual diversity and women rights have been intensively incorporated into the political agenda. The point of departure is the difference in terms of “visibility” gains between queer and feminist social movements. To some extent, and oversimplifying queers have succeeded and feminists have failed in this regard. The Sexual Diversity March has become one of the most relevant public events of the country while feminist politics do not effectively attract the Uruguayan youth and other progressive sectors. The question is then why. I will try to show that the key is that these movements differ in their political strategy: while Uruguayan feminists encapsulate their politics “within” feminism, queer activists tend to articulate their discourse and political activities to other identities and struggles, reshaping the notion of what doing politics from a queer perspective means, and enriching the project of the political left. Thus, I think that this case is also a good excuse to think about critical political theory: queer or class struggle? Both? How can/should we coneptualize/develop“leftist” politics in post-postmodern times?

Notre perspective n'est donc pas nouvelle dans le champ des sciences sociales d'autant que celles-ci réfléchissent depuis longtemps sur le rôle qu'elles ont dans la société. Cependant, s'il existe une relative attention pour l'histoire de la science politique latino-américaine, la réflexion épistémologique sur la relation complexe qu'elle entretient avec les objets qu'elle cherche à comprendre reste rare. La manière dont elle conçoit et étudie le politique a pourtant des effets importants non seulement sur la manière qu'elle a d'analyser ses objets, mais aussi sur le lieu qu'elle leur assigne dans la hiérarchie "épistémologique". En ce sens, l'histoire des idées devrait être une histoire sociale des idées et tenir compte du contexte politique, intellectuel et historique dans lequel s'inscrit toute production scientifique.

This year the journal contains two sections. Course description This course examines politics in the Global South. It introduces students to comparative politics while also including analyses from other disciplines and traditions such as political sociology and anthropology. Readings offer general surveys of entire continents and regions (Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia) as well as in-depth studies on specific topics such as gender, migration, urban politics, religion, the rise of the far-right, social movements and political innovations forged by progressive activists and intellectuals. The tension between the deepening of democracy and authoritarian backsliding will be a consistent topic throughout the term. Neoliberalism, state repression, political violence, marginalization, and the other themes covered are of universal significance. Similar challenges are currently being faced in countries like Canada and the United States. Furthermore, the course will examine political movements and experiences that have expanded democracy in significant ways and from which students, citizens and scholars from the so-called developed world have a lot to learn.

This upsurge comes with electoral and policy wins, but it also includes creative forms of activism targeting culture and public debate. Furthermore, far-right parties and movements have successfully reclaimed 'the margins,' positioning themselves as the only genuine alternative to the appropriation of institutions and the economy by greedy elites. But what is the far-right exactly? And why is it able to persuade, inspire, and mobilize? How have feminism, identity politics, and even drag shows become 'the people's foe' under the eye of many? What does the far-right reveal about contemporary society? This course invites students to explore these and other related questions. Included is a discussion of theories and approaches developed by the empirical school of political scientists. Emphasis is placed on the selection of methods as related to theory and research questions. Course description Training in research methods is essential not only for scholars but also for anyone who wants to understand and contribute to improve any aspect of society and politics. In this course students will learn to think about knowledge production independently and will also put those abilities into practice. A wide arc of epistemological ⃰ and methodological approaches will be explored. The emphasis will be on qualitative approaches, but quantitative methods and positivist research will receive proper attention. Lectures, class discussions, readings, and evaluations will cover the philosophical fundamentals, the defining features, and the practicalities of the different methods available today in the social sciences with emphasis on political science. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to propose and design a research project and even advance in its implementation. The theme of the project will be chosen freely by each student and the research proposal will be crafted independently with the ongoing support of the instructor, who will be a close companion during the journey.

El enfoque es eminentemente "práctico": "this book applies the values and theoretical frameworks of political theory to real world political issues" (5). Smits intenta, entonces, "aplicar" enfoques de teoría política a las grandes controversias que, sobre diferentes políticas públicas, vienen ocurriendo en el marco (político y epistemológico) de las democracias del "Norte Global". Entiendo por pensamiento radical aquel que habilita la captación de sí mismo en el delicado registro de sus condiciones de posibilidad y emergencia atreviéndose, nada menos, a tematizar con prolijidad y rigor sus implicaciones. Qué atraviesa (a) la palabra es una interrogante difícil porque coloca los propios enunciados en tanto cuestión analíticamente irresuelta y, por lo tanto, permite eludir destinos, politizarse y mirarse desde el lugar de una elaboración compleja. Edward Said, en no pocas ocasiones, ejerció esa manera de pensar. Sus obras han significado un aporte de tal magnitud que reclaman nuevas apropiaciones y relecturas. Compelen con fuerza a repensarse y a impugnar los dispositivos que operan sobre el propio mirar.

Como me está (re)enseñando un curso de posgrado sobre "Narrativa y auto-etnografía en las Relaciones Internacionales", la "genealogía de sí", mantener un ojo en las propias experiencias intelectuales y "reales" no tiene por qué ser un ejercicio de narcisismo vacío. Puede, también, ser un gesto intelectual y político de búsqueda de lo otro que yace en uno, y de los otros que están en los otros. Comparto, entonces, este texto de juventud.

Mouffe y Laclau se declaran sorprendidos de que, pasados veinte años de su primera edición, esta obra conserve plena vigencia y actualidad: los problemas vitales de la izquierda siguen girando en torno a la (im)posibilidad de una práctica hegemónico-democrática que conduzca a una transformación profunda de las relaciones de poder vigentes en las sociedades capitalistas (avanzadas o no) y, desde ahí, a una democracia radicalizada, libertaria y plural. Para caminar en esa dirección es imprescindible, según ellos, articular los diversos discursos emancipatorios a partir de dos dinámicas contrastantes y complementarias: la lógica equivalencial (igualdad) y la lógica de la autonomía (libertad).

Ahora las palabras antes que las piedras (o las patadas o los bastonazos o la cárcel o...). Antes las palabras, entonces, no usadas como piedras, porque las palabras también pueden estar insertas en dinámicas en que funcionan como tales... la enunciación puede querer ser pedrada... puede serlo en definitiva. Por ejemplo, desde el insulto hacia y el menosprecio (temeroso y simplificador) por “los manifestantes”, desde la palabra hiriente, cínica, pobre y brutal. ¿Qué se está haciendo cuando se actúa desde allí sino reproduciendo (o quizá produciendo a secas) un escenario de violencia y denostación, de daño al espacio público?

Es esperable que en los entornos democrático-liberales aparezcan y se desarrollen discursos de impugnación radical del “orden” –orden que, por lo demás y aunque el centrismo bienpensante trate de olvidarlo, es generador de daños radicales. La pregunta de cómo responder radicalmente a estos dispositivos que impactan en nuestras vidas diariamente no está predeterminada por ningún sujeto prepolítico (como la clase social) ni por nada. ¿Cómo responder radicalmente? ¿Dónde están las condiciones de posibilidad de un actuar y un decir radicales? ¿Qué significa, en definitiva, posicionarse en un radicalismo (im)posible? Encuentro aquí un núcleo duro y difícil de tematización del problema.

Desde esa disposición este artículo comenta "Seguridad, territorio, población", un volumen de quinientas páginas que reproduce el curso que el filósofo francés dictara en 1978 en el Collège de France y que, bajo esa misma consigna, se avocó al estudio de lo que denominó “biopoder”, y lo usa como catapulta para esbozar una reflexión que coloca la noción de “política” como una cuestión política en sí misma.

Building from my previous work on "right-wing intersectionality" (Ravecca et al, 2023) and the po... more Building from my previous work on "right-wing intersectionality" (Ravecca et al, 2023) and the politics of innocence (Ravecca and Dauphinee, 2022) this talk will explore the question of what it means to study the far-right beyond self-righteousness. Both journalistic commentary and scholarship largely understand the far-right as an abnormality, that is, as the radical-other of democracy, liberalism, the liberal order, globalization, and modernity. This move not only mimics the "populist" scapegoating that is so adamantly rejected by liberals and progressives, but also carries a plethora of historical and intellectual inaccuracies. Against the grain of complacency, I argue that the rise of the far-right constitutes a powerful opportunity to exercise critique and self-critique. I look at how relevant aspects of liberalism, neoliberalism, political science's conventional concept of democracy, and identity politics are appropriated, transformed (if necessary) and weaponized by the far-right. Furthermore, these reactionary forces have already been able to reshape mainstream conversations about important topics such as immigration, inequality, minority rights and more. Snapshots from the leadership and discourse of current Argentinian President Javier Milei will be used to illustrate the ways in which the far-right is redefining democracy and our contemporaneity in real time.

The notion and practice of “field-work” are usually taken from granted and treated as a technical... more The notion and practice of “field-work” are usually taken from granted and treated as a technical question (i.e. how to “properly” gather “the data”). However, many critical perspectives have shown that the (social) sciences are implicated in power relations. Thus, “field-work” needs to be interrogated in nuanced ways. Where is the “field”? Why are some countries frequently treated by scholars as producers of the “state of the art” (theory) while others are imagined as the place to gather data and do field-work? Does “field-work” finish when one arrives back to Pearson? Should this “epistemology of the adventurer” be challenged? Why “the poor”, “indigenous communities”, “subaltern groups” are seen, studied, talked about, and conceptually dissected while ethnographies and studies of the rich and powerful are rare? And what kind of ethical and epistemological commitments does that entail? Are graduate students of Canadian universities really that “privileged” in comparison to the “people” they “study” or the story is in some cases more complicated than that? What does the common lament about “how privileged we are” actually “do”, both politically and ethically? In sum, in what sense “field-work” can be seen as a power relation and academia as politically relevant? Our presenters will address some of these and other issues through their own research experience.

Recently, some interventions have been made in queer scholarship from transnational, postcolonial... more Recently, some interventions have been made in queer scholarship from transnational, postcolonial and political economy perspectives. However, these contributions remain exceptional and under theorized. Queerness is still frequently imagined and thought in isolation from social processes that shape the lived experiences of queer people and, therefore, relevant intersecting aspects of queer lives remain unaddressed. This paper problematizes this gap showing how power relations based on colonialism and capitalism affect queer experiences and realities. Therefore, this is a reflection on the complex and ambivalent politics of queerness in transnational times. We will ask the following questions through the paper. What does it mean to "do politics" from a queer perspective? How is the notion framed not only through different intellectual positions but also by the social actors involved in public debates? What are the implications of those different conceptions of queerness or, in other words, what are the different kinds of political (queer) strategies involved? To empirically ground the paper, we will look at the case of Queers Against the Israel Apartheid (QuAIA), an activist group based in Toronto (Canada).

Reflecting on this recognition, Prof. Elizabeth Dauphinee says of Paulo: "[he] is the very best we have to offer", and "one of the most illuminated minds I have ever encountered". His PhD supervisor, Prof. David McNally, describes Paulo's work as "strikingly original, enormously sophisticated theoretically, and inspired by a deep and abiding sense of social justice." We are interested in problematizing the globally dominant analytical perspectives on democratizat... more We are interested in problematizing the globally dominant analytical perspectives on democratization, which have mostly originated in English North America and Northern Europe, by way of looking at power relations from within and without political science as a discipline. We argue that such perspectives increasingly show serious shortcomings in explaining past andcurrent realities in Latin America and beyond. They not only analyze “power” but in fact incarnate unequal international power structures. Our analytical exercise is twofold. On the one hand, we engage in the analysis of the politics of political science, looking at the discipline as an object of (political) inquiry. On the other, and as a product of the latter, we propose a new category, namely toxic democracies, as a conceptual tool that might allow for a critical understanding of the international and transnational dimensions of political regimes and their transformations in the so called “Global South.” In other words, the politics of political science assists us in understanding and unpacking the existing biases in the literature on democratization, while toxic democracies performs an analytical intervention that disrupts the power dynamics of our discipline. Once again, epistemology and social research need each other to become effective and critical in their knowledge-production pursuits.

This article suggests the need for imagining assemblages and engagements between queer, Marxist, ... more This article suggests the need for imagining assemblages and engagements between queer, Marxist, postcolonial and indigenous perspectives in order to critically confront the complex and ambivalent politics of queerness today. It grounds and deploys this reflection through a critical exploration of "Dawn of a New Gay," a non-academic piece on 'po-mo homo' and the case of Queers Against the Israeli Apartheid, an activist group based in Toronto. Queerness, in our account, is constituted by dimensions which go far beyond a narrow conception of sexuality. Thus, 'queering queerness' implies talking about 'classing', 'gendering' and 'racialising' processes, avoiding an additive logic and acknowledging their interelated messiness. By employing 'queer' as a self-reflective, methodological tool, we examine its integral role in the processes of capitalism, racialisation, heteropatriarchy and colonialism. The suggested theoretical perspective has implications in terms of how to think of politics 'as such': there is a need, this article argues, to overcome economic and culturalist reductionisms in the approach to radical politics. Both are liberal in their 'ideological mechanics' because they proceed with the logic of segmentation and obscure how power(s) operate(s). Assembling critical perspectives is an impossible and necessary exercise of dereification of categories and theories but, more fundamentally, it is an attempt to imagine less oppressive political praxes and futures.

Focusing mainly on the cases of Chile and Uruguay, Ravecca employs different strands of critical theory to challenge the mainstream narrative about the development of the discipline in the region, emphasizing its ideological aspects and demonstrating how the discipline itself has been shaped by power relations. Ravecca metaphorically charts the (non-linear) transit from “cold” to “warm” to “hot” intellectual temperatures to illustrate his—alternative—narrative. Indeed, this political mutation within the social sciences at large, and in political science in particular, is related to a complex set of transformations that includes the political defeat of the left, the effects of the 1970s right-wing dictatorships in the Southern Cone, and the regional hegemony of the United States.

Plasmados en estilo académico unos, y en voz narrativa otros, los ensayos reunidos en la colección despliegan con vivacidad un arco de problemáticas comúnmente ignoradas por la investigación académica, tales como el vínculo entre lo personal y lo político, la tensa negociación en torno a la (des)naturalización de las identidades, y la relación entre lo que somos y lo que hacemos. Concretely, the article focuses on PS’ institutional birth and early period (1980s and 1990s) and shows how broader political and ideological transformations had a significant impact on its discourse on Uruguayan democracy. Three components of such discourse are unpacked: The embrace of liberalism, the rejection of Marxism, and the uncritical engagement with the local political system, particularly the ‘traditional parties.’ The argument is supported by a systematic analysis of the 163 articles published byRevista Uruguaya de Ciencia Política(RUCP) from 1987 to 2012 and 22 in-depth interviews with scholars from theInstituto de Ciencia Política(ICP) atUniversidad de la República(UdelaR).

La pregunta central del libro es como debe estar organizada la vida publica de "nuestras soc... more La pregunta central del libro es como debe estar organizada la vida publica de "nuestras sociedades". Y la respuesta que ofrece es una exploracion erudita y compacta de los debates mas salientes (al 2009) en la teoria politica anglosajona. El enfoque es eminentemente "practico": "this book applies the values and theoretical frameworks of political theory to real world political issues" (5). Smits intenta, entonces, "aplicar" enfoques de teoria politica a las grandes controversias que, sobre diferentes politicas publicas, vienen ocurriendo en el marco (politico y epistemologico) de las democracias del "Norte Global". (Este punto de vista que el libro asumeel de paises "occidentales", "ricos" y con democracias liberales "consolidadas"� no es un detalle, como veremos mas adelante). Estructurado en 12 capitulos y con una introduccion conceptual util para cursos iniciales de posgrado, el libro es un valioso material para los interesados en los principales debates ciudadanos hoy. La lista de temas tratados es extensa: distribucion de recursos (impuestos, bienestar y redistribucion), minorias culturales (reconocimiento y derechos), accion afirmativa, prostitucion y pornografia, matrimonio "igualitario", aborto y eutanasia, regulacion del discurso ofensivo, libertades civiles en tiempos de terrorismo, obligacion (o su ausencia) de los paises ricos de brindar ayuda externa, intervencion militar con fines humanitarios, y proteccion del medio ambiente y de las futuras generaciones (este ultimo apartado, dicho sea de paso, plantea una reflexion bien interesante acerca de los limites temporales y geograficos de las obligaciones de justicia) 1 . Los capitulos siempre tienen por titulo una pregunta que, en la mayoria de los casos, empieza con "?Debe. . .?" y, en todos los casos, es normativa. Smits, a su manera, hace honor a la complejidad de los fenomenos en cuestion. Si bien el lector puede intuir cierto "favoritismo" por algunas de las visiones en disputa y a veces la autora toma clara posicion, predomina una suerte de equilibrio conceptual y no la busqueda de soluciones teoricas rapidas. La discusion acerca del derecho al aborto (capitulo 7) es ilustrativa en ese sentido: la autora no solo no caricaturiza la (o)posicion "conservadora" sino que ademas lidia seriamente con argumentos complejos que relativizan el derecho de las mujeres "a decidir". Social scientists tend to think about their disciplines as the objective analysis of society. How... more Social scientists tend to think about their disciplines as the objective analysis of society. However, numerous critical theorists such as Edward Said, Max Horkheimer, Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Herbert Marcuse, as well as interpretativists and reflexivists (Jackson 2011; Denzin and Lincoln 2011; Flick 2007) have challenged the notion that knowledge production is politically neutral and argued that, in fact, it is a key component of the broader social and political relations in which it occurs. By taking part in the production of knowledge on society, social scientists participate in the production, legitimization or critique of the social order, social hierarchies, power relations, and political regimes. Several empirical, contemporary phenomena illustrate this idea, and make it particularly topical. Economics notoriously plays a key role in grounding the monetary policies implemented by central banks and the International Monetary Fund (Chwieroth 2010). Social scientists are regularly enrolled by political actors to help design institutions, policies, or electoral programs related to their field of expertise – for example, promoters of European institutions have heavily relied on social sciences to legitimate the integration process (Aldrin 2010; Bailleux 2013; Boncourt 2019). When not seen as a tool, social sciences are perceived as a threat: some increasingly authoritarian regimes like Erdogan’s Turkey and Orban’s Hungary have been taking concrete measures to thwart the development of these disciplines (Paternotte and Verloo 2020). Multiple questions arise from these examples: what is, concretely, the relationship between the development of the social sciences and the emergence of critical or legitimizing discourses on the social and political order? How do social and political contexts and actors influence the activity of social scientists? Why are some disciplines more heavily enrolled by established powers or movements critical of such powers at a given time? What are the profiles and trajectories of the scholars who get involved in the production of legitimizing or critical intellectual tools? What concrete forms do these tools take, from scientific ideas (paradigms, methods, arguments, etc.) to policy instruments (surveys, data banks, etc.)? This special issue contributes to answering these questions by focusing on the case of political science in the Americas. A discipline par excellence concerned with producing narratives on power relations, political science offers an interesting case study for observing the interplay between the development of the social sciences and the production of the social and political order (Ravecca 2019). The articles gathered in this special issue explore how politics and power dynamics affect political science and vice versa. They focus on the relationship between political regimes, contexts, and events on the one hand, and the academic field and the knowledge it produces on the other hand.

This article seeks to destabilize this understanding by showing that important elements of the infrastructure of the discipline were created during, and sometimes by this authoritarian regime. More concretely, through an in-depth and extensive examination of the political science produced during the Chilean dictatorship, I identify and characterize an institutional and intellectual space that I will call Authoritarian Political Science (APS). The findings challenge the dominant narrative that links the institutionalization of our discipline in Latin America to liberal democracy in a linear fashion, and suggest the need for a nuanced, empirically informed and theoretically dense understanding of political science's multiple historical trajectories.

Este artículo explora lo que denominamos interseccionalidad de derecha (ID). Al igual que la pers... more Este artículo explora lo que denominamos interseccionalidad de derecha (ID). Al igual que la perspectiva académica y activista de la interseccionalidad, la ID atiende a la interrelación entre distintos ejes de posicionamiento social y desigualdad. Sin embargo, el contraste entre ellas no podría ser mayor, ya que la ID no moviliza intersecciones para cuestionar el poder, sino para legitimar el statu quo y naturalizar mecanismos de opresión. El artículo muestra la centralidad del tema de la “ideología de género” en la ID. Para ello, analiza el discurso de los politólogos Agustín Laje y Christian Rosas. El estudio utiliza métodos mixtos: análisis estadístico de tuits (correlaciones y análisis de sentimientos) e interpretación de libros, videos, arengas y conferencias. Para consolidar los hallazgos, la exploración se extendió a otros/as 18 activistas y políticos/as. Concluimos que la potencia narrativa de la extrema derecha hoy radica en su carácter interseccional, en la apelación a las emociones, en el uso de la simplificación y en la reproducción obstinada y efectiva de los aspectos más conservadores del sentido común y del liberalismo.
