Research paper thumbnail of Reconstructing Semantic Roles: Proto-Indo- European *-bhi

Reconstructing Syntax, 2020

Traditional approaches to the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European nominal morphosyntax have ope... more Traditional approaches to the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European nominal morphosyntax have operated by first reconstructing the set of morphological cases for every declensional type, and then attempting to establish the meaning of the different cases, regardless of the specific ending that was used for each declensional type. However, more insight can be gained into the reconstruction of the nominal syntax of proto-languages by applying the concepts and methodologies developed in recent years in functional-typological approaches to language study. Under this approach, the aim of syntactic reconstruction in the nominal domain lies not in determining the meaning of a given case as a whole but rather in elucidating the semantic role(s) that a specific formative could be used for and, to the extent that this is possible, how those semantic roles relate to each other in historical terms. In this article we survey the semantic roles related to *-bhi-endings in the old Indo-European languages. In the traditional reconstruction, *-bhi has been considered the suffix expressing the Instrumental plural of the athematic declension. However, in the various branches of the family in which it is attested, *-bhi-endings express a broad array of semantic roles. When charted on a diachronic semantic map of Instrument and related semantic roles, the *-bhi-endings appear to cover neighbouring areas, and it becomes clear that they have followed well-known paths of semantic change. If we add the information about *-bhi in the pronominal declension and its etymology, a neat grammaticalisation process is revealed. This results in a ‘dynamic’ reconstruction of the morphosyntax of the proto-language, which is more in accord with what we know about the actual processes of semantic change in grammatical markers and paradigmatisation of markers more generally.

Morphological structures, however, are not immune to change and the order of morphemes
can be altered in the history of a language due to various kinds of processes, thus leading to an unusual order inside the word. The expected order of morphemes can be restored in different ways, one of which is the externalization of inflection. There are interesting
examples of this type of processes in the pronominal inflection of the ancient Indo-European languages, which provide relevant information about this type of change.
After revising those processes, we focus on the analysis of the *-sm-enlargement –apparently devoid of any semantic content– that appears in the oblique cases of certain Indo-European demonstrative pronouns (such as Skt. tásmai, Goth. Þamma, OPrus. stesmu, etc.) and in some
cases of the 1st and 2nd plural personal pronouns (Skt. asmā́n and yuṣmā́n, Gk. hēmeîs and hūmeîs, etc.). We carry out a thorough survey of those forms and provide evidence to support the idea that this -sm-enlargement was originally an emphatic particle that has been ‘trapped’
between the pronominal stem and the nominal endings and we interpret the data in the light of the processes mentioned above.

The relationship of those superlative suffixes to ordinal suffixes is known, but its nature has not been appropriately explained. The suffixes *‑to- and *‑mo- must have originated in the ordinals as thematic formations derived from cardinals and then expanded to the superlatives through the ordinal ‘first’ and other semantically related adjectives (‘last’ and polar/spatial adjectives). Those words provide the semantic and combinatory links between ordinals and superlatives that account for the shared morphology, as the textual evidence also proves. The use of *‑to- and *‑mo- in all those words across the Indo-European languages shows a systematic correlation. The suffixes *‑is-to- and *‑is- ̊mo- are a nice example of transparent nesting, since both include the zero-grade of the comparative suffix. They must have started as relative superlatives, given that ‘first’, ‘last’ and the other related words cannot be absolute superlatives. This is in accordance with a general tendency of evolution of the expressions of the superlative degree.

There is no general agreement as to whether relative clauses can be reconstructed for Proto-Indo-... more There is no general agreement as to whether relative clauses can be reconstructed for Proto-Indo-European and, in case they can, as to what pronoun was used for introducing them. It is thus interesting to review the evidence available for the reconstruction of the process of grammaticalization of *kwi-/kwo- relative clauses. Attention is brought to the synchronic and diachronic typological evidence of the relationship between relative, interrogative, and indefinite pronouns, since it can shed light on these phenomena. New insights can also be gained if we take into account the existence not only of restrictive and appositive relative clauses, but also of a third type – maximalizing relative clauses. The uses
of *kwi-/kwo- relative clauses in older Indo-European languages suggest that the grammaticalization of this pronoun as a relative marker can be best explained as arising from its previous interrogative value and must have originated in maximalizing relative clauses.

It is argued that the appropriate methodology for the study of this language should rely on a thorough internal analysis of the data provided by the inscriptions themselves, instead of jumping to hasty interpretations and etymological proposals allegedly supporting its classification as a Celtic language. Internal evidence provides relevant information about phonetics and allows for identifying possible lexemes and suffixes, which is
crucial for the advancement in the understanding of this language.

Ancient indigenous languages of Spain and Portugal (Palaeohispanic languages) are attested throug... more Ancient indigenous languages of Spain and Portugal (Palaeohispanic languages) are attested through a limited number
of extant documents and sources. Despite this, the number of inscriptions in Palaeohispanic languages grows every year and
there are important findings from time to time. Any printed editions grow older very quickly and supplements cannot keep
up with the publication of new findings. The production of an electronic corpus that can be updated and modified as new
inscriptions appear and improvements in the reading and interpretation of published inscriptions are proposed was, therefore,
a must.
Since its original inception the Hesperia databank was designed to fill that gap. It gathers comprehensive information about the
ancient indigenous languages of Spain, Portugal and Southern France. It includes the extant inscriptions in those languages
(Iberian, Celtiberian, Lusitanian and less well identified languages), and also other linguistic records, such as the indigenous
names (personal names, god names, and place names) that appear on Latin inscriptions or are mentioned by Latin and Greek
sources.
This contribution provides a detailed technical description of the Hesperia databank, which has also been the starting point for
developing the AEHTAM databank of Late Antique and Medieval Inscriptions from Spain. Information about this databank is also
provided in this chapter.

The handbook, which is the fruit of the collaboration of a group of specialists from various universities and research centres in Italy and abroad, aims to provide an updated overview about Mycenaean epigraphy. It contains an introduction to the writing and language of the Mycenaean texts and a detailed analysis of the main Linear B documents divided by topic. In the first volume the Linear B writing system and the Mycenaean scribal and administrative practices are analyzed and compared with their Minoan antecedents (Cretan Hieroglyphics and Linear A). The second volume contains a detailed description of the different production sectors as they can be reconstructed from the Linear B texts as well as a synthesis of some major topics relating to the Mycenaean world, such as geography, society, economy and religion. Each chapter is provided with an essential bibliography. The book ends with a glossary of the Mycenaean words.

Research paper thumbnail of The etymology of Greek σειρήν revisited

Glotta, 2018

The standard etymological dictionaries of Greek mention two possible etymologies for the word σει... more The standard etymological dictionaries of Greek mention two possible etymologies for the word σειρήν ‘siren’: a relationship either with σειρά ‘cord, rope’, or else with Σείριος ‘Sirius, the dog star’. Neither of these is very convincing on semantic and morphological grounds. The Mycenaean word se-re-mo- shows that the lexeme was originally an m-stem, and both the scarcity of m-stems in Greek and Indo-European and the presence of an initial s- that has not become an aspirate point to a non-Indo-European origin of the word. In the past, some scholars proposed that it must be a Semitic loanword related to the root of Hebrew šîr ‘sing’, but these explanations suffered from certain flaws in the detail. Meanwhile, Ugaritic šrm, a dual or plural of the word šr ‘singer’, appears to be a good candidate as the source of Gr. This assumption also suits the cultural and chronological context in which speakers of Greek in the second millenium BC are expected to have adopted the word.

After analyzing all their occurrences in the extant Greek texts, it is argued that ὁποδαπός is basically an interrogative and its use as a relative is very exceptional. As for ὁπηλίκος, it is employed both as an interrogative and a relative, and also as an indefinite; this allows for identifying the contexts in which the change in function and meaning took place.

After summarizing the most sig-nificant ideas about eschatology and cosmology, special attention is paid to the different ways of achieving liberation from rebirth and to the stages and goals of men’s life. The concept of dharma (‘duty, obligation’) is analyzed in comparison to Western philosophical and religious traditions on ethics and the importance of castes and hierarchy is considered within this frame. Finally, some ideas for reflection in the context of current debates concerning philosophy, politics, and religion are proposed, based on key concepts of Hinduism.

The appropriate reading is Silvano te gratia. The inscription, therefore, contains the name Silvanus, which is either a new occurrence of that personal name or, less probably, of the homonymous god name. It can be dated to the end of the 2nd century or the beginning of the 1st century BC and, very interestingly, provides an early instance of the substitution of the accusative case of a personal pronoun for the dative case.

*dheH1-k- in the Italic languages. Present tense forms of that root are characterized by a zero root grade and a suffix *-yo-, while the perfect is a formation with zero root grade and reduplication (*fe-fak-). Faliscan faced and its correspondants in Sabellic languages can be best explained as "dereduplicated” perfects, as opposed to the “aoristic” Latin perfect feci. The fact that faced is the perfect of the verb “make” in Faliscan also shows that
Faliscan fifiked and fifiqod cannot belong to that root. This is an additional piece of evidence against the existence of a perfect with reduplication
and a long root vowel (the *fe-fēk- type) in the Italic languages.

The curious case of reconstruction in syntax, 2020

The general consensus in the historical linguistics community for the last half a century or so h... more The general consensus in the historical linguistics community for the last half a century or so has been that syntactic reconstruction is a bootless and unsuccessful venture. However, this view has slowly but steadily been changing among historical linguists, typologists, and anthropological linguists alike. More and more syntactic reconstructions are being published by respectable and virtuous publication venues. The debate on the viability of syntactic reconstruction, however, continues, and issues like i) lack of cognates, ii) lack of arbitrariness in syntax, iii) lack of directionality in syntactic change, iv) lack of continuous transmission from one generation to the next, and v) lack of form-meaning correspondences have, drop by drop, been argued not to be problematic for syntactic reconstruction. The present volume contributes to two of these issues in detail; first the issue of reliably identifying cognates in syntax and second , the issue of directionality in syntactic change. A systematic program is suggested for identifying cognates in syntax, which by definition is a different enterprise from identifying cognates in phonology or morphology. Examples are given from several different language families: Indo-European, Semitic, Austronesian, Jê, Cariban, and Chibchan. Regarding the issue of directionality for syntactic reconstruction, most of the studies in this volume also demonstrate how local directionality may be identified with the aid of different types of morphosyntactic flags, particularly showcased with examples from Chibchan, Semitic, and various Indo-European languages.
