The Language Attitudes of Minangkabau People Towards Minangkabau and Indonesian Language

This paper examines the language attitudes of Minangkabau people toward Minangkabau language (MIN) and Indonesian (BI) in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were collected in the form of questionnaires, in-depth interviews and participant observation with a sample of 200 Adult respondents in six research areas. This research uses a Likert scale with the categories classified into five alternatives (1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Uncertain, 4 = Agree, and 5= strongly agree) and there are some tables analyzed based on yes/no questions, no=0 and yes=1. There are twelve questions on the questionnaire pertaining to the attitudes of adults. The results show that the adult attitudes can be classified into three categories, (1) positive; (2) negative; and (3) ambivalent attitudes. The third category is dominant. The Attitudes of Junior High School Students Towards Indonesia Language

Aims of the research are to ascertain: (1) the belief and knowledge of Junior High School students towards Bahasa Indonesia; (2) the assessment of Junior High School students towards Bahasa Indonesia; and (3) the trend of Junior High School Students in acting by using Bahasa Indonesia. The research samples were 120 students of public Junior High School in Surakarta with closed questionnaire. The validity of instrument applied to construct and empirical validity by doing the estimate applying the formula of Product Moment Correlation whereas the reliability of the instrument was assessed by using the calculation of Alpha. Data analysis was conducted descriptively through the following steps of (1) coding the data; (2) tabulating data to calculate the frequency of the answers; (3) calculating the percentage of each answer; and (4) interpreting or giving meaning. It can be concluded that students of Junior high School: 1) have positive belief towards Bahasa Indonesia, 2) have positive assessment towards Bahasa Indonesia, and 3) have a tendency to take positive action by using Bahasa Indonesia.
Students’ Attitudes Towards Indonesian Varieties and Other Languages: A Case Study in Tangerang

This study investigates Indonesian-speaking students' attittudes towards Standard Indonesian Colloquial Jakarta Indonesian, regional language, and foreign language. Participants in this study are students of secondary-and high schools (N=745) who live in Tangerang City and South Tangerang, neighboring areas of Jakarta, where the inhabitants are mainly multilinguals. Data of this study were collected from questionnaires, distributed at schools. We investigated their pride of the observed languages, the importance of the languages, and their intention to improve the languages. Findings in this study suggest that the attitude towards these languages has a relation with the social functions which mainly governed by language policy in educational setting.
Language attitude towards English and Javanese by young people in Surabaya
ABSTRACT Attitude to language is a construct that explains linguistic behavior in particular. It may be positive or negative as well as instrumental or integrative. It varies from favorably to unfavorably or vice-versa in language learning and acquisition, choice and use of language in different domains and hence, it is necessary in the question of survival and development of a particular language and in the chances of success in language policy implementation. The study aims to find out the young people’s attitude towards English and Javanese and their reasons to have such attitude. The study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The data are collected by questionnaires, interviews, and observation. According to Lambert, attitudes consist of three components: the cognitive, affective and conative components. The theory is supported by Gardner who considered attitudes as components of motivation in language learning. According to him, “motivation ... refers to the combination of effort plus desire to achieve the goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning the language”. The research shows that the respondents use Javanese because it is a tradition that is needed in social intercourse in a particular society and use English as the foreign language in their daily conversation. Regarding to the respondent’s attitudes, the findings suggest that people have positive attitude towards English and Javanese. This is attributed to the fact that respondents are instrumentally motivated to learn towards both languages. Keywords: atittude, components, motivation

This study aims to scrutinize the attitude of Javanese youth towards their use of local language. There are two research questions proposed in this study such as namely: 1) how is the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language, 2) what are the factors that effect on their attitudes. The objectives of this study are to define the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language and to discover why they are behaving so. Furthermore, this study adopted qualitative method applying descriptive analysis and selected the students of English Department of Batch 2014 Batch in Brawijaya University as the participants. This article reports a study of high school students’ attitudes in Indonesia towards English as a foreign language. The attitudes in this study particularly was appertained to the students’ interest towards learning English as a language; their motivation to master it; their difficulty in learning English grammar; and also the importance of English for their future. Students from two different classes i.e. science class and social class were involved in this study. A questionnaire was administered to 72 students, n = 40 from science class and n = 32 from social class. It was found that the students’ interest of both classes in learning English was not statistically different. They consider that learning English is quite interesting for the students in both classes. Meanwhile in the matter of their motivation, difficulty in learning English grammar, and also their consideration in viewing the importance of English, the results show statistically significant differences between the students in both classes.
This research applied a mixed methods design aiming to explore, describe and explain attitudes and behavior of Indonesian language and literature education study program students of universities in Makassar towards Indonesian language. The data on language attitudes and behavior was collected using a test technique in the form of questionnaires for attitudes and covert behavior, and a non-test technique taken from recording, notes and interviews for overt language behavior of the students. The Relation Between Students' Attitudes Toward Foreign Language and Foreign Language Achievement -
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between students’ attitudes towards foreign language and foreign language achievement. The participants are last-year-students in the high schools in Afşin and Elbistan, K.Maraş. The reason why we chose the last-year high school students was to identify their attitudes towards language in the beginning of their career through university. Language Attitude Scale (LAS) -Likert Type scale in five gradations- was administered to all students to see if there was any relationship between their attitude and success. The attitude scale was developed by Saracaloğlu (1992), (_= 0,96). 421 students’ responses were studied. ANOVA, t, Scheffe and Tukey HSD tests were used in analyzing the data. This study indicates that there is a significant relation between student academic achievement and student attitude towards foreign language but statistically no relation between gender and success. In the light of this study, it is possible to put forward that female students tend to have more positive attitudes than male students.
Undergraduate Students’ Attitudes Toward Indonesian Language in Higher Education

This study aimed to examine students’ attitudes toward Indonesian language from public and private universities in Indonesia. Additionally, this study examined what aspects are considered unfavorable or adverse from students' attitudes towards the Indonesian language. The online questionnaires with 30 statements were used to collect the data from 812 students from public universities and 705 students from private universities. The instrument's validity was carried out by two methods of testing, namely the content validity test and the testing. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics with Independent T-test sample test. The findings revealed that students' attitudes towards Indonesian both from state universities and private universities were both in a good category, and there was no difference in the results of the different test attitudes with a significance value of 0.970. Language attitudes are one area in sociolinguistics that needs to be explored. This research highlights the language attitudes of Indonesian language teachers and lecturers in Banda Aceh city toward their own mother tongue, the Acehnese language. This paper aimed to figure out the attitudes of teachers as native speakers of the Acehnese language and their language of preference in the educational context.
