It is a basic tool of education whether formal or informal. Reading is a receptive skill, which involves the ability to meaningfully interpret or decode written or graphic symbols of language. Through reading, the hidden treasure of knowledge is unfolded; knowledge is gained thereby empowering individuals to share and also participate in the world’s universal culture and civilization. It is, therefore, of paramount importance that every one including children imbibe reading culture so as to unlock the world, treasure of knowledge. This study is of great importance as today's children spend hours trapped under derivative distractions such a television, computers, and associated technologies targeted to children. It becomes then imperative to reawaken reading culture among the children who are faced with competing leisure time choices. One of the ways of helping children to imbibe reading culture is to get them reading ready. Th...

These aspects of knowledge are essential for teachers to deliver lessons effectively and efficiently to students. Deficiency in any of these aspects of knowledge is bound to bear on teachers’ effectiveness, and consequently reflect on students’ learning and learning outcome. Secondary school students’ underachievement in chemistry has often been associated with teachers’ poor knowledge of the teaching curriculum on which students’ learning is based. This study set out to ascertain how knowledgeable teachers are about the chemistry curriculum which they implement in schools. The study shows that about 80% of teachers are knowledgeable about the various dimensions of the new ...

These are challenges that must be surmounted, in order to ensure that only relevant educational software packages are used in the school system. This paper reports a study in which an instrument for determining the quality of teacher-made computer instructional software package was developed and tested. The study also showed how teachers could determine the quality, not only of their own made instructional software packages, but also those commercially produced and supplied for use in the school system.

However, experiential evidence shows that teachers do not use computers in teaching chemistry concepts, even as specifically recommended by the curriculum. Reasons for this are often attributed to absence of computers and ICT facilities in schools, teachers' lack of necessary skills and poor knowledge of how to use the computer and software packages. There are cases however, where the facilities are available in schools and teachers have basic knowledge and skills needed to use the computer to facilitate the teaching-learning process. Expectation has been that the situation in such schools would be different from the rest of the schools, where the facilities are lacking and teachers do not have the necessary skills. This study set out to investigate the attitude of Nigerian secondary school chemistry teachers towards the use of computer instructional software package in teac...

It is a basic tool of education whether formal or informal. Reading is a receptive skill, which involves the ability to meaningfully interpret or decode written or graphic symbols of language. Through reading, the hidden treasure of knowledge is unfolded; knowledge is gained thereby empowering individuals to share and also participate in the world's universal culture and civilization. One of the ways of helping children to imbibe reading culture is to get them re...

As a strategy to achieve some of the objectives of Nigeria's National Information Technology ... more As a strategy to achieve some of the objectives of Nigeria's National Information Technology (IT) policy (1988), the education system in Nigeria at all levels is being restructured to respond to pedagogical needs of 21 st century learning in which computer plays a crucial role. Some of the objectives of Nigeria's IT policy (1988) are to: empower Nigerians to participate in software and IT development; encourage local production and manufacture of IT components in a competitive manner and to integrate IT into the mainstream of education and training. Nigeria's education system needs relevant educational software packages at this present stage of the nation's development. It is therefore pertinent that those aspiring to design and develop software packages for the Nigerian education system should be well trained and equipped, in order to appreciate those inputs needed to be made to produce educational software packages that satisfy the nation's need for relevant an...

To acquire these special skills and knowledge, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) comes to the fore to drive the education system. In Nigeria, the National Policy on Education recognises the importance and place of ICT in ‘advancing knowledge and skills in the modern world’, but serious effort to provide ‘necessary infrastructure and training for the integration of ICT in the school system’ as stated in the policy is yet to be seen. Most public and private primary and secondary schools lack the basic infrastructure, and teachers are yet to be ICT literate. Relevant educational software packages, especially for education in chemistry are scarce. There is need, as part of the chemistry teacher education programme, to include courses in ICT that will enable the chemistry teachers to construct teacher-made education...
