Review of Cognitive Linguistics
The aim of the present paper is to define the notion of ablativity in terms of its event structur... more The aim of the present paper is to define the notion of ablativity in terms of its event structure. To achieve this goal, the authors discuss the contribution of several semantic theories dealing with that conceptual class to finally propose their own definition, extensively based on the cognitive frame-based model by Wotjak (2006; 2011a; 2016). Even though the survey is mainly concerned with the theoretically relevant aspects of that semantic class, many of them are also illustrated with examples from different languages, especially from Latin, Spanish and German. Finally, the authors explain how ablativity conceptually relates to other semantic classes, such as concomitance or possession.

This paper discusses the major linguistic theories concerned with the distinction between proper ... more This paper discusses the major linguistic theories concerned with the distinction between proper and common names. At the same time, it aims to show that a border line between both categories cannot be drawn without answering the question about the capacity of proper names to express denotative meaning. There seems to be little agreement in this respect since the classical points of view linked to Mill and Jespersen, which is why linguists and philosophers still lack a common understanding on this point. In order to clarify the origin of this debate, it will be approached from different perspectives and fields of linguistics, including an analysis of Eugenio Coseriu’s position revealed in a manuscript on this topic made available by the Eugenio-Coseriu-Foundation (www.coseriu.org) and which has remained unpublished until nowadays.

The aim of this paper is to study the process of linguistic change recently detected in the prono... more The aim of this paper is to study the process of linguistic change recently detected in the pronominal system of the Spanish variety from the Canary Islands. According to a number of parameters which define the domain of study, such as age, gender, sociocultural level, origin, residence and possible influence of other varieties, the survey makes use of data extracted from the social network Facebook comments to try to find out to what extend the pronominal system generally used in the Canary Islands has undergone a relevant change and what kind of system(s) can best represent the linguistic competence of at least some part of this speech community. Finally, it discusses whether or not the attested change can be related to linguistic self-esteem problems or the influence of peninsular Spanish.

The aim of the present contribution is to define how can verb particle constructions in both sate... more The aim of the present contribution is to define how can verb particle constructions in both satellite-framed languages like Germanic, Ancient Greek or Latin and verb-framed languages like Romance (Talmy, 2000) be analyzed in a unified semantic model, which is compatible with the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG: Steedman, 2000; Baldridge and Hoyt, 2015). It is argued that the syntactic-semantic type postulated for local adjuncts as well as the type of semantic modification rule applied to compose such structures can predict not only the combinatorial distribution of motion verbs in Germanic, as opposed to Romance, but also the behaviour of cross-categorial domains like indirect/direct causation, subordination and secondary predication among several lexical classes. Finally, it is explained how it is possible for Romance to assume the syntactic expression of satellite structures, even if this language family does not belong to the satellite-framed typology.

ABSTRACT «The issue of grammatical and lexical correspondences between Greek, Latin, German and Spanish». This paper presents an approach to a comparative analysis of the grammatical and lexical correspondences between classical languages, German and Spanish, taking as a starting point the preverbal ablatives structures, paying attention to the correspondence of aj pov-/ ab-/ ab-/ a(b). INTRODUCCIÓN Las correspondencias léxico-gramaticales en las lenguas clásicas, especial-mente, en textos bíblicos, fueron uno de los aspectos a los que el Dr. José González Luis dedicó su vida académica. Ahondando en este mismo ámbito de trabajo, con motivo de este merecido homenaje, queremos presentar los resultados parciales de un proyecto común-bajo la batuta del Prof. José Juan Batista Rodríguez-en torno al estudio de las equivalencias interlingüísticas, en las que además de las lenguas clásicas, latín y griego, tenemos en cuenta el alemán y el español. The present paper provides a critical review of some of the formal definitions usually put forwar... more The present paper provides a critical review of some of the formal definitions usually put forward for the change of the state operator BECOME. It was first developed by Dowty (1979) in the framework of interval semantics. In order to overcome the main difficulties that are often encountered when applying those definitions to a broader range of data, we propose to start the event calculus by defining an irreducible time operator STATE as a universal semantic primitive which ranges over all non-logical and language-dependent constants. As a result, BECOME can be redefined as its logical complement. This theoretical change of perspective sheds light on the causes of some semantic shifts detected in the behavior of Spanish achievement and accomplishment predicates. Moreover, we discuss a possible definition for a semantic or mental time, relating its properties with those of physical time and its theoretical models.

Para explicar un texto como macroestructura sintáctico-semántica se recurre con frecuencia a la e... more Para explicar un texto como macroestructura sintáctico-semántica se recurre con frecuencia a la etimología del término latino tĕxĕre ‘tejer’ (Adamzik 2004: 33), estableciendo un paralelismo entre el proceso de tejer una tela y el de construir un texto. Se suele ir más allá en algunas aproximaciones teóricas, haciendo una diferencia entre el "texto" como producto o token textual (i.e., la tela o el tejido) y el "texto" como textura (i.e., modelo abstracto de lo efectivamente tejido, una forma de type textual). Además, se suele identificar el texto como función que convierte la textura en el objeto material, la tela. En este sentido, el telar simboliza esta función (cf. la gramática transoracional en el modelo de Coseriu 2007). Asimismo, es conocida la definición de texto de Trujillo como forma semántica (1995), como textura o como mecanismo mental que lo produce (Trujillo 2011: 100-101), advirtiendo del error de identificar las texturas con los textos o, incluso, las texturas con las funciones pragmáticas de los textos. Hasta aquí todo apunta a una metáfora muy oportuna para fines didácticos o de claridad. Nuestra aportación demuestra que no se trata, en absoluto, de una metáfora. Para ello, nos basamos por un lado en el cálculo de Lambek (1958, 2014) para gramáticas categoriales, cuyo poder generativo se ha revelado equiparable al de las gramáticas que caracterizan la sintaxis del lenguaje natural (Bar-Hillel 1964, Steedman 2000) y, por otro, en la teoría de nudos perteneciente a la rama matemática de la topología. Demostramos así una correspondencia directa entre los axiomas del cálculo de Lambek y los de la teoría de nudos. Esta teoría está motivada por los principios que describen el entrelazado y la cohesión de hilos como los conocemos normalmente, lo cual nos permite interpretar la metáfora textual de una forma plástica, directa.
