The current study looks into the reasons and perspectives students have about the use of their fi... more The current study looks into the reasons and perspectives students have about
the use of their first language in English classrooms. It analyzes their opinions on
different issues connected to first language use. The analysis for this paper was
conducted on data from an online survey and follow-up interviews based on 51 total
participants. The results showed that students used their first language for a variety of
reasons. The amount of first language used also differed. The results also showed that
patterns emerged when considering the participants’ language backgrounds, age, and
the English language proficiency level. The results of this study will help teachers and
students understand the reasons students have for using their first language in English
classrooms. By knowing these reasons, students may be able to eliminate them and
eventually improve the English language learning process. Teachers can also use the
results to modify their classroom management to reduce the amount and frequency for
first language use. To sum up, the research showed that students have a variety of
reasons for and opinions about why they use theirfirst language in their English
classrooms, and that usage may be affected by a number of variables that need further
research and study.

Taking into account severa1 limitations of communicative language teaching (CLT), this paper call... more Taking into account severa1 limitations of communicative language teaching (CLT), this paper calls for the need to consider research on language use and learning through communication as a basis for language teaching. It will be argued that a reflective approach towards language teaching and learning might be generated, which is explained in terms of the need to develop a context-sensitive pedagogy and in terms of teachers' and learners' development.

The main objective of this study is to explore different perspectives of successful students on r... more The main objective of this study is to explore different perspectives of successful students on reading English Literature texts. The perspectives cover on students’ attitudes on reading Literature texts, the challenges, strategies and how they overcome their challenges. Besides, this study is also conducted to get the source of motivation of students when they read English Literature texts which were considered by them as ‘boring’. This study was carried out in a secondary school, Sekolah Menengah Paya Kamunting, located at Kubang Pasu District. Data were collected from eight participants from Form Five Arts and Science class. The participants were selected based on their excellent performance in English subject by their teacher. Multiple interviews were done in eliciting their perspectives. To analyze the interview data, the data were categorized and been coded. In addition, themes were created based from the categorization. The findings indicate that successful students always create a positive mindset and always find ways to overcome their challenges. Successful students significantly improve themselves to be a good reader and always use the right resource to understand literature texts. The different perspectives from the students on reading English Literature texts can be guidance to students who are struggling to read and unable to give responses based on the texts.
