In a cross-sectional study including 403 women in three economic quintiles (Q), we investigated differences in dietary intake and nutrition sufficiency according to economic status and whether regular dietary intakes of pregnant women (PW,n203) differ from that of pre-pregnant women (PPW,n200). Dietary intake data were collected using 2×24 h dietary recall and FFQ. Energy, protein, Fe, Ca, Zn, vitamin A and vitamin C intakes were calculated utilising Food Composition Tables and compared with Indonesian recommendations for adequacy. Energy and protein intakes <70 % and Fe, Ca, Zn, vitamin A and vitamin C intakes <77 % of the local recommendation were considered insufficient. A higher intake of milk/dairy products (Q3, Q4), fruits and vegetables (Q2) and snacks (Q3) in PW was observed compared with PPW, but insufficient to meet nutrient requirements. Nutri...

Cells used in this study were breast cancer culture cells (MCF-7) and vero cells. Watercress was extracted using water solvent and 70% ethanol. Phytochemical test was performed on both types of extract. Toxicity test was measured using BSLT method, assessment of antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH method and inhibitory proliferation in cancer cell was measured using MTT Assay method. Analysis of the data using ANOVA, if there is a significant difference between treatments will be followed up with Duncan test. The results of phytochemical tests showed that watercress extracts had bioactive content namely flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The result of BSLT test showed that the strongest extract toxicity was 70% ethanol extract with LC 50 value of 406.02 ppm and had the highest antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 102.26 ppm, while proliferation inhibitory test found in MCF-7 breast cancer cells had IC50 value of 1.696 μg / ml and not toxic to vero cells. Result showed that the ethanolic extract of Nasturtium Officinale gave a significant effect on MCF-7 breast cancer cells inhibition (p=0.015) at concentration 50, 400, 800 and 1000 ppm. The mechanism of proliferative inhibition was associated with phytochemical content present in watercress.

Research paper thumbnail of Nutritional status of lactating women in Bogor district, Indonesia: cross-sectional dietary intake in three economic quintiles and comparison with pre-pregnant women

The way in which women accommodate for their increased nutritional needs during the lactation per... more The way in which women accommodate for their increased nutritional needs during the lactation period is poorly investigated. In a cross-sectional study involving 220 lactating women (LW), equally distributed in economic quintiles (Q2, Q3, Q4), we investigated whether habitual dietary intake of LW differed from that of 200 pre-pregnant women (PPW) studied using the same methodology. Differences in dietary intake and nutrition sufficiency according to economic status were also investigated. Dietary intake data were collected using 2 × 24-h dietary recalls and FFQ. Energy, protein, Fe, Ca, Zn and vitamins A and C intakes were calculated utilising local food composition tables and were compared against Indonesian recommendations for adequacy. Energy and protein intakes <70 % of the recommendation and Fe, Ca, Zn and vitamins A and C intakes <77 % of the recommendation were considered insufficient. Except for Zn, dietary intakes of all studied nutrients were higher in LW compared with PPW. However, for all studied nutrients, dietary intake was insufficient in >25 % of LW. For Q2-LW, this proportion was >50 %, except for protein. LW across all studied economic quintiles approximately doubled their vegetable intake, and 71 % of LW indicated a belief that this enhances lactation performance. Biochemical status parameters were analysed in a subset of forty-five women. Anaemia as well as Fe, Zn and Se deficiencies were prevalent among LW, supporting the nutrient intake deficiency data. Despite increasing intakes in LW compared with PPW, habitual diets in the study area do not provide for daily nutrient requirements in substantial proportions for both LW and PPW across all investigated economic groups.

A higher intake of milk/dairy products (Q3, Q4), fruits and vegetables (Q2) and snacks (Q3) in PW was observed compared with PPW, but insufficient to meet nutrient requirements. Nutrient intake calculations showed insufficiency in 26 % of PPW for protein and up to 70 % for Fe. Deficient nutrient intakes in PW were found in 49 % of the subjects for energy and up to 85 % for Fe. Energy and protein intakes decreased with decreasing economic quintiles in PPW and PW. Ca and vitamin A intakes were lower in Q2 compared with Q4. The proportion of animal protein in Q2-PW was low (31 %). Biochemical status parameters in a subset showed that anaemia and Fe and Zn deficiencies were prevalent among PPW and PW. Habitual diets in the study area did not meet the nutrient requirements for both PPW and PW across the investigated economic groups.

Commercially, free glutamate is available in form of monosodium glutamate (MSG) crystal. Seasoning or premix may also contain free glutamate or MSG. The aim of the present study was focus on the determination of the usage and potential/actual exposure of consumers to free glutamate from condiment and seasonings. There were several steps of the study, i.e. survey, laboratory analyses, data analyses, and evaluation of total exposure of free glutamate from condiment and seasonings. The survey was conducted to the 110 households in Bogor (rural) and 112 households in Jakarta (urban). The samples of condiment/seasoning were analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescent detector. The condiment/seasonings were categorized into 15 types, i.e. sweet soy sauce, salty soy sauce, fermented soybean paste, tomato sauce, MSG, premix seasoning, fermented fish/shrimp paste, chili sauce, ready to use seasoning, seasoned flour, dip and sauce, mayonnaise and mustard, spread, oyster and fish sauce, and teriyaki and others. The results of condiment/seasonings survey revealed that sweet soy sauce, MSG, and premix seasoning were used by most of households (±71% or more than 80 households) both in Bogor and Jakarta. The laboratory analyses of free glutamate from condiment/seasonings revealed that the highest free glutamate content was found in MSG (733.29 mg/g). Beside MSG, there were three other condiments that also had high free glutamate content, i.e. premix seasoning (70.77 mg/g in Bogor and 63.66 mg/g in Jakarta), oyster and fish sauce (46.76 mg/g in Bogor), and ready to use seasoning (15.71 mg/g in Jakarta). Although the average condiment/seasonings usage in Bogor (5.39 g/cap/day) was lower than that in Jakarta (9.62 g/cap/day), but the free glutamate intake from condiment/seasonings in Bogor (847.04 mg/cap/day) was higher than that in Jakarta (615.87 mg/cap/day). This was due to the high contribution of MSG that used in higher amount in Bogor.

Further analysis purposes determine the primary determinant of obesity in postmenopausal women in the city of Bogor A number of samples analyzed 888 postmenopausal women from subset data of research "Risk Factors Cohort Study of Non-communicable Diseases" follow-up of 2 years (2011-2013 and 2012-2014). Data were collected by interview, measurement and examination in 5 villages in the city of Bogor. Obesity is determined based on BMI ≥25. Determinant included demographic, health status and risk behavior. Data were analyzed with multiple logistic regression. The prevalence of obesity in postmenopausal women 57.2 percent. The main determinant of obesity are sufficient levels of carbohydrate aOR 4.6 (95% CI 2.55 to 8.23) than less. Other factors include abnormal hypertriglyceride aOR 3.2 (95% CI 1,85-4.93) than normal levels, less physical activity aOR 1.6 (95% CI 1.08 to 2.38) than enough activities, the adequacy of excessive protein and family history of obesity with aOR 0.23 (95% CI 0.15 to 0.36) and aOR 0.42 (95% CI 0.28 to 0.61), respectively. Lifestyle modification by limiting carbohydrate intake, walking every day and aerobic exercise at least 1 times a week for one hour and monitor blood triglyceride levels are expected to prevent obesity and decrease overweight.

Research paper thumbnail of Nutritional status of lactating women in Bogor district, Indonesia: cross-sectional dietary intake in three economic quintiles and comparison with pre-pregnant women

In a cross-sectional study including 403 women in three economic quintiles (Q), we investigated differences in dietary intake and nutrition sufficiency according to economic status and whether regular dietary intakes of pregnant women (PW, n 203) differ from that of pre-pregnant women (PPW, n 200). Dietary intake data were collected using 2 × 24 h dietary recall and FFQ.
