Translation has certainly contributed to the spread of French feminist thought around the world. ... more Translation has certainly contributed to the spread of French feminist thought around the world. There are, however, translations which do not seem to have contributed significantly to the spread of this thought in Poland. This is the case of Elisabeth Badinter’s essay, L’amour en plus: histoire de l’amour maternel (XVIIe – XXe siècle), published in 1980, which sparked controversy in France. According to the author, the maternal instinct is a social and cultural construct. L’amouren plus was a success and
it has been translated into a total of 28 languages. The Polish translation of this work, Historia miłości macierzyńskiej, appeared in 1998, 18 years after the original was published. However, as our study shows, Badinter’s thought is hardly present in Polish works on feminism. Thus, translation does not always guarantee the circulation of the ideas of the original work in another culture or the love of foreign readers.

Due to many cultural aspects that can be found in the novel Un roman français by Frédéric Beigbed... more Due to many cultural aspects that can be found in the novel Un roman français by Frédéric Beigbeder and its transfer to another context, we can expect significant differences between the reception of the original book and the reception of its translation. The purpose of this paper is to verify this hypothesis through an analysis of the reception of the original text and its translation. The analysis of the reviews of a novel and its translation, including reviews by professional critics (in the press) and non-specialist readers (on blogs and webpages which associate readers) show us significant differences in the reception of the novel in France and
Poland. This novel, after translation and displacement to a Polish (cultural) literary space has a different reception – much more positive than in France. It appears that it is a result of a different status of the author in both countries: in France Beigbeder is perceived more as a public figure than a writer. In Poland he is known for his novels.
