A Cross Sectional Study Evaluating Internet Addiction and Depression Levels among Medical and Engineering Students of Bengaluru City

Introduction: The internet, aptly called information superhighway is widely used throughout the world. Medical and engineering students are a particularly vulnerable group and thus prone to depression and internet addiction. The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Internet addiction, to assess the levels of depression, anxiety and stress among medical and engineering students and to correlate the level of internet addiction with depression levels. Internet addiction (IA) is an emerging phenomenon among the youth of India. It has been found to be associated with mental health problems. This study was therefore conducted to find out the burden of IA among college students in Delhi, its risk factors and association with depression, anxiety, and stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted, with face-to-face interviews, among the nonprofessional college students of the University of Delhi. Simple random sampling was used to select the students from the list obtained from the three colleges. The Relationship between Internet Addiction and Anxiety among students of University of Sargodha

The objective of this study was to investigate not only the prevalence of internet addiction among the male and female students in the University of Sargodha but also the relationship between internet addiction and anxiety level of students. There were 300 students, from Masters’ classes, as sample, selected through cluster sampling. Internet Addiction Scale (I.A.S) and Beck Anxiety Scale were used as assessment tools for data collection. Data was analyzed using mean, standard deviation, T-test and regression analysis. The results showed that prevalence of internet is more in male students than female students. Regression analysis showed a positive and significant relation between internet addiction and anxiety level among University students.

A study of prevalance of internet addiction and its association with depression and anxiety among medical students

Introduction: With the advent of technology, medical education has been transformed to the extent that internet has become a necessary part of it. The use of Internet ranges from purely academic purposes like acquisition of knowledge and research to completely leisure activities. While proper use of internet has its own benefits, problematic internet use can disrupt occupational and social life. It has been reported to be allied with anxiety disorders, introversion, pathological gambling, personality disorders, bipolar disorder and depression in young people. DSM-V classifies Internet Gaming Disorder in Section III and in the beta draft of ICD-11 it is included as a diagnosis under disorders due to addictive behaviours (6C51). Aim: To study the prevalence of internet addiction and its association with Depression and Anxiety among Medical Students. Materials and Methods: Cross sectional study involving 700 medical students who were using internet for more than 6 months duration was conducted. A pretested self-reported questionnaire, Young’s Internet Addiction Test, Beck’s Anxiety Inventory and Beck’s Depression scale were administered. Statistical analysis was done using latest IBM SPSS 2.0 Software. Results: Majority of the students 51.8 % belonged to 21-25 years age group. The prevalence of Internet Addiction was found out to be 19.1% with moderate addiction of 17.4%, and severe addiction of 1.7%. Among the internet addicts, 58.9% reported anxiety symptoms and 32.8% scored high on Becks Depression Scale. Conclusion: Around 1/5th of our sample had internet addiction which had positive correlation with Depression & Anxiety, indicating need for preventive measures like proper education, support groups and physical activities etc.

Prevalence of Internet Addiction and its association with depression, anxiety and stress among Medical Students in Malaysia

Background: Using the internet excessively by students is known to cause internet addiction (IA) which may result in negative consequences such as decline in academic performance, social isolation, and emotional disturbances. This study aims to assess IA and its association with emotional disturbances among medical students. Methods: A sample of 268 medical students participated in this study. Internet addiction was assessed using Malay version of Chen Internet addiction Scale while the prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety and stress were assessed by Depression Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Results: The rate of IA among students was 22.8%. No significant differences in terms of gender and other socio-demographic factors. PSYCHIATRIC ASPECTS OF INTERNET ADDICTION IN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN INDIA: A META-ANALYSIS

Background and objectives. Internet addiction (IA) is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges or behaviours regarding computer use and internet access that lead to functional impairment or distress. Aim of the current research has been the analysis of the effect size of the multiple variables responsible for internet addiction in medical students. Methods. The current study is a cross-sectional and descriptive co-relational design. The opportunistic sample included 666 undergraduate medical students enrolled in the Medicine Bachelor and Bachelor of Science (MBBS) in a major medical university in India. Data analysis included meta-analysis for the coefficient of heterogeneity I 2 , Z-statistics and the effect size Cohen's d. Results. High effect size (d>1.0) were shown by the prevalence of IA (d=5.40), gender (d=4.85), area of residence (d=2.60), level of depression (d=1.79), level of anxiety (d=2.99) and level of stress (d=1.98). The correlation of IA scale with psychiatric scale also showed a high effect size (d=2.40). IA presents with higher effects size in female students with moderate levels of anxiety. Discussion. Overall, our results support previous findings of a strong relationship between Internet addiction and psychological states such as depression, anxiety and stress.

Evaluation of Correlation between Internet Addiction and Psychological Status among First Year Medical Students

Background: There has been exponential increase in usage of internet in our daily routine, which can foster addictive behaviors. Adolescents and teenagers are vulnerable for such addictive behaviors, which can provide them a way of escape from stress, which they encounter during their prolonged academic career. Objective: To determine the internet usage pattern, assess internet addiction and its correlation with psychological status among first year medical students. Internet Addiction Disorder and Its Pathogenicity to Psychological Distress and Depression among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study in Bangladesh

Worldwide Internet addiction is a newly emerging mental health and social issue among the youths causing neurological complications, psychological disturbances and social problems. Internet addicts make the Internet urgency more vital than family, friends and work. Several studies exposed that anxiety, backache, blurred vision, dry eyes, headache, sleep disturbance, depression, poor academic performance etc. are results of Internet addiction. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the Internet addiction as well as its psychological distress and depression among university undergraduate students of Bangladesh. The study was conducted among 475 students selected from five universities of Bangladesh from July 2015 to September 2015. The selected universities were Southeast University, University of South Asia, Primeasia University, Northern University Bangladesh and State University of Bangladesh. Each willing participants were subject of this study and they shared their opinion. The Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-2) were used to determine Internet addiction, psychological distress and depression respectively. Results revealed that the university students showed varying degrees of Internet addiction, psychological distress and depression with respect to sex, age, year of study and residential status. The data revealed that 47.7% (127) male and 44.5% (93) female students showed severe Internet addiction followed by 27.1% (72) male and 33.9% (71) female students showed moderate Internet addiction, while 20.7% (55) male and 7.7% (16) female students had mild Internet addiction.
