It spread to Indonesia in the late 1990s and, since then, has attracted thousands of followers throughout the country. Although certainly not the largest, it is one of the most active Islamic groups propagating the Sufi message to the public. Its steady growth in the last 15 years reveals some important features of contemporary religious life in Indonesia. By employing social movement theories, this study attempts to illuminate the intricate relationship between piety and Islamic activism in contemporary Indonesia. This thesis reveals that Sufism still has a strong power to shape the nature of Muslim piety and influence public morality in Indonesia. The struggle for Islam is not targeting wide-ranging social reforms or the secular state, but it is primarily about the transformation of everyday life and small-scale changes affecting religious beliefs and rituals of individual Muslims. In a democratic context, this transformation contributes to the creation of a cosmopolitan pietism that potentially promotes a ‘civil Islam’ that is neither secular nor Islamist in nature. This study also demonstrates that cosmopolitan pietism is not a given condition because it is dependent on various external factors. Indonesian Muslims have been and will likely remain fragmented along different pious orientations. Sufism contributes to the growth of authoritarian pietism characterised by religious and political conservatism. This conservatism has uncompromising attitude toward secular virtues and unambiguous political stance over the political establishment.

This political Islamism aspires to the continuing Islamization, implementation of sharia, and even the establishment of a global caliphate. Emerging Islamist forces such as FPI, Jamaah Tarbiyah, and HTI along with the conservative turn, therefore, pose the normative-political challenges to both republican and liberal notions of citizenship. This paper deals with the question of religion and citizenship under the democratic space in contemporary Indonesia. By examining three variants of Islamic citizenship, religion vigilant, pragmatic, and rejectionist citizenship, this paper tries to address the following question: to what extent Islamism challenges the discourse of citizenship in contemporary Indonesia? We argue that while Islamism apparently rises and gains followers, the state and mainstream Muslim organizations (NU and Muhammadiyah), and t...

Canonical traditions and classical Islamic texts that prophesied prophesy the imminent coming of YaumulQiyamah (Armageddon) and their popular reception among Indonesian Muslims reveal how religious texts still have a powerful influence in shaping the way Indonesian Muslims perceive the world and how they deal with it.This paper seeks to address continuing scholarly debate on the interconnection of Islamic tradition and modernity in contemporary Indonesia. Focusing on the 2017 local election in Brebes, Central Java, this article confirms previous scholarly works' findings of widespread patronage distribution and the impact of rising religious conservatism on electoral competition. However, this paper shows that piety and patronage politics neither necessarily maintain oligarchic rule nor provoke intolerance and violence. The case of the electoral competition in Brebes reveals that Islamic organisations in Indonesia are not immune from electoral politics, and due to institutional weaknesses of most political parties in Indonesia, will likely remain important political players by mobilising support in elections at both the local and national level. In a broader context, Islamic mobilisation in local elections in Indonesia helps understand the emergence of pious democracy in democratic Muslim-majority countries.

Referring to and modifying from the current scholarly works on the coalition making and politico-ideological orientation of political party in Indonesia, it offers four typologies of intra party coalition which are small ideological coalition, small pragmatic coalition, grand ideological coalition, and grand pragmatic coalition. The case of coalition making in the local direct election in 21 districts/municipalities in Central Java Province reveals that political party is a powerful and irreplaceable political player in democratic setting. As a formal political institution, it is and will remain considerably influential in nominating and endorsing candidates to run in the local direct election.

The modes of labor control are applied by imposing politics of discourse, fear, and threats of violence. In responding to this hostile circumstance and in order to survive, the plantation workers continuously develop "conventional" and "unconventional" resistance to the state and capital. 2 However, this resistance meets ideological constraints as well as structural problems.
