Aim: We compare the performance of major decision tree-based ensemble machine learning models on the task of COVID-19 death probability prediction, conditional on three risk factors: age group, sex and underlying comorbidity or disease, using the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s COVID-19 case surveillance dataset. Method: To evaluate the impact of the three risk factors on COVID-19 death probability, we extract and analyze the conditional probability profile produced by the best performing model. Result: The results show the presence of an exponential rise in death probability from COVID-19 with the age group, with males exhibiting a higher exponential growth rate than females, an effect that is stronger when an underlying comorbidity or disease is present, which also acts as an accelerator of COVID-19 death probability rise for both male and female subjects. These results are discussed in connection to healthcare and epidemiological concerns and in the degree to which they reinforce findings coming from other studies on COVID-19.

Detection of stress biomarkers molecules, non-invasively, through (non-induced) sweat sampling is... more Detection of stress biomarkers molecules, non-invasively, through (non-induced) sweat sampling is an important research field since sweat is a potential diagnostic fluid for early and continuous human health monitoring, not only for stress-related conditions directly but also for other pathologies (e.g., associated with chronic diseases). The simultaneous detection of multiple potential biomarkers in sweat samples, using simple and low-cost electrochemical methods (detecting patterns or “electrochemical fingerprints”) requiring no sample preparation and its correlation with physiological conditions, is an attractive methodology but not readily achievable. Several of these potential biomarkers’ electrochemical response presents very close oxidation potentials, among other factors that hamper the detection, such as pH dependence of the electrochemical response or partial adsorption on electrode surfaces. Disposable screen-printed electrode materials, with relatively low-cost, could be useful to overcome the difficulties. A set of selected potential stress-related (non-protein) biomarkers (tyrosine, phenylalanine, dopamine, serotonin, and hydrocortisone) was used in the current study for qualitative electrochemical detection on different screen-printed carbon-based electrodes. The detection was attained in simulated sweat solutions and real sweat samples. The goal was to evaluate the electrochemical response on the different surfaces and determine the most suitable carbon-based screen-printed electrodes that may be used in future sensing devices.

The research methodology used had three phases: bibliographical research; qualitative research, assessed through content analysis of a structured interview and quantitative research, which statistically analyzed data obtained from the application of a questionnaire, adapted by Rouco (2012). It has been found that the leadership competencies most used by the leaders of the PJ Units are transparency, human relationship, communication, interpersonal relations, technical and professional skills, decision making, guidance for the task, vision and, a competence not identified in the model: motivation. It was concluded that the leaders’ skills related to the management of the PJ Units, the existence of a vision, together with interpersonal re...

For this study, was used quantitative method and a survey was implemented comprising three questionnaires: one on leadership competences, one on communication styles, and one on with three criterion factors (extraordinary effort, group effectiveness and satisfaction). The survey was administered to a sample of 804 soldiers (30 Junior Officers, 81 Sergeants and 693 privates and corporals). The analysis of the data revealed that subordinates perceive that their commanders (junior officers) practice task oriented leadership behaviors, particularly on “orientation to the mission” and “decision making”. Notwithstanding, the sampling methodology is critical, and it must be assessed prior to using sweat for clinical diagnosis. In the current work, the analytical methodology was further developed taking into account the sampling step, in view of the identification and level variations of sweat components that have potential to be stress biomarkers using separation by liquid chromatography and detection by tandem mass spectrometry, in order to attain a screening profile of 26 molecules in just one stage. As such, the molecule identification was used as a test for the evaluation of the sampling procedures, including the location on the body, using patches for long-term sampling and vials for direct sampling, through a qualitative approach. From this evaluation it was possible to conclude that the sampling may be performed on the chest or back skin. Additionally, p...

The research seeks to identify the role of the initial training course for professional firefighters in the proficiency level of leadership competences in trainees at the Lisbon Fire Service. To achieve the objectives of the investigation, the researchers adopted a quantitative method with a longitudinal case study research design, using a questionnaire of leadership competences, applied to 126 trainees of the Initial Training Course for professional firefighters from Lisbon Fire Service (case study), at three different moments during a one-year training period (longitudinal study). From the obtained results, it was concluded that the leadership competences with the highest level of proficiency at the end of the course are problem solving, participatory leadership, delegative leadership, conflict management, influence by example, task orie...
