This intertextual link sheds light on a now-lost passage of Cicero’s Aratea and raises some questions about the relationship between Cicero’s dialogue and Catullus 64.

After a brief survey on astronomical reminiscences, I focus on sections relating to the dismantling of the Augustan ideology discourse (Lucan. i 143-157 and vii 860-868), where Lucan evokes Germanicus with an interesting antiphrastic attitude. Beneath the surface of Germanicus’ work, light is cast on Lucan’s reception of Augustus’ Res Gestae (especially in Lucan. v 372-373). The last section of the article is devoted to Lucan’s claim of immortality and its literary sources (Lucan ix 980-986): among Virgil, Ennius and Ovid, we can also appreciate the presence of Germanicus’ poetic self-representation.

Id. 17.58 – 76): the analysis will be developed in detail in order to enable the reader to perceive all the intertextual links existing between the two texts and will lead to a wider consideration of the literary background of the encomiastic epigram.

The analysis, developed through an in-depth reading of the most relevant passages, defines Trajan’s twofold attitude towards his model: on the one hand a singular effort to broaden Augustus’ successes, on the other the tendency to manifest his own self-restraint in contrast to the predecessor’s behaviour. The final section of the article is devoted to Pliny’s treatment of the word saeculum, which powerfully invokes the presence of another Augustan theme: the return of the Golden Age.

Virgil and Avienius, and focuses particularly on a lexical problem of Cicero’s Aratea, consisting in the explanation of the word mollipes. Virgil’s rewriting of Aratus in the first book of Georgics is then discussed in detail in order to demonstrate the presence of a “window reference” so far undiscovered, which may shed light on Avienius’ version of the meteorological sign examined in the present paper.
