Three parameters are considered for discussing this plate: iconography, manufacturing technique and provenance, and all of them are contextualised in the period of the great exhibitions of Persian Art (between the 1930s and the 1960s). The outcome of these exhibitions, besides stimulating scholarly research on previously understudied artistic productions, was the consequent rising interest by museums and private collectors in art objects from the ancient Iranian world. The introduction of possible forgeries, such as the Rashy plate, coherently fits into this increasing demand of the art market.

Whitehouse at Siraf in 1969, currently on view in the Gallery of Islamic Art at The British Museum in London, which has not yet been fully studied. On the basis of both its decorative and technical aspects, as well as the context in which it was found, its manufacturing likely relates to the main reconstruction works-carried out at Siraf after the devastating earthquake of 977-characterised by the introduction of a new local moulded stucco production.

Research paper thumbnail of Panel: A blooming caliphate: Abbasid stucco corpora reconsidered (8th-9th c.)

4ème Congrès du GIS MOMM, June 28, 2021

During the early Abbasid period (8th-9th centuries), architectural decoration is largely dominate... more During the early Abbasid period (8th-9th centuries), architectural decoration is largely dominated by extensive use of carved stucco. Yet many of these stuccoes have been barely studied. Over the last few years, several individual investigations have focused on stucco corpora retrieved from key archaeological sites spanning from the Mediterranean to Central Asia, and have provided new data on hitherto unpublished materials. By presenting some of these ongoing studies, this panel aims to explore new evidence from a broad comparative perspective. Despite their geographical distance, stuccoes originated from the Syrian-Iraqi region (Madinat al-Far, Samarra) and from the Persianate world (Isfahan, Balkh, Samarkand) share in many respects a common artistic language. Through a comparative approach, we propose to question the chronology of these corpora and the circulation of models and craftsmen across the Abbasid caliphate.
