To develop this argument, I venture into an ethnographic exploration of the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology, in Vancouver, Canada, mobilizing the categories of ethnography of absences and ethnography of emergences, inspired in the work of Boaventura de Sousa Santos. I conclude illustrating my argument with a proposal for an ethnographic installation at the Théo Brandão Museum in Maceió, on the ‘Muzzle Law’, intended both as a meta museological comment and as a pragmatic civic strategy of opposition to the coup against democracy currently unfolding in Brazil.

The concept aligns directly with value systems intrinsic to Indigenous South American cultures, and serves as a rallying cry to move beyond Western ideals and practices of development and progress largely measured by profit.
The objects displayed in Amazonia: The Rights of Nature have been exclusively assembled from MOA’s collection of acquisitions and donations. Included amongst the exhibition are items from Frank Burnett’s founding collection, donated to the University of British Columbia in 1927, ensuring the exhibition spans more than 100 years of exchange between Vancouver and Amazonian peoples.
Taking over MOA’s O’Brian Gallery, the collection’s items are primarily composed of simple, identifiable elements: vegetal fibers, wood, animal parts, clay, or feathers. These uncomplicated components are transformed into extremely sophisticated and intricate textiles, basketry, ceramics, feather works and jewelry, displaying the knowledge and craftsmanship of some of the groups who reside in the region. Taken in its entirety, the exhibition promises to offer a revealing window into one of the world’s more culturally, socially, and linguistically diverse regions, as well as a new framework for addressing some of the globe’s most pressing environmental challenges.

These women – Paz, Llanca and Ida – are three generations of the same family of Chilean immigrants to Canada, residing in Edmonton.
In this 13 minute sound installation, each of these women addresses their children telling about their past experiences expressing their concerns and giving advise for their future. They debate their complex identities as women, as immigrants and as members of the same family who are, differently, moving back and forth between distinct cultural worlds brought together through a web of affects.

I am thinking of music as a possible source of guiding metaphors to explore museum practice
unpublished draft, 2017
I propose to explore the persuasive capacity of museums and galleries to change the world by mean... more I propose to explore the persuasive capacity of museums and galleries to change the world by means of two gestures: one is by backing up a little from grand moves and narratives to focus on specific instances; and the other is by stepping aside from linear notions of time and museum practices (marketing language would put it as ‘groundbreaking’, ‘cutting edge’, ‘never seen before’,etc.) to look at a few works from the standpoint of a ‘decentred circularity’, an expression that has had me seduced initially for its suggestive paths – the circular movement, the going back, the returns, the new beginings, the ‘here we go again’–ness of it [which is, btw, how most of us describe our exhibition projects…] but also for its wise-ness in that we go back from a different center each time, because we learn from mistakes as we become updated versions of ourselves, and hopefully better versions.
