Background: In recent times internet addiction has become a leading cause of many personality and psychiatric disorders. Introduction: The internet, aptly called information superhighway is widely used throughout the world. Medical and engineering students are a particularly vulnerable group and thus prone to depression and internet addiction. Assessment of status of internet addiction and related factors among medical students of Rajkot city

Introduction: The internet is an exciting new medium that is evolving into an essential part of everyday life all over the world. It has opened a new domain in social interactivity with the promise of increasing efficiency and worldwide understanding. Though devised primarily to facilitate research, information seeking, interpersonal communication and business transactions, for some internet users it has become the central focus of their lives and a temptation that is hard to resist. Materials and Methods: It was a cross sectional study done in PDU Government Medical College, Rajkot from April 2013 to June 2013. The study included 212 medical students of 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd year MBBS who were using internet daily and consented to participate. Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT20) was used to study the level of internet addiction. Results : Out of 212medical students, 143 (67.5%) were males and 69 (32.5%) were females and the age range was 17 to 25 years. YIAT20 showed 1 (0.5%) had the scoring in the range of 70-100, 61 (28.8%) had the scoring in the range of 40-60 and 150 (70.7%) had the scoring 20-39. There was significant difference for level of internet addiction and gender, year of study, duration of internet usage and length of internet usage. Conclusion : The level of internet addiction is high among the medical students, watch over the use of internet by parents and colleges necessary to prevent and stop emerging internet addiction.

PSYCHIATRIC ASPECTS OF INTERNET ADDICTION IN MEDICAL STUDENTS IN INDIA: A META-ANALYSIS

Background and objectives. Internet addiction (IA) is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges or behaviours regarding computer use and internet access that lead to functional impairment or distress. Aim of the current research has been the analysis of the effect size of the multiple variables responsible for internet addiction in medical students. Methods. The current study is a cross-sectional and descriptive co-relational design. The opportunistic sample included 666 undergraduate medical students enrolled in the Medicine Bachelor and Bachelor of Science (MBBS) in a major medical university in India. Data analysis included meta-analysis for the coefficient of heterogeneity I 2 , Z-statistics and the effect size Cohen's d. Results. High effect size (d>1.0) were shown by the prevalence of IA (d=5.40), gender (d=4.85), area of residence (d=2.60), level of depression (d=1.79), level of anxiety (d=2.99) and level of stress (d=1.98). The correlation of IA scale with psychiatric scale also showed a high effect size (d=2.40). IA presents with higher effects size in female students with moderate levels of anxiety. Discussion. Overall, our results support previous findings of a strong relationship between Internet addiction and psychological states such as depression, anxiety and stress.

A cross-sectional study on internet addiction among medical students

ABSTRACT: Background: Proliferation of the internet has provided better opportunities for communication, information and social interaction. The excessive undisciplined use by individuals has led to the emergence of the concept of internet addiction. Psychological and environmental factors in the lives of college students may leave them disproportionately vulnerable to Internet addiction. The The main objective of this study was to measure prevalence of internet addiction and the usage pattern among undergraduate medical students. Materials & Methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out among 95 undergraduate students of II MBBS, selected by simple random sampling, in Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, from January to February, 2016. A 20 item Young’s Internet Addiction test which is a Likert scale based interview schedule was used to measure the prevalence of internet addiction. Data was entered in MS Excel 2007 and analyzed. Chisquare test was applied and p value < 0.05 considered significant. Results: Among the 95 study subjects, 62.2% were males and 37.8% were females. Males were more addicted to internet than females. The prevalence of internet addiction among the study subjects in the present study was 52.63% mild, 24.21% moderate, while 23.16% students reported normal internet usage. It was found that severity of internet addiction is inversely proportional to academic performance. Conclusion: Internet addiction is a growing health problem among medical students, hence necessary preventive and therapeutic interventions are vital to promote healthy and safe usage of Internet. Evaluation of internet addiction status and effects among medical students

Background: The explosive growth of the internet in the last decade has had a huge impact on communication and interpersonal behavior. More and more students are addicted to internet, while spending lots of time surfing on the internet. The present study was conducted considering the above facts, with the objective to assess the level of internet addiction and effects of it among the medical students. Methods: It was a cross sectional study conducted among medical students of PDU Govt. Medical College, Rajkot. Total 212 students were included in the study that were using internet daily and consented to participate. Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT20) was used to study the level of internet addiction. Results: Almost one third (35.4%) students were using internet for more than 2 years. Almost half (48.1%) students were using internet for more than 2 hours per day. Young's Internet Addiction Test showed that 61 (28.8%) students had scoring in the range of 50-79 (frequent problem due to internet usage). There was significant difference for level of internet addiction and problems of change of lifestyle change in dietary behavior and sleep distribution. Conclusions: This study's results imply that Internet addiction is a prevalent public health issue varied pattern of internet use. Close observation over the use of internet and changes due to it among students are required by parents and colleges to stop emerging internet addiction.

Background: Internet has become an integral part of our life and internet addiction is a growing problem affecting many spheres of our lives. Considering the potential negative effects of internet addiction on health this study aims to study the prevalence and pattern of Internet addiction among medical students by using Internet Addiction Test in Nagpur.Methods: The cross‑sectional study was conducted in 488 medical students in year 2016. Data was collected by using semi structured proforma including socio-demographic variables and Young’s 20-item Internet Addiction Test (IAT) questionnaire. Correlation between Internet addiction, depression, anxiety and stress among undergraduate medical students in Azad Kashmir

Objective: To find out the correlation between internet addiction and depression, anxiety and stress among undergraduate medical students in Azad Kashmir. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 210 undergraduate medical students (first to the fifth year) was done in Poonch Medical College, Azad Kashmir. The data collection tools were DASS21 questionnaire and Young’s internet addiction questionnaire. Spearman rank correlation test was done to see the correlation between internet addiction and depression, anxiety, and stress. Data were analyzed by SPSS v23 at a 95% confidence interval. Results: A very high prevalence (52.4%) of moderate to extremely severe internet addiction was observed among the respondents.
