The same homily is known in Coptic thanks to a complete Bohairic manuscript now kept at the Vatican Library, and some leaves of another Sahidic codex now preserved in Paris. In this article, the text of the Sahidic version of Basil's homily from CLM 562 will be partly confronted with that of the Bohairic version.

After some initial study by a student (P. N. M. van Arendonk) who explored the fragments’ provenance in an exam paper, two of them were published by his teacher Rob Salomons and the Amsterdam-based papyrologist Klaas Worp in 1985, whereas the other five have remained unpublished until now. In the context of a Radboud Summer School in Nijmegen in 2021, we studied the remaining fragments, and the current article presents editions of 5 further fragments (P.Noviom. inv. 1, 3, 5, 6 (descr.), and 7), prepared by the international group of graduate student participants under our supervision, as well as that of Daniela Colomo.

Thebes during the Byzantine era. An attempt will be made to reconstruct
some of the cultural features of this specific context by means of a methodology
that combines a historical-cultural perspective – that always has archaeological
contexts in mind – with the reasoning on statistical data relating to
various aspects concerning the Theban literary manuscripts. What is most
interesting is to investigate how the contribution of such a methodology can
help in the reconstruction of the different cultural contexts responsible for
the production, circulation, and conservation of literary manuscripts in Late
Antique Thebes. This, in light of a recently renewed interest in this context
that – even if not peripheral – certainly was not so central geographically
and culturally in the broader milieu of Christian Egypt.

The Theban area represents an exemplary case, because of the numerous vestiges of the Pharaonic era and of the dynamic environment that in the Byzantine period characterized the ancient capital, especially in its western part. The Theban Christian communities were able to maintain a close and functional relationship with those who were the reference points in the visual and symbolic horizon of the inhabitants of the necropolis. Hermitages, monasteries, topoi and laurae were installed in correspondence of ancient tombs and temples. Therefore, it was not the places that changed, but partly their use. This article aims to outline some significant cases of re-appropriation of spaces, underlining the ways in which each of the communities considered was able to relate in an original way with the archaeological contexts of which it took possession.

Plato, too, makes several references to manteis and to the realm of divination. In general, the dialogues devote considerable attention to key elements and figures of traditional culture, with a view to either refute or integrate them into Plato's philosophical thought. Plato's re-evaluation and regulation of the irrational fits into this pattern, something that applies to poetry and, indeed, to the sphere of mantike (cf. especially the role of mania and its link with manteia in the Phaedrus). Intriguingly, Socrates is sometimes described as a mantis and as someone interested in divination and oracles (esp. Apology, Phaedo and Phaedrus), while the verb manteuomai seems to assume new connotations within the philosophical discussion (cf. Republic). On the other hand, Plato relates mantike to other characters who are definitely un-Socratic, such as Euthyphro and Anitus, as well as other anonymous ones (cf. Philebus). Despite an undifferentiated terminology, two different kinds of mantike, which should not be confused, can be seen at work in the dialogues. This paper aims to highlight what defines Socratic mantike against the one practiced by Socrates' contemporaries. More specifically it argues that "philosophical" mantike is closely related to musical possession and Apollo's worship and bears on Plato's 'silenic' portrayal of Socrates: Silenus' ominous revelations as found in the Greek tradition are integral to Plato's characterization of Socrates.
