The Translation of Some Rhetorical Devices in Al-Fātiha Sūra into English
Adab AL Rafidayn, 2008
This paper is an attempt to shed light on some of the rhetorical devices and styles used in al-Fātiha: the opening sūra of the Glorious Qurān with a discussion of the problems involved in their translating from Arabic into English. The study aims at investigating the use of these devices and showing whether the translators were able to render them appropriately into English. In order to achieve the above aims, the study hypothesizes that: the effective style of rhetoric which is restricted to a number of stylistic devices such as metaphor, foregrounding and deferment and disjoining, etc. used in al-Fātiha, poses serious problems for translators who seek to translate them accurately, also there is no one-to-one correspondence between these devices in Arabic and English.
From among the important and old approaches of Quran scholars is thinking about the language and the ways of understanding and interpreting its extensive text that has different artistic, religious, and cognitive aspects. One of these approaches is the linguistic and literary approach to Quran about which many persons such as Seyyed Ghotb, Mostanser Mir, Nil Robinson, Izutsu, Anglika Noyort have compiled a set of plans and books. With advance in the analysis of different issues of linguistics and semiotics in different texts, it might be understood that the text of holy Quran and especially Quranic stories include many of linguistic techniques to convey and induce its sublime concepts. However, this aspect has less been dealt with. By analyzing the story of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) based on discourse semantics signs analysis, the present study tries to investigate and examine different discourse systems such as prescriptive, cognitive-interaction and tension and obtains interesting findings that highlight the elevation of structure and meanings of the story and confirms a body-like unity on the surface and a unique coherence in meaning. Given the point that in this study, the researchers are not to know about the values of Quranic stories for having these discourse systems, but just intend to manifest and highlight this dimension of discourse systems in structure and meaning of Quranic stories. To put it another way, the researchers try to describe these systems in surface and depth of the stories so that another valuable facet of Quranic stories might be proved. The research method used in this study was content analysis and based on semantics sign theories proposed recently by persons such as Greimas.
A linguistic Analysis for Coherence in the Quranic Text
مجلة وادی النیل للدراسات والبحوث الإنسانیة والاجتماعیة والتربویه, 2021
Appropriateness must be preserved in any acceptable text to achieve logical connectivity and textuality. Based on the notion of 'logical coherence' advocated by Levy (2003) and our criteria of continuity of thought and lexical cohesion, one can analyse Quranic text in terms of appropriateness, continuity of thought, and lexical cohesion. Appropriateness is a prototypical Quranic discourse property which is based upon linear thematic connection both intrasententially (within a sentence) and intersententially (between sentences). Quranic discourse displays a number of techniques through which the text accomplishes appropriateness. Some of such techniques are specific to Quranic Arabic. A number of sceptic researchers claim that the ayahs of the Quranic text are randomly assembled and bear no logical connection to the surrounding ones (e.g. Ohlander, 2005; Paret, 2010). A Semantic Analysis on the English Translation of Surah Luqman
2019
Quran in Islam has role as the highest source which is used in formulating laws, and other regulations concerning the relation between the creature and his creator and creature with other creature. One of surah in Quran is surah Luqman, which consists of many advices of a man whose name is Luqman. It is so special because there are educational aspects which can be learned from this surah. Luqman in delivering his advices is not by the way of saying in a harsh manner, but by the way of full of affection, which is shown in his hearty calling to his son by the word bunayya (my son). In educating be desirable that must be based on or surrounded by the affection feeling to the students. This research tends to be descriptive qualitative research since it does not deal with number at all, which describes about semantics aspects and the message involvement used in the English translation of surah Luqman done by Taqqi-ud-Din and Muhsin Khan. The result shows that there are three categories o...
Analysis of Surah “al-Kāfirūn”: Linguistic, structural and rhetoric features
At first sight, one could assume that Al-Kafirun seems relatively easy Surah due to its length and composition, especially comparing with other parts of the Qur’an, but it might be a quite superficial assessment. In fact, despite its length of six verses (ayat), Q 109 could shed some light not only on inter-textual consonance of the whole text of the Qur’an, but also on actual environment and context of its formation. Unfortunately, Q 109 has never been a proper focus of academic scholars, rather it has been merely mentioned in congruence and relation with other Surahs, or, at best, just some parts of it has been studied. So, this essay will elaborate and analyze Q 109 through the word-by-word observation of its linguistic, structural and rhetoric features.

Objectives: This study seeks to provide evidence for new aspects of the Qur’ānic eternal challenge, so as to offer humanity new insights unto the contemplation (tadabbur) of the structure and the meaning of the Qur’ān through introducing the concept of structural coherence (taswīr) of the Qur’ān; which is a pioneering and promising research area within the broader field of Qur’ānic studies. Methodology: The study employs the descriptive inductive approach which traces the relationships between the verses within the sūrahs, in addition to making use of the analytical and deductive approach in exploring new semantic areas that constitute the thematic dimensions of the entire Qur’ānic sūrah and its sub-sections. Findings: The study reached the following main results: 1. The domain of structural and thematic coherence (taswīr) of the Qur’ānic sūrahs constitutes an innovative arena that amplifies the overall interpretation of the sūrah. The concept (taswīr) itself is derived from the Arabic label given to the Qur’ān chapters . It stresses the coherence between the Qur’ānic sentences and verses as it is not only based on rhetorical or stylistic relationships but there is also some kind of geometrical structure that shows an amazing coherence among the verses, the sūrahs, the parts, and the sub-parts. As the Qur’ān is a book for life, such structural and thematic coherence should be reflected in the structuring of the different aspects of human life. 2. The Core theme of Sūrat Al-Nisā’ is: “Dispersing the human life, the divine regulation of human rights, and protecting the weak, especially women and children, from any type of oppression.” This is a holistic perspective that the Muslim Ummah can present as a civilized contribution to the United Nations as well as the entire humanity in regulating human rights. Originality: This study introduces and lays the foundations for the innovative concept of Qur’ānic taswīr, applies it to Sūrat Al-Nisā’, and reveals some uncovered treasures of the Qur’ānic meanings. By doing so, the study furthermore provides implications for guiding humanity and rescuing it from sufferings through employing this aspect of the Qur’ān in reinforcing international communication. Keywords: Qur’ānic Structural and Thematic Coherence (Taswīr); Thematic dimensions of Sūrat Al-Nisā’; Qur’ānic inimitability Link: https://journals.qu.edu.qa/index.php/sharia/article/view/2180

Four Ayahs of Surat Quraish were purposefully selected to address the research questions and categorized into semantic, and syntactic problems. The study shows that there are some syntactic, and semantic underlying problems in the translation of the meaning of Surat Quraish into English rendered by Abdel-Haleem, Khan and Mohammed Taj Al-Din Al-Hilai and Pickthall. Moreover, the types of the syntactic, and semantic underlying problems are lack of cohesion and coherence as well as the translation strategies employed by the three translators. The...
