In this essay, we will review the positions among scholars and the same Herodotean chapters to suggest an alternative explanation. Then, reading some battle of the 5th and 4th centuries, we will advance an interpretation of the deployment process that is workable with cultural settings and tactics

Chapter 11, the book's last, examines how former soldiers very often sought careers in other uniformed services, thereby continuing their role as some of the most foundational agents of British rule. There is an excellent "Conclusion", and in the appendix, a number of biographies are provided-representing military service in di ferent periods and in di ferent places. Stapleton shows how in the second half of the nineteenth century, a number of separate and locally recruited British colonial paramilitary formations emerged in West Africa to serve as the coercive arm of the growing British presence along the coast. He also provides answers to several important historical questions, including the way in which precolonial concepts or traditions of warfare in uenced how the West African colonial soldiers fought. From Stapleton's study it is clear that Britain's West African army represented a complex, ambiguous and constantly changing organization, and that this a fected the experiences of its locally recruited soldiers, who also played a role in shaping this institution. The book is based on sound methodological principles, and painstaking archival research, both in the United Kingdom, and in West Africa-where state archives unfortunately show signs of neglect. The comprehensive source list (pp. 353-375) shows both the width and depth of the excellent research that was done. There are ten photographs and other illustrations (pp. 157-166), as well as an index (pp. 377-390). West African Soldiers in Britain's Colonial Army (1860-1960) is an in-depth analysis of a complex aspect of the British Army's history, and is a worthwhile addition to the historiography of Britain's army, its colonial history, as well as the history of Africa. The book deserves to be read and debated by a large audience.

By reconsidering this privileged bond and its repercussions, it will be possible to formulate hypotheses regarding Decelea’s role during the final phase of the Peloponnesian War. A historical-anthropological reading of the events in Decelea offers insights to examine the phenomenon of enemy territory ravages from a perspective that transcends purely economic considerations

The alleged historian’s exile after this event strained the judgment of scholars, who interpreted Amphipolis’ account as an apology: some of them accused Thucydides of lying or altering the narrative in his interest. The present article provides an overview of the fall of Amphipolis, enlightening the specific actions of Brasidas and the circumstances within the city. In the Thucydidean narrative, these are the main factors that determined not only Brasidas’ success but also the difficulties of the ultimate defence.

After a concise report regarding the relationship between the Plataeans and the Thebans from 431 to 429, we analyse each stage of the siege from a technical outlook beginning from the ramp, moving on to the battering-rams and the use of the highly flammable mixture, finishing off with the double circumvallation. Despite the fact that the siege was managed by the Spartans (notoriously inept and amateurish in this field), they appeared really skilled: we advance some hypothesis about the origin of this proficiency
