The Characteristics of Language Politeness in Students’ WhatsApp Messages to Lecturers

This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of language politeness in students' WhatsApp (WA) messages to their lecturers. The research method used was a descriptive method with data consisting of 460 WA messages from 75 students. From this study, it is revealed that 88.7% of the characteristic of students' WA message structure begin with greetings, an apology for sending WA message, self-introduction, message, and thanks with greetings. 82.6% of WA messages are characterized by conversational language style in which they are a fully structured idea which represented using subject and predicate with several omissions in a certain part. The contents of the WA messages consist of 20% of the final project topics such as clarifying supervising schedule, discussing the content of final project, informing the schedule of final project presentation; 66.6% of WA messages contain lecture topics such as informing rescheduled lectures, asking about assignments, asking about score, permission for being absent; and 13.4% of WA messages contain other topics such as felicitations and condolences. Thus, the WA messages sent by the students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung to their lecturers show the characteristics of language politeness.

Teenagers Language Politeness Strategy on Social Media WhatsApp Based on Level of Education

Language politeness in social media is still often ignored. The article aims to describe teenagers' politeness strategies in social media conversations, especially in the WhatsApp group of junior high schools, senior high schools, and colleges. The research was quantitative and qualitative descriptive, and the population was complete sentences in WhatsApp group conversations. The period of recording the conversation with each group is during September 2021. The data collection technique is by exporting the conversation data to Ms. Words. The data were arranged based on the entry date, then coded using Brown & Levinson's politeness theory. The interpretation of the data classification results used the approach of Makassar's cultural perspective. The findings showed that in social media WhatsApp, the teenagers talked more frequently used three kinds of politeness strategies. 1) Bald on record involving questions, commands, and requests. Teenagers use this strategy from three-level of education. 2) Positive strategies involve jokes, identity, and paying attention. The college and high schools teenagers use jokes and identity. However, paying attention's strategy is just used by college teenagers. 3) Negative strategies include apologies, be-thankful, and questions. College and high schools teenagers use the apology and thank strategies. Nevertheless, teenagers from the high school level only used negative politeness in asking questions. In conclusion, the level of education of teenagers determines the use of politeness strategy in social media. The implication is that teachers and stakeholders pay more attention to students' language politeness building, especially in speaking politely to others, so their interaction is harmonious with their communities.

Students' Politeness Strategies to Lecturers in Sending Messages through WhatsApp

One of the issues that students face today is a lack of politeness in their language. Students' politeness is reflected in their attitudes when sending messages to lecturers. The objective of this study was to determine how polite students are when communicating with their lecturers through WhatsApp. This study was conducted at a private university in Sukoharjo. The data was obtained from student texts in the lecturer's WhatsApp app. The data was analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) FTA theory on politeness strategies. According to the findings of the study, some students were found sending messages without greeting the lecturers and instead conveying their intentions directly. FTAs are common, and students frequently threaten the lecturers' faces. The words used in a student's message can have an effect on the teacher's feelings and make the conversation appear informal. The Analysis of Politeness Strategies on Efl Students’ Chatting Group Interactions

This paper reported the analysis of the practice of politeness strategies used in WhatsApp group chatting interactions among EFL students. Intermediate level of English Education Program in one of private universities in West Java was employed because they are assumed to interact in WhatsApp group chatting. Furthermore, two research questions were formulated such as follows: 1) what kinds of politeness strategies do EFL students apply in WhatsApp chatting group interactions? and 2) what is the most dominant politeness strategy realized in EFL students’ chatting group interactions? This research is under the discipline of Discourse Analysis. It focused to investigate the politeness used by students in social media, especially WhatsApp application. This research was consist of 20 students in one class at the Graduate Program of State University of Makassar. To collect the data, the researchers transcribed students’ chat and discussion from the students’ WhatsApp group discussion. This researcher was analyzed by using discourse analysis approach based on the politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research showed that students only use positive politeness in questioning to show closeness and respect to the other students in the WhatsApp group discussion.

Students' Politeness to Lecturers in WhatsApp Application Measured Using Leech Maxim

This study aims to describe student politeness in communicating or sending messages to lecturers through the Whatsapp application. This research needs to be carried out to obtain an overview of the application of politeness principles used by students in communicating. This research is descriptive qualitative research with instrumental case studies, the instrument used is Maxim Leech. The source of this research data is student texts sent to lecturers. The research data are sentences, phrases, or words that contain aspects of politeness by Leech's politeness principles. Data retrieval uses the note-taking method, while data analysis uses the high method. The basic analysis technique is a technique for direct elements that sorts text into several categories of data forms, namely sentences, clauses, phrases, and words. The results of this study indicate that all politeness maxims are not used by students in sending student Whatsapp messages to lecturers.. From the six Maxim Leech Principles, five of them are used by students in communication. The five maxims are tact maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, generosity maxim, and agreement maxim. Of the five maxims used, the modesty maxim is most widely used compared to the other maxims. This shows that the politeness of students in a humble attitude exceeds other politeness
