Su visibilidad no fue la misma que la de sus compañeros sacerdotes salesianos en esta tarea. Nos proponemos efectuar un análisis del registro con una nueva mirada historiográfica de género

It analyses the apparent scarcity of works related to the subject among the references provided by the summary bibliographies on the country's indigenous languages produced during those years. Through the analysis of different types of sources, we describe the main approaches adopted by the linguistic and ethnological studies in those decades in two research groups: actors from the La Plata Museum and territorial intellectuals from the Patagonian area. This allows us to observe how was alternatively privileged the erudite documentary approach, based on evaluation Jesuit and contemporary trans-Andean materials as referents, and the empirical analysis of field data.

One of the lexical lists was partially published in 1913, while the other one remained unpublished. This article provides access to this source, and we link it with the published register as well as with other lexical lists that were recorded in those years by other governmental, academic and missionary agents interested in the subject. We also describe some contextual aspects of the situation where the annotation was made, and among them, the biographical trajectories of the persons who participated in that event. Additionally, we analyze the vocabulary structure and content that based in the elicitation instrument proposed by Georg von der Gabelentz is to be used in colonial contexts.

In this work we are considering the diachrony of Mapuche-Spanish language contact and the functions that the vernacular language bears with as well as the situations in which it is preferably spoken. We also look into the sociolinguistic representations that speakers and not-speakers get about this minoritary language, since that, although it is positively appraised, its transmission is actually being abandoned by the vernacular speakers
In the late nineteenth century, the field of studies focusing on the indigenous languages spoken ... more In the late nineteenth century, the field of studies focusing on the indigenous languages spoken in Argentina began to be more accurately defined. The collection of linguistic materials and the attempts to systematize them as grammatical or lexicographic resources were integrated in a programme that involved national scientific associations and the international academic world. This article focuses on the process of documentation of the indigenous languages that were spoken in Tierra del Fuego (Selknam, Haush, Yagan and Alakaluf), analysing the most common data collection strategy, i.e. using vocabularies or lexical lists. The analysis considers the types of data collected and the semantic fields selected, placing the vocabularies – often produced in the context of religious, scientific, military or government missions by actors who had been not trained for the task – in a continuum from standardised transnational formats to semi-structured presentations to seemingly random lists...

Spegazzini (1858-1926) joined the Italo-Argentinian expedition led by Giacomo Bove to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. He collected Fuegian language materials near Ushuaia in 1882, some of which were later published in different publications. In this article, we present a manuscript entitled “Ona-Yahgna-Alacaluf vocabulary by Dr. Spegazzini” that was copied by Samuel Lafone Quevedo in 1899 and was found in his personal archive. It consists of 42 pages that include vocabulary and phrasal forms, mostly in three columns. Each contains data from the Ona, Yahgan and Alacaluf languages. We focus on the Ona data collected by Spegazzini, (which are actually not in Selknam but in Haush, the least known language of the Chonan linguistic family) which have remained unpublished until now, and considerably increase our knowledge of this language. A better knowledge of Haush will, in turn, expand the historical-comparative research into the C...

From a present-day perspective, early descriptions and documentations show some shortcomings (viz., they are often fragmentary and biased in several respects), but they nonetheless constitute a trove of valuable resources for later work and ongoing revitalization endeavors. Current documentary work is now more balanced in terms of Himmelmann's (1998) three-parameter typology (i.e., it pays close attention to communicative events of different kinds of modality, spontaneity, and naturalness), employs audio and video recordings, and takes copyright, access, and sustainability issues seriously. It is also more collaborative and empowering vis-a-vis the role played by indigenous collaborators ...
