Hopefully not too weird for a first post | [Jan. 13th, 2009|02:53 pm]Dissertators Anonymous |

Hi all. I'm actually a graduate student in English Literature and I'm in the process of writing my thesis on the persistence of the fairy tale princess as a cultural icon and how new media is changing her. I have a questionnaire posted here: princess_thesisthat is the cornerstone of my independent research. I need as many responses as I can get before January 19th. I'm hopeful that community members might consider responding to the questionnaire (via comments or you can email me your response - details on the community) and also sharing the link with anyone/everyone they can think of. Fairy tales still play such an important part in cultural life and I'd love to have responses from all corners I can reach. Thank you[Also...I'm obviously an English Lit major, rounding the corner as far as preparing to write the paper itself, scheduled to be done by April 1 and graduate in May - gak! My favorite distraction right now is the tea shop I just opened. Writing a thesis WHILE opening a new business has been a really interesting challenge.]

deconstruction project launched | [Jan. 7th, 2009|02:39 pm]Dissertators Anonymous |

My major professor seriously redlined my rough draft and I've gone back to the drawing board. I've completely deconstructed the lit review down to the bare bones in order to recompile it. But with any luck, and the two FedEx boxes of fresh library books, I will be able to fill the gaping holes she point out in her sanguinous edit. How have others handled such complete rewrites?

2008 Summer Academic Working Group | [Jun. 2nd, 2008|10:24 pm]Dissertators Anonymous |

Hey, all--If you're looking for a way to force yourself to work over the summer, consider joining the Summer Academic Working Group. It's a great way to get feedback, have false deadlines that force you to actually write your sh*t, and stay motivated over the big summer lag. I participated last year, and am helping with some of the organizing last year, so if you have any questions you can post as a comment. ______________________________We are happy to announce the 2008 Summer Academic Working Group. This peer accountability and feedback system allows users from anywhere in the world to share documents and feedback. Working group participants participate in "clusters" around a common discipline, theme, or type of work. Clusters exchange work on a regular basis - normally every two weeks - by posting it to a secure course and project management site at the University of Michigan. Participants then provide and receive feedback for members of their cluster. Having a deadline helps everyone get more done, and having feedback makes what's done better. For more information, or for sign-up instructions, go to http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lpowner/workgroup.htm .Any questions can be posted to here as a comment to share with everyone, or emailed via the webpage.Last year some 20 people participated. It's a really nice opportunity to get feedback from people you don't already hear from regularly or who might bring very different perspectives to your work.(Crossposted to a bunch of academic communities; please feel free to post to other discipline-specific or personal groups, blogs, or lists via LJ or email.)

1. Field of study - Sociology2. Type of thesis (dissertation, masters thesis) - Masters thesis3. General topic of your thesis (don't rewrite your whole thesis here plz!) - I am doing a study of Mexican immigrant mothers' living in new immigrant destinations. Specifically, I am looking at the impact of changing gender relations in this community.4. What point are you at in your work? (Brainstorming, writing a proposal, just starting to write, about half way done, almost done) - I am learning the software (Atlast.i) while collecting more interviews. Since I am using a multi-method approach, I fell I am all over the place when it comes to where I am.5. What is your timetable for finishing? - July 25!6. Favorite thing to do while procrastinating (besides posting to livejournal) - I am socially involved with immigrant rights activism and collaborate with other community groups. I am also a mom, so no time to procrastinate.

Hello everyone, looking forward to hearing about your research!1. Field of study - Sociology2. Type of thesis (dissertation, masters thesis) - Masters3. General topic of your thesis (don't rewrite your whole thesis here plz!) - I am doing an ethnography of non-professional dancers/dance families with an emphasis on the processes involved in forming and coordinating events.4. What point are you at in your work? (Brainstorming, writing a proposal, just starting to write, about half way done, almost done) - I am still in the data collection phase (doing interviews, observations, etc.) but am also beginning to write various sections. For those of you not familiar with ethnography, it is a less linear way of doing research, and data collection continues to occur even when analysis and write-up have begun...so it's difficult to pinpoint an exact phase.5. What is your timetable for finishing? - August 2008.6. Favorite thing to do while procrastinating (besides posting to livejournal) - spending time with my husband/our dog.
