W artkule zostają omówione zmieniające się teorie przekładoznawcze, które lokują wierność tłumacz... more W artkule zostają omówione zmieniające się teorie przekładoznawcze, które lokują wierność tłumaczy w różnych elementach procesu translacyjnego. Raz wymaga się od nich wierności wobec autora tekstu źródłowego, innym razem wobec oryginału lub kolejno: czytelników pierwowzoru, kultury wyjściowej, kultury docelowej, odbiorcy przekładu, zleceniodawcy przekładu, norm docelowych itp. Raz traktuje się tłumacza jako kopistę, innym razem pozwala mu się ingerować w tekst i być jego drugim autorem (czasem ważniejszym niż twórca pierwowzoru!). Te zmieniające się normy translatoryczne są opisane w artykule z punktu widzenia etyki słowa, dlatego najbardziej uwypuklona została w nim jedna z nowszych teorii przekładu − tj.„Szkoła Manipulistów”. Od lojalności tłumacza (wobec kogo? czego?) zależy kształt przekładu, który z kolei wpływa na rzesze czytelników, ich poglądy i postawy życiowe. Norwid is a profound and difficult author. The words he uses acquire new meanings in the world of... more Norwid is a profound and difficult author. The words he uses acquire new meanings in the world of his texts. Thus the writings of this poet cannot be translated without knowledge on his works and views. Hence cooperation of good translators with norwidologists is very desirable. Such cooperation undertaken in 2006 by Danuta Borchardt (a translator) and Agata Brajerska-Mazur (a norwidologist) is described in the article. Showing the results of the work of Ms. Borchardt on selected examples from the volume Cyprian Norwid. Selected Poems, currently prepared for print by Archipelago Books, Ms Brajerska-Mazur focuses mainly on the difficulties posed by the particular texts and describes successes or failures of the translators in surmounting them. As to the quality of those translations and the usefulness of the “ten commandments” Ms. Borhardt strived to comply with, she leaves that for the readers to judge.

In order to “measure” the quality of a translation of a literary masterpiece, a critic has to compare the translation with its original and choose the best method of evaluating the translated text. The method which she proposed in this article was based on the attempt to discover thesignifi cantandthe most significant featuresof the orginal (by means ofkatenaadapted from bibliology) and finding these features in its translations. The original was the starting-point of her analysis and she demanded as much faithfulness as possible to the original. Thus she began her analysis with the examination of Norwid’s poem:Fatumusing (askatenademands) its interpretations and critics’ commentaries. First, she conducts a detailed analysis of the original, from which she isolates its dominants: features necessary to be rendered in the translation to preserve the identity of the original. On their basis she examines the fidelity and quality of the English translation by Paweł Brodowski, which – as she showed – captures the general sense and renders the imagery of the original despite the introduced unifications and transformations of the text. Subsequently, the author examines the musical execution of this translation by Czesław Niemen and thus proves that it not only brings out the features highlighted in Brodowski’s translation, but it also restores the lost meanings and the rhyming structure of the lyric poem.

The author of the essay „Loyalty in a Translator’s Work” discusses various changing translational... more The author of the essay „Loyalty in a Translator’s Work” discusses various changing translational theories which place the translator’s loyalty in different elements of the translational process. Some times loyalty towards the author of the source text is demanded of them, and other times faithfulness towards the original work or to its readers, source culture, target culture, target recipients, translation commissioner, norms of the target culture etc. is required. Some times translators are treated like mere copyists, and other times as second authors (often even more important than the creators of the original texts). The article describes these changing norms from an ethical point of view, focusing on one of the most modern theories – The Manipulation School. A translator’s loyalty (to what and whom?) influences the shape of the translation, which, in turn, affects its readers, their views and attitudes. And so, where should translators place their loyalty, to whom and to what should they be faithful? These questions require answers and answers are provided.

English translation of Norwid’s early poem Italiam! Italiam! is analysed by means of katena metho... more English translation of Norwid’s early poem Italiam! Italiam! is analysed by means of katena method and Prof. Puzynina’s assumptions. The trochaic structure of the original poem and its polysemantic meaning impede the proper selection of translation strategy. The carefully copied metrical form of the text does not exert the same effect in the target language as in the source one. The results of the analysis show that Laskowski’s translation also diverges from Norwid’s lyric in all other aspects that create the poem’s identity. Its English version is a more cheerful, less profound and one-sided copy of the original.

Summary
The author gradually comes to the assessment of the musical interpretation of Cyprian Norwid’s poem Pielgrzym. First, she conducts a detailed analysis of the original, from which she isolates its dominants: features necessary to be rendered in the translation to preserve the identity of the original. On their basis she examines the fidelity and quality of the English translation by Paweł Brodowski, which – as she showed – captures the general sense and renders the imagery of the original despite the introduced unifications and transformations of the text. Subsequently, the author examines the musical execution of this translation by Czesław Niemen and thus proves that it not only brings out the features highlighted in Brodowski’s translation, but it also restores the lost meanings and the rhyming structure of the lyric poem.

This is an introduction to the first volume (of 4 intended) containing research papers on one of ... more This is an introduction to the first volume (of 4 intended) containing research papers on one of the best Polish poets: Cyprian Kamil Norwid, which were written by distinguished Norwidologists (Miriam, Borowy, Sławińska, Sawicki, Puzynina, Gomulicki, Wyka, Błoński, Dunajski, Łapiński and many others). "A starry diamond" gives a brief description of the poet's life and work, compares his literary achievements with major forerunners of modern European poetry (e.g. Hopkins, Baudelaire, Eliot, Auden) and outlines the main assumptions of the monograph.

She pointed out six features which composed the specific quality of Norwid’s poem and therefore should be conveyed in its translation. Then she analysed Jerzy Peterkiewicz and Burns Singer’s translation of Fatum. She noticed that these translators made an assumption that the structure of the poem was most important. They maintained the rhymes of the original, but at the same time lost its brevity. In her opinion the failure of Peterkiewicz and Singer’s translation is attributable to their lack of knowledge of Norwid’s text and its interpretations. Peterkiewicz and Singer did not convey in depth any of the six features which compose the specific quality of Norwid’s poem. Thus the readers of their translation of Fate will never realize that they are dealing with a masterpiece of Polish poetry.
